It's August bro

It rained for like 30 minutes last night. That's like more rain than we've had in the last 6 months. But now my back yard is a muddy mess. Woe.

Did anyone else not named Beth watch the swimming world championships yesterday? I dunno why, but whenever swimming is on tv it always sucks me. The US won a shit ton of gold medals, too. So, good on them. Speaking of swimming, me & cmk were at dinner on Saturday night and were talking about if bgas. was a top notch ath-a-lete when she grows up (ahik*), what sport would we want it to be. The top 3 were swimming, volleyball, and tennis. The bottom 3 sports were WNBA, gymnastics, and LPGA.

Final Destination V? Really, Hollywood? Really?

Cmk is watching Three Sheets right now. I haven't seen this show in a minute. But our boy Zane is at Oktoberfest in Germany. That is on my bucket list. Being at Oktoberfest in Deutschland has to be the better, no?

The MLB trade deadline was alright, as far as the action. Bluebaldo went to the Tribe. I don't think that will put them over the top, though. Fuck Philly. They'll win the east but they ain't gonna win it all. The Yankees didn't get any big names. Hopefully the Bedard trade is a Larry Andersen 2.0 trade for Boston. I'm pissed Cincy didn't do ANYTHING at the deadline. They have a good farm system, go get another starter or a leadoff guy. Fucking Drew Stubbs is a #6 hitter, not a leadoff guy. I LOVE the moves that Texas made. They now have the arms to make another WS run. I am a little surprised they gave up on Chris Davis, though.

Philly is now thisclose to surpassing Boston on my I fucking hate that city more than life list. I hope Vick tears his ACL in the preseason, I hope Halladay needs elbow surgery soon, and I hope Hunter Pence gets beamed in the ear hole. I'm going on record now and saying that if the WS is Boston vs Philly, 1) I won't watch, and 2) I'll root for Boston. I just threw up in my mouth.

So are we out of debt yet?

El Padrino said...

kod said...

Two brutal stretches for the Twins, 1980-1986 and 1993-2000

Don't remember much about the earlier run of futility....but most of the 90s were very painful

*funny that the only two WS championships came right in the middle there (especially considering the 1986, 1989, 1990 and 1993 teams all finished sub .500).
*Not even the wild card era has produced a flukier MLB champion than the 87 Twins

kod said...

91 team was a bit fluky too; our starting pitching at least. Tapani and Erickson never regained the magic they had that year

They were great; and they needed to be great. Our next 3 starters were Allan Anderson, David West, and Mark Guthrie

other than Aggie, the bullpen was weak as well.

Great bats, but man did that team need (and get) a lot of luck (and defense)

kod said...

also, funny how Blylevn led us in 87 and Morris in 91...2 greats at the very end of their career, squeezing out that last little bit of greatness

hmmm....maybe the Twins should try and sign Clemens

kod said...

why mad? This is ns, did they not get a good return?

I thought it sounded like a pretty good deal for the Rockies, but I don't follow them closely. I thought Ubaldo was downsliding?

Blue said...

it's the same rule as fantasy.

typically when you trade one guy for 4 guys, the side getting the one always wins.

Blue said...

they basically got two guys who maybe could be good someday, although one of them scouts keep saying could be a great closer.

ubaldo can be special. I don't think he was downsliding, he had a rough first month because he hadn't built up enough arm strength. Since then he's been stellar, era under 3.

Blue said...

i think the thing that bites me the most about it is that they didn't "have to" make the trade.

Carmelo Anthony - was going to leave anyway

Matt Holliday - was going to leave anyway

Jay Cutler - was a bitch

Brandon Marshall - was going to leave anyway

Blue said...

they had ubaldo locked up at a great number for the next 3 years (now only 2 for cleveland because the trade voids the last year of his contract).

even if he did start to suck, it would have been a better number than any #3 starter in MLB, and he wouldn't have slid that far.

kod said...

"typically when you trade one guy for 4 guys, the side getting the one always wins."

Vikings fans see that a little differently, thanks Hershel

Blue said...

there's secret whisperings going around here that the rockies knew something was wrong with him health wise.

the yankees asked to do an ultra in-depth physical before agreeing to a trade and the rockies told them "no"

kod said...

ah, I see your frustration; thanks for the info

Since he ended up in the AL Central, I'm sure hoping the Rockies end up with the better end of that trade

kod said...

there's secret whisperings going around here that the rockies knew something was wrong with him health wise.

that's what I was suspecting; I figured that's why he ended up on a smaller market team (that HAS to take chances like this)

Blue said...

it was more about the suckitude of their farm system than anything to do with Ubaldo.

they had all these great "prospects" that never panned out, so now they're kind of screwed

Blue said...

the truth is, in the humidity in cleveland, he's gonna have some nasty stuff.

kod said...

I dunno though Blue, they've got a solid young team right now

their prospects can't be shaking out all that horribly, since they are within a game or two of first (in a weak division of course, but still....a big leap this year for them)

now, if it were the Royals on the other hand....

Blue said...

it was just shitty how it went down.

He's a great guy and didn't want to leave

Blue said...

plus then they threw him out there to start the game on saturday, and as soon as the game started they had another guy warming up in the bullpen.

So he was really distracted. He had seen the news that he had been traded about 30 minutes before the game started, so he was really confused when they told him to go out and start the game.

kod said...

of course, I really really want this to work out well for Colorado (and bite Cleveland in the ass) so a big part for me is wishful thinking...ideally that this plays out like Peavy did for the WSox

kod said...

He's a great guy and didn't want to leave

yeah, I hate losing those guys too...like Santana

Blue said...

oh well, enough whining about ubaldo

El Padrino said...

yeah the denver teams have had a rough time with trades lately

El Padrino said...

josh mcdaniels destroyed the broncos

El Padrino said...

"the truth is, in the humidity in cleveland, he's gonna have some nasty stuff."

his home ERA was high, his road ERA was not high

that is science

El Padrino said...

it was a horrible trade, rockies should be ashamed of themselves

El Padrino said...

but everyone makes horrible trades

El Padrino said...

remember

life sucks and sometimes you get raped

kod said...

well, better Cleveland than the Tigers or WSox I suppose

at least for now

Blue said...

I think given the circumstances, it's about as well as they could do if they were going to make a trade.

I guess they're projecting 2 of the guys they got to be starters out of spring training next year, so we'll see

maybe ubaldo's arm will fall off

the upside of rooting for a smaller market team is that while they don't win as many championships, when they do win, it maintains it's meaningfulness for much longer. (at least for me it does)

growing up in the cm of Minni, I've found that while it's awesome to dominate year in and year out and consistently win championships, it's more exciting to win as the underdog.

the wins are equally sweet; but one is more of a feeling of smug/relief, while the other is more of a wow, we just overcame some SERIOUS odds and shocked the state/country/world (where you look back decades later and still wonder how they hell they pulled it off)

Whiskey Tango said...

"would you take it going forward is the question"

talk about maintaining meaningfullness, the 86 mets are loved for life and they arent a small market team

either way for a true baseball fan the worlds series wins never are forgotten, fair weather fans, which is many yankee fans and they talk the most shit, they lose perspective and get cuaght up in payroll and buying free agents and expecting them to get the top guy year in year out even though it almost never results in a ring

kod said...

"talk about maintaining meaningfullness, the 86 mets are loved for life and they arent a small market team"

that was a way different pay structure; the 86 Mets weren't dramatically outspending other teams. And I didn't mean small market like less fan base, just lesser payroll or other inherent disadvantage (i.e. USA soccer and hockey)

But this is just me; I like to root for the underdog in general.

Whiskey Tango said...

LP's argument about not wanting the Braves "success" is basically contradicting his argument that payroll doesn't matter. He'd rather roll the dice with the Mess, because almost every year they spend a lot on players (except during this Madoff debacle), which heightens his hopes of them winning. So he says that payroll doesn't matter that much, but their spending gives him higher hopes
