ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED????

I haven't watched enough playoff hockey, and I'm pissed. I'm the kind of NHL "fan" who rarely watches during the regular season but will watch as much playoff hockey as I can.

The main reason for me missing these games is that "versus" isn't on the regular channel rotation. By the time I remember to check the games are either over or they aren't on.

I heard Gary Betman say "we're the #1 option on versus". WTF. They shoulda stayed on ESPN even if the NHL had to pay ESPN to broadcast their games. RIP the NHL (again).

Anyway I bring this up bc I watched the opening ceremonies for Jackie Robinson Day in LA on ESPN's Sunday Night baseball. Seeing the bumbling Bud Selig is always a treat. He finds a way to fuck up everything he touches.

So Gary Betman...bad commish, Bud Selig....bad commish. Paul Tagliabue and David Stern....good commish's. (It's too early to judge Goodell)

Before you try and defend Selig save your breath. MLB is a distant 3rd if not 4th in the American sports landscape behind the NFL, NBA and NASCAR.

The NFL and NASCAR have all enjoyed sky-rocketing success in the last 10 years, with huge increases in ratings, revenue, fan attendance, etc. The NBA has at least maintained to a degree or hasn't slipped that much since the "golden years" with MJ, Magic, Bird, etc. And if you think the NBA has slipped a lot, at least they have a hard salary cap which, if managed properly, can ensure you can rebuild in a decent amount of time.

The NHL on the other hand is on life support thanks to over expansion and other bad decisions by Betman and Co.

MLB has seen increased fan attendance and is in solid fiscal standing at least from an overall league perspective. Wait for it.....BUT, there is a clear divide between the have and the have nots. Also, even with increased fan attendance the sport has slipped in the US sports landscape, is it really "America's Past Time" anymore? And I haven't even brought up the PED problem in MLB.

Watching MLB celebrate Jackie Robinson and how he changed the course of MLB and maybe even US history, I found it ironic that MLB has less black players than ever and isn't really that great off. And I'm not sure why I even wrote about this, except for the fact that seeing Bud Selig reminded me how much of a d bag he is.

Coming from a Milwaukean- You all have no clue how big of a douche Alan H Selig is.

Imagine having this asshole as an owner of your favorite sports team. How does that sound? Cheap ass, money grubbing Juden. His daughter, too. Bitch.

Sorry white devil, the person who keys in the new numbers for your payroll got shot.

We do our annual reviews here like 6 months late. Then when you get your raise they retroactively apply it back 6 months and you get a "catch up" check. It feels like a bonus check, but its not.

That's how they trick us into thinking we get bonuses.

To Whoever linked that article about Columbus being the loser town:

That was awesome. I printed it up and put in on the fridge.

temwr said...

The fridge in the office. Not my house. The fridge in the house has an IU calendar and lots of Pizza place magnets.

And a picture of some kid I don't know.

Oh and since El Pad is on vacation, I don't think there is much to stop me from dominating the mornings this week.

Fear my Monday boredom!!

temwr said...

Also I have decided to brag while I can, because success is fleeting.

Check out the fantasy base bull league. Mills Luvs The Moosecock just dominated his opponent (The Weasel) and is now in first place.

Also, good post Zeke. Selig is a douche. Bettman is slightly less of a douche.

ToddPacker said...

sorry tem, i will be no help this monday morning as for as comments go... still getting beat up by the tps.... i hope this tps storm ends soon... i'm about 4 days behind in the Lov comments

temwr said...

I am sure you can beat those pesky TPS.

You need to start blitzing safeties and running plays from the Waterboy. Put Bouche in on offense!

temwr said...

Also I have decided that I am against sudden death overtime in playoff games. Especially hockey. I am on the fence for football.

I don't care about it during the regular season because there are like 82 games, but in the playoffs I want to see some 9 OT games, so let's cut this sudden death BS out and make em play the whole period out.

Columbus Losers Update:

Someone has already thrown the article away. I will post another one up in a bit.

If you don't know what I am talking about someone posted a Page 2 link yesterday that showed Columbus as being the all time loserest professional sports city.

ben said...

I found that article...thought it would be funny...good to see the people in your office have a great sense of humor.

ben said...

we are not allowed to post things on our office refrigerator...i think there might be a camera watching and you get fired if you do

ben said...

They put the camera up when people complained about a "lunch thief". My solution to the problem was, pay people more money so they can afford lunch.

ben said...

I agree with everyone on the Selig suckiness...how did this guy get to be commish anyway? You'd think they'd hire somebody with an education.

ben said...

heck, i think freak (fbbl commissioner) is a better commish then selig

temwr said...

We get a lot of very non PC stuff put on our fridge.

If the people who worked here worked for a bigger company they would be fired...a lot.

ben said...

My old company was that way...i always joked that it would suck to work for a company that had an HR department...that didn't make the chicks in HR very happy.

Why is the lack of blacks in baseball considered a problem, but a lack of white Americans in the NBA doesnt seem to matter much?

Joe Morgan was beating that shit into the ground last night. I almost threw my shoe at the television when Peter Gammons weighed in on the subject.

It's actually so bad that I often am the one who is taking down the racist/too politcal/etc jokes that get put up.

Sometimes I wish Peter Gammons' stroke had been just bad enough to get him off the air.

That makes me evil, I think, but I don't care.

ben said...

re: softball team names

I played on a team called "nads" for a couple season...the old guy that managed the team liked the name because the fans (all 3 of them) could cheer "GO-NADS".

He thought this was funny.

ben said...

today is emancipation day...which means nothing to anyone in the world other then, your taxes aren't due until tomorrow.

temwr said...

It is the day Lincoln freed the slaves in DC. About 9 months before he issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It was like his trial run for the Proclamation.

The mayor of DC decided that they needed another day off during the year so he added it as a holliday a couple years back.

ben said...

I actually read an interesting article about the lack of blacks in baseball, and the reasoning, according to the article, was Title IX in college. That has forced most schools to only offer about 11 full scholarships for baseball...they typically split them amongst the players...but since it's not a full ride, it makes much more fiscal sense for an impoverished person to try and get a basketball or football scholarship where they are more likely to get a full ride.

temwr said...

It also doesn't mean that your state and local taxes aren't due today.

You probably need to send those shit in today and you can send your federal in tomorrow.

Tim Duncan got thrown out of the game from the bench for laughing.

temwr said...

RE: Duncan.

This is Marc Stein's insider blog. I know it is long, but IDGAF.

DALLAS -- Tim Duncan grabs rebounds, but never headlines. Tim Duncan never lets us inside. Tim Duncan is boring.

Accurate scouting report, right?

Wrong. Duncan's dossier needs a major rewrite after Sunday.

An afternoon that was forecast to be more letdown than showdown wound up more competitive and combustible than the Mavericks or Spurs ever imagined, capped by Avery Johnson bringing Dirk Nowitzki back in off the bench instead of letting his MVP candidate rest for the final nine-plus minutes. That helped the hosts rally for a 91-86 triumph which, more than anything, seemed to suggest that Johnson simply couldn't bear to lose a home game to their hated rivals from the south, even when the game meant virtually nothing to Dallas.

However . . .

Don't expect to hear much more about the on-court proceedings after Duncan a) was apparently ejected for laughing and then (b) uncharacteristically unloaded on veteran ref Joey Crawford.

Unloaded, actually, doesn't begin to cover it, since the famously reserved Duncan (at least in his dealings with the media) not only accused Crawford of having "a personal vendetta" against him but also revealed that Crawford challenged him to a fight.

Interested yet?

Duncan arrived at the final regular-season weekend of his 10th NBA season with just one overturned ejection* in all that time and seven techs for the season. But twice in a span of 1:16 in Sunday's third quarter, Duncan was hit with Ts by Crawford.

While sitting on the bench.

The first was more surprising than shocking. Manu Ginobili was called for a foul and Duncan -- still simmering after an offensive foul that sent him to the bench moments earlier -- voiced a protest from his seat at referee LeRoy Richardson. Crawford swooped in to T him up. Unusual, yes, but not unprecedented.

The second? Call it a full-blown stunner.

Duncan was still seated and laughing animatedly on the bench after a foul had been whistled on Fabricio Oberto. Undoubtedly feeling he was being shown up, Crawford hit Duncan with T No. 2.

It was a scene reminiscent of the Western Conference finals in 2003 when Crawford ejected then-Mavs coach Don Nelson for standing silently (but defiantly) near the scorer's table in San Antonio after Nelson had been ordered to return to the bench.

The real show, though, would take place at Duncan's locker ... after the Spurs fizzled without him in the fourth.

An extended look at the quotes can be found here, but the summary is plenty good: Duncan explained in great detail how he feels Crawford "has a personal problem with me" and asserted that Crawford repeatedly asked him before the technicals, "Do you want to fight?"

Duncan also insisted that he barely spoke to Crawford during the game and that he thinks he can play through any carryover when the Spurs and Crawford inevitably cross paths in the playoffs.

"I got to watch what I do, I guess," Duncan said. "I guess I can't laugh anymore. I can't enjoy the game. I'll have to sit there and put my head between my legs."

My best guesses from courtside:

1. Even though the second technical was one too many -- and even though you suspect that pretty much all public opinion is going to accumulate on Duncan's side -- he's a lock to get fined for his comments.

In December, remember, Jason Kidd was docked $20,000 for lashing out after a bungled call in Detroit sealed a one-point loss for the Nets. Didn't matter that Kidd was right about Vince Carter drawing a foul on Rasheed Wallace. Didn't matter that the league office deemed it a missed call as well. Kidd referred to the refs that night as "three blind mice" and Duncan just said a lot more than that.

2. Crawford will be disciplined as well. The difference: Punishments for referees generally aren't made public, so we might not immediately know about any fines and/or suspensions. Yet there's no way this can be downplayed in the league office, since this was no mere missed call. Duncan does have a well-chronicled rep as one of the league's most frequent complainers to referees and had to have said more to Crawford over the course of the afternoon than he claims. But a referee suggesting a fight to settle things, even in jest, is no way for a referee to calm tensions, which is one of their jobs.

And with players on both sides telling me they heard the word "fight" tossed around on the floor, I have no reason to doubt the veracity of Duncan's account.

3. I'm guessing that this whole episode, sadly, will crank up the conspiracy-theory talk before we even get to the playoffs, which didn't seem possible. But how can something like this not turn fans off? Refs having it in for certain players or teams . . . Tim Duncan isn't exactly known for publicly registering that kind of complaint.

How can it not come up before, during and after the next Spurs game Crawford officiates? How will David Stern react to some pretty strong claims from one of his finest citizens? Pretty interesting stuff, with Duncan at the center of it all.

*About that overturned ejection? Some good trivia I had forgotten, courtesy of our pal Johnny Ludden from the San Antonio Express-News: Duncan's only other career ejection -- on Feb. 4, 2002, after an exchange with Kevin Garnett got both guys tossed -- was rescinded by the league a day later.

ben said...

Duncan is a whiner...that's why he's not playing for team USA, he felt he never got any calls in the olympics so he took his ball and went home.

ben said...

I'd pay money...not much...to see the Duncan/Crawford fight. My guess is Duncan would take him out in round 2. Long arms and good footwork.

COMMENTARY
Imus ‘fight’ is over money, fame
JASON WHITLOCK - The Kansas City Star
When I criticized his and Jesse Jackson’s irresponsible and divisive methods of seeking social justice Friday morning, Al Sharpton dismissed the attack by questioning my credibility to lodge a complaint.

“There are always guys that are not in the ring who want to call the fight,” Sharpton said. “You know that going in the ring; you’re going to have critics … You can’t satisfy people who are not in the ring.”

It’s a clever response. It ignores the obvious.

Jesse and Al don’t want anyone else in the ring. They’ve turned the fight for racial equality into a money and fame pit, a place to wrestle for camera time, “consulting” jobs and handshake deals that would make NCAA investigators blush in astonishment.

If people with a modicum of integrity were allowed in the ring and, more importantly, allowed to choose the opponents and the length of the battle, the money would run dry and Jesse and Al would be forced to look for real work.

Fighting bums is easy. Just look at what Jesse and Al James did to Don Imus, a washed-up, recovering drug addict. They knocked out Imus in a couple of rounds.

But at what cost, and what was the real purpose?

The young women on the Rutgers basketball team are now targets, the recipients of death threats and harassment, according to East Coast media reports.

I have no problem with young people engaging in battle and suffering severe consequences for a righteous cause. We need more of that. The people who really provided the energy for the civil rights movement were in college.

But getting in harm’s way over the ignorant utterances of a shock jock? Getting in harm’s way so a coach could have her moment to tell the world about the troubles she’s known? Getting in harm’s way so Al and Jesse James can flex their muscle by beating up another tomato can?

No way. It was irresponsible, self-indulgent and typical of the kind of domestic terrorism Sharpton and Jackson have come to specialize in.

Again, I am not defending Don Imus. I shed no tears over his comeuppance.

I simply question the motives of the people who pushed the hardest and shouted the loudest for Imus’ demise. Those people are now covering themselves with the fig leaf that they have a genuine interest in stopping the anti-black, women-objectifying language in rap music.

According to Sharpton, he’s been working on this issue for a number of years.

He’s clever. Fortunately, we’re not stupid. We just watched Jesse and Al sink their teeth in Imus’ rear end and not remove them until MSNBC and CBS put knives in Imus.

That tenacity and enthusiasm have been completely missing from their fight to clean up hip hop. Whether we like him or not, Minister Louis Farrakhan is the only leader with a consistent position on that issue. What we get from Jesse and Al are half-hearted public relations ploys, fights that end well before any blood is drawn. It’s a game, a game Jesse and Al have mastered.

You can create the appearance of putting up a fight, and that ensures no one else will enter the ring.

As an example, talk with black race-car drivers about their feelings about NASCAR’s dealings with Jesse Jackson. I have. Their belief is, if you sponsor the right and enough Rainbow Coalition events, you can avoid Jesse ever bringing his circus and negative spotlight to your organization.

You follow me?

The ring Jesse and Al are boxing in is just as corrupt as the one where Mike Tyson sparred.

In a one-year time span, under the guise of fighting for our equality, Jesse and Al contributed to putting Duke lacrosse players and Rutgers basketball players in harm’s way.

For what? Was Don Imus hiding weapons of mass destruction? Were the lacrosse players an international threat to escorts? Or maybe the truth just doesn’t matter to Jesse and Al when it comes to furthering their agenda.

Whatever integrity Jesse and Al say our president lacks, you have to wonder if they don’t have the exact same deficiency.

If there’s a fight to push Jesse and Al out of the ring, you can sign me up. They’re an embarrassment. They disgrace the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., a great man whose efforts caused division so that we could one day come together.

Jesse and Al cause division for profit, and demand from others the very things they’re unwilling to do — judge people on the content of their character and follow the truth wherever it leads, regardless of color.

Truth is on the side of the righteous. Jesse and Al operate as though they don’t believe in our righteousness. They are far more dangerous than Don Imus.

does bud selig have a blog?

what if we did operation creampie to Curt Schilling's blog? I bet that would piss off SG, and that's what he deserves.

temwr said...

some other stuff i forgot about.

ben said...

whatever happend to DJ Jazzy Jeff? I know he had a role on FP of Bel Air, but couldn't dude hook up and put out some solo albums or something. Or find another rapper to sing to his mixes.

el diablo blanco said...

Further to tem's diary:

*We found out Beth was briefly a sex slave.

Isiah Thomas said...

FH - its actually a pretty good fantasy site that he mentioned off-hand. I started following his posts and would make moves just to snipe his guys.

I'm petty like that.

temwr said...

ah yes, beth was a sex slave.

i knew i would forget something good.

Schillings blog

Maybe you just need better pitching.

Its not that easy to upgrade pitching in this deep a league after the draft.

Isiah Thomas said...

the Rangers are up 2-0. You'd have to think if the Thrashers were up 2-0 Tables woulda been all about some comments today.

ben said...

Lunch Time!

I didnt say you were going to get better pitching, just that maybe you needed it.

Mills said...

Simmons on Dan Patrick this afternoon. FYI.

temwr said...

I hate Dan Patrick.

ben said...

tem-
do you think that all the dan patricks should be gathered up and forced to live on an island by themselves?

temwr said...

Wait, the fantasy blog died?

How did that happen?

ben said...

I think mills killed it...or el pad

Spaceman Spiff said...

it still exists, but its a corpse

el diablo blanco said...

"Aqua Teen Hunger Force film comes in at No. 12"

wtf? theres a movie out?

temwr said...

I think the Sports Center one should be shot in the balls.

All other Dan Patricks, I gots no beef with them.

temwr said...

Yeah they have been advertising that movie ridiculously on Adult Swim late at night during Futurama and Family Guy.

I have never seen a single episode of it because it seemed annoying.

el diablo blanco said...

it has its funny moments, worth checking out if nothings doin'.

and yes, 'Tabes' wouldve turned out in force. beth i know youre lurking.. and i know u wouldnt miss a chance to take a jab if u had it.

stick and move baby, stick and move.

Beth is working the rope a dope.

Tiring the Rangers out.

I saw Stranger Than Fiction and am deeply saddened to say I thought Maggie Gyllenhaal looked oddly attractive.

Isiah Thomas said...

did EP say what his name for her would be?

I vote for "cum oven" or some variation.

el diablo blanco said...

see zeke, i wasnt lying.. she can have her moments.

el diablo blanco said...

shirley has a 3pm chat. i think i came.

Isiah Thomas said...

FH - I thought of that as I was watching. I wondered how she could look good in the movie but everywhere else I've seen her she looked like she had a melting saint bernard's face.

temwr said...

Sometimes they replace her with someone slightly less ugly.

Mills said...

Mat -

I sadly agree with this:

"I saw Stranger Than Fiction and am deeply saddened to say I thought Maggie Gyllenhaal looked oddly attractive."

temwr said...

She has a stunt double for certain shots. It helps prolong her career.

Isiah Thomas said...

Frank Beamer has chimed in on the Va Tech shootings. Tell us how you feel Frank. WTF. Who cares what he thinks.

I forget what comedian it was, I think Chris Rock, talking about how on 9/11 MTV got Ja Rule's thoughts on the matter.

W-T-F

WWL has a question up about objection to the Confederate flag in SC.

Pretty much all the northern states object.

None of the soutern ones do, except Florida.

Nobody should be shocked at that breakdown.

el diablo blanco said...

people are flipping the phuck out about this shooting stuff..

the one lady just said "im scared, i have kids in college!"

ok, first of all, theyre in NY. 2nd of all, what are u gonna do about it anyways sitting here on your ass at your job?

youre like my grandma, getting all worked up for shit u cant control or arent even remotely involved in.

feel bad and everything, but phuuuuuuuuck people. stop acting like youre involved in it.

Isiah Thomas said...

wait, I went to college, I'm in danger!

el diablo blanco said...

i have a shirt that says COLLEGE that i bought from Hot Topic.. shit, i better keep my head down!

ben said...

shirley is chatting from spain today? I wonder how they do that. Their internets must be able to link up with the US internets.

temwr said...

They have a CAT 5 cable that goes across the Atlantic.

temwr said...

And that cable hooks right into his computer.

temwr said...

The more and more people that go to college, the more and more likely it is that they will have some crazy fucks in there.

ben said...

cool

el diablo blanco said...

all the shit hit the fan because we let women get rights.

first they vote, then they go dutch on dates, then they go to college and their enraged boyfriends shoot up the school.

women with rights = the downfall of man.

temwr said...

hmm, i am unsure i have a counter to that logic.

it appears flawless.

Isiah Thomas said...

if it bleeds for 7 days and doesn't die, how can you trust it?

Isiah Thomas said...

you have to love CNN "Send in your photos/videos of the shooting"

Mills said...

simmons on right meow.

temwr said...

I don't like people who sit there and video tape and take pictures of some dude shooting up the place.

They need to be telling people to get the fuck out of the way. Or running out of there. Dipshits.

Mills said...

SG on DP. Shirley on Chat. Work productivity = zero.
