REGG-AAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!

"I don't know whether to smile or kick a field goal!"

****

My current FAVORITE HEAD COACH is Reginald K. Theus who is now hookin' it up with the Kings. nicely played. NICELY played. I mean sheeet, who else can go from pretend hike skool to mediocre college to mid-to-low-tier nba franchise and STILL have time to keep his 'curl gleaming with a shiny layer of Afro-Sheen?

Got-taaaamn Reggie Theus, that's who! (And he's iconic like Shaft, too.) And this time, we've found a "Reggie" without a loud mouth sister who tries to steal his camera time. (Bitch, pleeze.)

Anybody else look like Alex Rodriguez and Michael Jackson had a love child?

Nah. Nuh-yuh. Didnt think so. The man is a legend.. in the Billy D Williams sense of the word. Lionel Richie loves you baby. Gerald Levert also called, said you're still on for lunch.

Seriously though Reg, and I swear I'm not clowing you, but I LOVED Hang Time. You think you'd be available for another season sometime soon? Maybe by all-star break or end of the year? Nah, i'm kidding, Reg. Of course theyll keep you at least 3 years, even if you totally suck. They've got to show loyalty to the ex-guys no matter how much of a bit-player you were.

It's all good though. Keep the Barry Melrose-if-he-were-black haircut rockin'. We love your heart and souuuuuuul (train). Oh, and we roll tape on "Thriller" in 5 minutes.. make sure to hit makeup and then get on set..

That's all you get today. Me ragging on Reggie Theus.
Entertain yourselves..

---And diseased weasel, feel free to release your weekly rankings on Thursdays instead from now on. We can clip this thing before it gets started. You can have "Toolbox Thursdays" all to yourself. Or something. Just leave Wednesdays alone. What did it ever do to you?

Who is with me on this?

Pitchers pitched for 70+ years on a 4 man rotation, and their arms held up (probably better).

So why can't we go back to this (if your team sucks to begin with...)

Sure, the Red Sox wouldn't do this cuz they have 5-6 SP's. Same with some other teams. But the Cardinals or Royals could definitely use this.

I hate being put on hold

How so? Bob Feller throw 100 mph. Gibson and Koufax all threw more innings in a typical season that starters today, and in 4 man rotations too.

Heck...as late as 1991-1993, Maddux was throwing over 260 innings in each of those years.

the mound was higher

Want a power pitcher?

Clemens threw 281 IP in 1987. 272 in 1991, and 261 as late as 1997.

blue said...

nuclear weapons hadn't been used

ToddPacker said...

"Pitchers pitched for 70+ years on a 4 man rotation, and their arms held up (probably better)"

i don't really believe that... 5 man rotation is an evolution of the game that makes sense... too much cash is tied up in #1 and #2 starters to have them have “tired arms” down the stretch... you know why every team does it... because it’s smart.... i do see your point about awful teams like the cardinals and royals doing for wtf sake

Mills said...

"the mound was higher"

this I would actually buy as an agrument.

HOWEVER, if you read the article, nobody even tried a 5 man rotation until 72. And not everyone took to it overnight.

Mound was lowered in 69 i believe.

tem said...

Well they weren't all on roids back then. That's different.

ToddPacker said...

"Want a power pitcher?

he was on 'roids.... so that don't count

also back then people weren't pussies.

in comparison. Bob Gibson, in a 4 man rotation threw anywhere from 233-300 IP a year.

Not that many more innings.

yeah i do.... but pinella is crazy... he never did do it

Mills said...

Let's do Math.

162 games / 4 pitchers = 40 games a year per SP. Double headers would require an extra starter.

162 gaames / 5 pitchers = 32 starts a year per SP.

Assuming 6 IP for each additional start. That is like 48 IP per year more.

That's nothing.

blue said...

there would be less baseball cards..and who wants that

The guys were playing for peanuts...who gave a shit if they were injured? DL stints weren't commonplace back then...hangnail gets a pitchers start pushed back now mills...it's not going to happen. I think there would be a greater case for a 6 man rotation...or having two marginal #5 guys share the game rather than bringing in the typical 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th inning guys...have the two starters throw 4 innings each and then close it out

ToddPacker said...

"Of course he is Bill Brasky's nephew...by marriage...but still."

Things become more advanced and more specialized. Batters (and pitchers) have more knowledge of who they are facing and what they can and cant do, so you have to throw more pitches, and better pitches more consistently.

This is kind of dumbing it down, but back then it was more of Gibson throwing 90 fastballs per game and mixing in a few curves.

3 things.

1. YOu are an idiot.

2. I already posted the article before the discussion.

3. Pitchers fair worse because they are not conditioned to pitch on 3 days rest.

Iamunstoppable said...

blue, please refrain from ever questioning logic that includes tom emansky in the answer..

Mills said...

i understand the specialization that occurs today, and you need more pitchers to throw at teams.

HOWEVER, if you take that 5th arm and hide them in the bullpen, they will likely be more effective in short bursts. Like a gagne or something (starter to reliever conversions are generally successful).

your starters wouldn't have to go 7-8 IP cuz you have a bigger bully.

Corbin said...

It doesn't just focus on defense...but say it did.

Actually pretty far off. I went to law school to avoid going to the real world. I could care less about arguing law. I want to argue about real important things like 4 man vs. 5 man rotations.

This is sad, yes, but true.

I just like to discuss various topics. My main issue is that I think pitchers nowadays are pansies. And the reason the break down so much is because they never work their arms to their full potential.
