unmotivated. deal with it.

Hockey playoffs started. 3 upsets last night. San Jose really sucks around playoff time. This is why I was not upset when the Bruins got rid of Joe Thornton. He's a huge underachiever once the calendar turns to April.

NBA regular season is over. David Stern is going to discuss teams resting starters in tthe final games of the season. This announcement was a transparent P.R. move since it is something that they can't really control. If they put a rule in place to prevent it, them players will start coming up with phantom injuries.

The Houston Astros are 0-8. Shaky start for Brad Mills. The astros record losing streak is 9. The MLB record is 21 straight. They may eclipse both. Step back off that bridge, Jug. You still have the White Sox.

In LOV news, I am officially vacating my spot on Thursdays. Who wants it?

Done.

"Then Matthew Vaughn stepped in. He's the director of the film (and also Layer Cake and Stardust). He swooped in, bought the option with his own money with the intention of making Kick-Ass his next movie. The only problem was that no studio would touch the film. You see, one of the heroes that sprouts into the limelight after Kick-Ass reaches the height of popularity is Hit-Girl. She's 11, swears like a sailor, and kills more people more gruesomely than The Bride in Kill Bill. (She was trained by her father, Big Daddy, an ex-cop with a brutal sense of justice played in the film by Nicolas Cage.)

Since no studio would finance it, Vaughn put his money where his mouth was and financed the whole thing entirely between him and some friends. And so the movie was made with the same carefree, no compromises attitude as the comic."

I'm starting to get annoyed with sports writers who act like college players are so screwed over by the NCAA by not getting stipends in return for the money they make the programs and NCAA.

-Let's not pretend that college is affordable anymore, and at least note that if a player does want a degree, they have avoided probably 50K or more in student loans (tuition, books, room and board, meals, etc. all paid for).
-there's an argument to be made that they deserve more, but let's not turn them into martyrs or indentured servants.

I think you're wrong about this.

kod said...

I think you're wrong about this.

-says the guy who didn't go to college and doesn't have to pay over 1/3 of his take home pay towards student loans

still, maybe you are right; I'm not saying that some college athletes don't deserve more....just that a number of writers are purposefully dishonest to try and make their point.

truth is, the VAST majority of players who actually are screwed over by the system go on to make at least a couple million dollars in the professional leagues. Some of them take money or other benefits under the table (or indirectly, like getting their dad hired in the weight room). I don't pity them.
-for those good enough to play full time in college, but not good enough to get into the professional leagues, they got a pretty substantial benefit for what they put in (maybe not as much as they deserve....but that's not my point here).
-for those who don't go pro, but don't graduate...that's their own fucking fault.

kod said...

IMO I think the problem is that a lot of the sports writers and talking heads who make these disingenuous arguments are over 40, and don't fully appreciate what a mess our student loan system is in.

They can't even get a fuckin' part-time job to make a little spending money, man.

-but to treat someone getting the opportunity for a fully funded college scholarship like a sacrificial lamb is stupid.

Meiz said...

They can't take ANYTHING. What if a kid's having a rough go of things and they're far away from home? Who do they have to go to for some advice or to just talk about stuff?

COACH. That's who. And guess what. If coach wants to take you out for a pizza and some pops...CAN'T FUCKING DO IT. Against the rules. Coach is preached up to be this father figure for these kids and for the most part, coach fills that role....until it's time to do some actual fatherly type shit. Why? i have 5 figures of student debt, not sure if that is enough to opinionate (s)

anyway, i think that the money making sports (whatever they are at that school) should have some sort of profit sharing with their players.

joe swimmer gets paid enough with his free ride (probably too much, but i am ok with that).

joe football player at ohio state brings in far more revenue than the school expends on him. i'd like to see that gap narrowed (not closed just narrowed).

tem said...

for the most part though i truly believe that almost all football players at D-1 schools (probably not walk ons, but maybe) get a decent amount of under the table action.

so maybe, the corrupt system is working ok enough.

Imagine how much money Universities and the NCAA would stand to lose if players were encouraged to go play elsewhere.

you can't plan on going to collitch* - full ride or not have any loot.

you gotta plan and save or work for something.

and athletes can get yobs*.

I had friends in school who did summer camps in their sports (camp counselors) and they made bank.

tem said...

and to clarify a lot of times that under the table benefit isn't direct.

it is joe booster hiring joe football players uncle to do nothing.

kod said...

but I don't need Kod going all Title IX and bleeding heart liberal on me.

-FWIW, that was not my intention; my frustration with all of this is not even really about college sports specifically.

-what's behind all of this (for me) is that we are saddling college graduates with an enormous amount of debt they will likely spend 30+ years paying off. If they go to graduate school, double the outstanding loan obligation.
-now, a college degree is almost the equivalent of what a high school degree used to be 40, 50 years ago when few went to college.
-it's very hard to find a decent paying job without a college degree, so the majority of Americans pursue higher education. Jobs that many graduates get after college or trade school (especially those majoring in liberal arts) do not pay nearly enough to keep up with the price that job took to get via tuition, books, room and board, etc...at least not for several years.
**When some people act like these college athletes get nothing in return for their efforts, it almost seems like a slap in the fact to all the hard working 20 and 30 somethings who have sacrificed a lot and taken on a lot of risk to try and live the American dream.

you're talking about a very small percentage of college athletes...very small. the university is still in the business of educating people, not making professional athletes. A very small percentage of college players make the pros.

There shouldn't be special rules for those few players. those are the ones that should go overseas if they want the money. Exposure is money too if they're in college and playing on TV every week. Those kids are getting theirs

my point would be the star college players get thier money when they go pro and a free ride to a very expensive college in the process

Jugdish said...

you can't plan on going to collitch* - full ride or not have any loot.

you gotta plan and save or work for something.

Do you think John Wall's mama has money to be giving him?

"if they have no time to work, then they shouldn't have too much time to go out"

This is out of left field. No comprendo.

I've heard a lot of sports writers bitching about it.

I don't think I’ve ever heard of a former college athlete bitching about not getting paid.

john wall is one and done...he can eat in the college chow hall for a year until he gets drafted...poor example

"**When some people act like these college athletes get nothing in return for their efforts, it almost seems like a slap in the fact to all the hard working 20 and 30 somethings who have sacrificed a lot and taken on a lot of risk to try and live the American dream."

good point kod

-says the guy who didn't go to college and doesn't have to pay over 1/3 of his take home pay towards student loans

didn't you use an aggressive repayment schedule though?

you should extended that bitch out while you got your career going then refinance to a shorter term.

how much spending money does a college athlete need that you feel the university needs to provide?

I'm saying if they don't have time to go out and get a part time job to get the extra money, then they don't have much extra time to go out on the town to use the spending money

Meiz said...

"not making professional athletes."

This isn't about making pro athletes.

so if you don't want to pay them, put the money in a trust fund where you have to graduate to get the loot (create an incentive).

-try living off unemployment for a while though. It wouldn't even cover all of my bills, let alone leave me anything left over for discretionary spending (entertainment) or emergencies (major home or car repair).
-If I got laid off I would be very grateful for it....but I would be looking for another job immediately

getting benefits for close to 3 years is unacceptable kodpiece.

and yes I have lived off unemployment. CA unemployment was niiiiiiice.

"try living off unemployment for a while though"

a lot of people do just fine. my buddy has been out of work for 7 months. he pulls in just over 400.00/week. he's turned down jobs looking for that "perfect" one. ie he's having a good time, drinking and chasing tail.

IT'S TRUE said...

oh no you didnt

Jugdish said...

if you pay them, then it is. they aren't working for a company, they are playing for a school. its their choice.

Who said they didn't have the time? They're not allowed to get a job.

isiah thompson said...

you're talking about a very small percentage of college athletes...very small. the university is still in the business of educating people, not making professional athletes. A very small percentage of college players make the pros.

how many D-I football teams go to bowls - half or over half?

they aren't creating bowl games to lose money or make kids feel good.

they create them to make loot.

half of one sport isn't "a very small percentage"

didn't you use an aggressive repayment schedule though?

yes, good point (ns); I also got lucky with loans...most of my classmates are far worse off than me

amazingly enough i think we all agree that the rules for athletes are too strict....coach can't buy them pizza? come on.

Steve said...

"-I like this idea a lot (ns)"

i did too, but i have already agreed with Zeke once today and i didn't want to overdue it.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong about this one deke.

like I said, I knew dood's that had yobs* in the summer.

which goes to the school...im not going to argue how its spent. i just don't think you spread that among the players. this is college, not the pros.

i can neither confirm or deny...but id be willing to bet they can work during the summer or off season

that QB for Okla. got caught with his "yob"* at the car dealership.
