My Life is an Island Green

Spiderman 3.....C. Maybe I was expecting too much?

DVD of the week : Cocaine Cowboys. Very solid doc about coke in Miami in the 1980's.

Golden State - enjoy the fishing.

Phx - up next for a charter boat?

And we had a Bud Selig sighting yesterday. He ate brunch a table over from me with his fam. I was surprised that he looks as mousy in person as he does on tv but he was taller than I imagined. Oh and he used the same plate more than once at the buffet, thought that was kinda funny.

That's all you get Mr. Fuckyouman.

ToddPacker said...

good point, tem

Beth said...

Congrats to the Mets on taking 2 out of 3 against the Brewers. That helped solidify your lead in the wild card race.

tem said...

This weekend at the Arena Football game I realized that my season tickets are right next to Mike Vrabel and his family.

If anyone wondered they seem really nice.

Also, I'm not sure why I didn't recognize this sooner. I've sat right next to him or his wife or one of his kids for 5 previous games.

This is the extent of my dealings with celebs. Circle of LOV. We had this conversation months ago but at that time I had nothing.

tem said...

hahaha Phones is bringing the heat today.

Beth said...

And I've said it before, I also think it's only a matter of time til the Mets pass the Braves (I mean we're talking $115 mill vs. $87 mill for team payrolls), so I'm milking it for all it's worth til that happens.

Beth said...

Yeah Tem, you can do better than "Phones", don't disappoint me.

El Padrino said...

oh stop with the payroll crap

and i dont drink coffee so i wouldnt know that :- )

ToddPacker said...

El Padrino said...

ToddPacker said...

re: chipotle coupons.

they send them out sporadically. we have gotten two in the last year.

we likes em.

when you throw in halloween (dress like burrito, get a free burrito), tax day (fill out the chipotle 1040 form for a free burrito), and all their 2 for 1 days, they really give out a lot of free stuff.

NIIIICE.

blue said...

i'd like to see Natalie Gulbis (female golfer) in a lesbian sex tape.

Also seems like if you buy a giftcard during certain times of the year (christmas, easter, thursdays) they throw in a free burrito too.

ok, time to eat.

there are no 2 for 1 days here.

From deadspin: New Guidelines?

As commenters, one of our most powerful tools is the Pop Culture Reference. It has the power to either arouse our sense of humor or assault our sense of good taste. Rarely does a thread pass without a quote from some cinematic touchstone of comedic genius or a mention of something that Dwight did on The Office last week. This is a good thing; sports are pop culture and pop culture is sports (also, basketball IS jazz). So what's the best approach to dropping a hot PCR?

Try something highbrow but don't get too obscure. When Suss-- references Citizen Kane, we all laugh because he's not reaching:

Suss--: "NO SPOILERS PLEASE."
Rosebud was the name of his sled.

Yet when Rob Iracane directly quotes The Third Man seemingly out of nowhere, readers everywhere scratch their heads. Context, Rob, context. This isn't existentialism.

Still, if no one recognizes your PCR, don't get upset. There are thousands of folks scanning these posts and hopefully you made a few of them chuckle. There's no reason for our friend The Man with No Name to complain on the televised golf wagering post:

The Man with No Name:Come on people! A caddyshack reference! That's gold!

Caddyshack references are gold, The Man with No Name. But use them sparingly and wisely on posts about actual golf, or else we'll get a Movie Quote Avalanche.

Which brings up my final point: no more fucking Anchorman quotes. The next person to say the words 'whale's vagina' gets the boot.

So, how can you become a better referencer of pop culture? Let me help you with some of my favorite sources of entertainment. Music is a very personal choice; I can't make you listen to Elvis Costello if you're a Pussycat Dolls fan. Television is very time-consuming; I can't ask you to go back and watch six seasons of "The Sopranos" (but if you haven't been watching all along, what's wrong with you?). However, movies require very little investment of time and are frequently shown on
television for free! Here are seven 20th century films that are both culturally enriching and inimitably quotable:

Sleeper
Dr. Strangelove
Goodfellas
Duck Soup
Chinatown
Pulp Fiction
Caddyshack

Honestly, anything and everything in the Woody Allen oeuvre is rewarding. Even a garbage movie like Celebrity is enjoyable to see the trainwreck that is Kenneth Branagh playing the Woody role. What does this all have to do with sports? It's up to you to make the connection. Pop culture IS sports.

But as the Popemobile entered the stadium, the rain stopped, the clouds literally parted, and warm sunshine filled the arena. The soggy crowd claimed to have witnessed a minor miracle."
