Weekend Recap

Let's get things started with NASCAR.

The race was down in ATL yesterday, Jimmie Johnson wins his second race in a row. It was a pretty good race, up next : Bristol. The COT will debut in Bristol so that will definitely be something to keep an eye on. Mark Martin continues to lead in points but is sticking with his plan to run a partial schedule. I'm not sure what his complete schedule is, but with the Chase now expanded to the top 12 in points, he still just might qualify although that is a long shot.

Golf - Vijay Singh won yesterday, although since Tiger was never in contention I never really paid attention, also golf was about 41st on the priority watching list yesterday. Moving on.

Juan Manuel Marquez beats MAB in a unanimous decision. I didn't order the fight and will catch the replay on HBO this weekend coming up. Say what you will about boxing, but the lower weight classes have great fighters and are always making great fights.

Niba - Kobe notches back-to-back 50 point games. Stu Scott's lazy eye popped out of his head with happiness. For as great a player as Kobe is, he doesn't make his teammates better. But outside of Odom the Lakers don't have much, I mean, how much better can anyone make Kwame Brown?

Also - the Celts got slapped with a $30k fine for "excessive" contact with Kevin Durants family. I wonder if Ainge axed Durant's mom for hand relief from his Durant boner.

TOURNEY TIME

Saturday had a ton of good games which helped invigorate a rather bland tourney. Chalk was ruling the day mostly. Wisconsin bows out rather unspectacularly. Their coach is what 85 yrs old? Wisconsin...gotta go gotta go. Feel free to discuss the action further in the comments as I don't feel like recapping every last highlight, game, play, etc. Personally, I think on Oden's fifth foul he should have been called for an intentional foul - which probably would have completely iced the game for Xavier. Nevertheless, OSU made a great comeback. Oden keeps giving me reasons to think he's no where near the undisputed #1 prospect.

The First Annual LOV Fantasy MLB draft
was also held yesterday. It went quicker than most thought. I haven't even had a chance to look at everyone's team. There were some interesting early selections, but overall I think there are some good teams. I love my team, Cory Lidle Airways, a solid all-around team. And if anyone is looking for some decent middle releivers, please glance at my team and make me a trade offer. I'm looking for a SP, 2B or SS.

LOV Tourney Bracket :

Top 5:

1) ihitthebottomoftherimonalayup - 56 Pts.
2) Dr. Jellyfinger(wag) - 52
3) Millsian Supreme - 550
4) Don't get beat by a chick! - 49
4) Let EA's Puppies Breath - 49
4) ebntx - 49

Bottom 5 :

21 dontallowmetointroducemyself - 37
22 Sports Ho's Picks - 36
22 Drexel Got Screwed - 36
22 Piss Ice All Stars - 36
22 BRINGDAMUFUGGINRUCKUS - 36

LOV Movie Review

I got a chance to see 300 this weekend. Not bad, its a very entertaining movie. It was very well done, and the special effects weren't over the top. The fighting scenes were pretty brutal but still flowed with the movie. It had everything a movie goer would want in a movie : gratuitous violence, a good story and boobies. Overall I'd give it 4 out of 5 Prince Chills.

Please adhere to the LOV rules for work on a Monday.

Best Regards,

Mgmt.

I know it's been kind of talked about before but not sure there were ever definitive answers. But for about half of the NCAA LOV brackets, I have no clue who they are.

For instance, in the top 5 (really 6), who is it that's leading and who is "Let EA's Puppies Breath"?

For the record though, "Don't get beat by a chick!" tied for #4 is me. ;-)

I'm last, funny cuz my money bracket at work I'm 3rd.

Oden thre the kid four rows into the stands

Butler can hit the three
Pac-10 has three teams in it, when i thought they would only have one.

and Sosa let me down

ElP, I'm actually 2nd at my money pool at work, but I'm not too confident anymore on where I'll end up. Suddenly Pitt and Memphis in the Final 4 don't seem like such a good idea. The one good thing for me is that the leader has all 4 #1 seeds in the final 4, which if I'm right has never happened.

The most amusing pool at work is the girl who has Winthrop and Holy Cross in her final 4, with Winthrop making it to the final. Oops.

TP, what's happening to the Lightning? 6 points back now and fading fast it seems.

But around here people are starting to get real excited about the Thrashers chances in the playoffs, especially with how Lehtonen's been playing and after beating the Sabres yesterday (took 2 out of 3 from them this season).

Re: NCAA
I am looking forward to this weekend when the brackets get sorted out even more.

Re: NASCAR
Mark can miss 2 or 3 races and still make it if he runs well. Last year 12th place was 600+ points out.

Re: NCAA
I wonder what SG is saying about Durant now. I expect a column blaming everyone but Durant, or saying something like, "this is exactly what the celts need because when they pick number 2 durant will definitely be there now."

ToddPacker said...

yea beth the lightning have been playing like crap lately... although they played well against the sabres sat night, buffalo just played a little better... well see, maybe they can make a push in the final 10 games or so... looks like it might be thrasher/lightning in the 1st round

Re: Watching games live

So on friday I got to sit in the luxury box for the games. Totally awesome. You got a game in front of you and a TV behind you. Plus it was the only place in the stadium where you could have beer because of NCAA rules or something. So even though games 1 and 2 were complete blowouts I was able to watch the games on TV and drink beer. Also game 3 featured my sleeper pick of Illinois crapping away a 12 point lead. I don't even remember what game 4 was at this point.

Side note: The refs in Columbus were terrible all weekend. They destroyed the flow of every game.

Side note two: The Virginia fans cheered "Let's go 'Hoos" WTF?? WTF is a 'Hoos? please advise. They had a sign and everything, so I am sure it was 'Hoos.

Sunday's games were viewed from the nosebleeds. Quite a let down from the luxury box, but it was good to be back in my normal element. I had a fat guy next to me, an even fatter guy next to him, a guy from the Ohio State band behind me who knew "everything" about basketball and another guy behind me doing play by play on his cell phone for his buddy. The Virginia/Tenn game was close, but again the refs totally ruined any flow. The So. Ill / VT game was a blowout.

So in conclusion, even though every game I watched was shitty, it was an awesome weekend.

RE: SPs

You can play as many SPs as you want per day. You just want to rotate them in and out depending on when they are actually starting. Or if they have a bad match up you might want to sit them.

"Official University of Virginia sports documents explain that Washington and Lee baseball fans first called U.Va. players "a bunch of rowdy Wahoos," and used the "Wahoowa" yell as a form of derision during the in-state baseball rivalry in the 1890s, presumably after hearing them yell or sing "wah-hoo-wah." The term "Wahoos" caught on around the University and was commonly in use by the 1940s. "'Hoos" became the more accepted nickname throughout Grounds in student publications. In recent years, the Hoos nickname has become a nickname used by students and recent alumni of the University, and it is also commonly used in the media in reference to U.Va. sports teams."

re: Suns

It's funny, Thursday morning people were annointing the Suns as the team to beat, calling the Mavs win a season changing victory. This morning you'd think they had the worst record in the league.

Personally, the Detroit loss was understandable. Like I said in the comments, when C Webb is throwing down reverses its not your night.

I didn't see the game Saturday but heard that Denver was on fire and Phx gave little to no effort, with part of Denver being on fire was PHX's lack of effort.

To me, the only thing that is troubling is the effort. The two L's didn't hurt, except now they have zero chance of overtaking Dallas unless Dirk gets un-Magic like HIV. Luckily San Antonio crapped the bed last week also.

Also - the local sports talk was saying how D'antoni was having closed door meetings and telling people like Jalen Rose to get ready.

The Mavs win trumped everything though.

You'd think the Suns were like the Nuggets and fighting for the 7/8 seed.

Isiah Thomas said...

If you’ve heard this before don’t pay attention.

Our league is head-to-head meaning each week your team will be matched up against someone else’s. Your goal is to accumulate as many points in each of the scoring categories. Our categories are as follows : offense: Avg, RBI, HR’s, OPS, R, and something else, for Pitching : W, ERA, WHIP, Holds, Saves, K’s – this type of scoring is known as “6 x 6” (6 offensive and 6 pitching categories).

Each person you start will contribute to your totals, if Gay-Rod goes 3-4 with 2 HR’s and 4 RBI, those stats get added to your weekly total. At the end of the week, each stat category total equals a win or loss, ie. If you have 40 RBI’s and your opponent has 30, you “win” RBI’s for that week. The winner in your matchup is the team who wins the most categories that week. Your overall record is updated accordingly.

You can make roster changes daily – with the deadline being before that players game starts. Our starting player rules are : C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 3 OF and 2 “UTIL” (any position). I think our Pitching slots are 3 SP, 3 RP and 2 P (any SP/RP). You want to maximize the amount of starts you get per week if you have good SP or SP matchups. Yahoo will tell you if your pitcher is starting that day by putting a “ ^ “ symbol next to the team he’s facing.

Like I said, you can make roster changes daily or you can make them all on one day. For example, if it’s Sunday, you can still set your lineup for Thursday by clicking on Thursday’s date.

I’m going off of memory for the stat categories and player requirements but I think you get the gist.

El Padrino said...

he can still score and he passes well

thanks for the FBL sheet, i used my copy and paste skills and printed it

Mills said...

Suns shouldn't mess with anything. They probably know catching Dallas is not going to happen, so they are on autopilot for a couple weeks, knowing that they are pretty much guaranteed a 2 seed. They will turn it back on in time for the playoffs. No need to make drastic changes. Though in Jalen can still play team basektball (if he ever could in the first place) he would help their bench a bit as he can play 3 different positions.

To answer an earlier question... I made the job switch cause I'm sick of being in a field that has paid me crap for 15 years. Radio is fun, but it gives you just enough money to live paycheck to paycheck and not great benefits for most people.

In the financial field, even though I may have to be entry level for a year and get some training, the possibilities for promotion will open up in a big way down the line. And I can always keep radio and DJ work as a weekend job on my terms.

That, and I was sick of having almost no vacation and outrageously expensive health insurance at the current job. The new job has such great benefits, I'm absolutely giddy. I'm already going to save over $200 a month in health insurance. That's a raise in itself.

Plus two months of paid training to get my licenses and yearly bonuses. The training alone was worth it. My job will basically be going to school for two months. I like that.

if any of mills' trades go through, veto will come into play.

that's a ridiculous deal.

Boo.

Isiah Thomas said...

Rev - does "customer service" entail a lot of sales? If so, I'd like you to revist this "land of milk and honey" outlook you have on your job after your training to see how sales pressure differs from your radio bitterness.

Rev - does "customer service" entail a lot of sales?

Actually, no. I don't have to sell. I'm going to be more of an advisor to existing clients who call in and want to work on their investments. You start in the call center and work your way up.

I know plenty about sales. I've done some radio sales along the way. I know that pressure.

El Padrino said...

yea weas, dont be that guy

Isiah Thomas said...

that's good rev, I was just wondering if after a few months the "sales pressure" would get you as worked up as your radio gig did.

LOV needs to create a fake corporation for Rev to peddle to his clients.

temwr said...

I've heard great things about LOV, Inc. It's management team has it heading in the right direction.

Isiah Thomas said...

"yes sir I do have a suggestion, LOV, Inc. has been giving me chills"

The Rev said...

I think I could do sales. I've been told many times I should do it. But not on a strict commission basis. That part scares me.

Fake corporation... it would be more like a fake fund.

"I recommend the LOV Fund. It is an aggressive fund which invests in beer and sporting goods companies."

El Padrino said...

LOV INC contunes it's dominance in the blog world, reporting growth in thier earnings every quarter since the IPO.

Isiah Thomas said...

Rev - will you have to wear a headset mic? If so they'll have to bust out the equivalent of an airplane seat belt extender for the headset to fit over that heeeeeed.

"Hey chuck do we have anything that'll fit a size 8 and quarter head?"

Chuck : *falls out of chair and dies.

change out beer for "consumable products" and we might be onto something.

re: trades.

thome is not getting near enough love from you guys.

Dude hit 42 jacks, 108 runs, 109 rbis. That is huge. And since OPS is in here, he contributes there too.

I look to see what a team needs, and try and fill it.

Podsenik is a sb guy, nothing more. But he is a guy capable of swiping 60 sbs, and that is hard to come by in this league.

If you add up the stats of the guys I offered for the guys I was getting (mostly 2 for 2 deals) they aren't near as bad as most of you would be led to believe. Its not a keeper league. all that matters is this year.

i like to make deals. i have said a million times to make offers to. gotta start somewhere. just trying to get the ball rolling.

the person you have to watchout for, is corbin. he is sneaky.

El Padrino said...

MARCH MADNESS 2009 is brought to us by "LOV INC" who remind us that "every day is a LOV day"

Mills said...

rev -- you can meet and make clients dj your weddings.

and for the first dance we will play "endless love." would you like to discuss your investment options at this point.

full-service stop. huuuugee potential. in more ways than one.

Isiah Thomas said...

mills ax yourself if you would accept the trade if it was offered to you, I doubt you'd make any of those deals.

Stud players for 3 scrubs who's numbers add up to the same production is a worthless trade.

your paternal parent said...

corbin.. weaz's OTHER account.

Mills said...

that last post was NOT english.

The Rev said...

Rev - will you have to wear a headset mic?

I didn't ask. I guess so.

I'll probably need one of them Motorola NFL head coach sets, and of course a guy next to me in charge of wraping and dragging the cord.

Mills said...

always depends on needs zeke, but i obviously i wanted the other players. that is why i accepted them.

i am trying to add balance (ie. Sizemore or Crawford or Abreau type players) for a power hitter...Thome.

Isiah Thomas said...

is mills playing grammar nazi again?

Mills said...

last year in a keeper league, I gave up Teixera AND Manny for Pujols. I knew what I wanted, and overpaid for it. It just depends on needs.

The Rev said...

Consumable products, sporting goods, and adult periodicals.

Our portfolio would include Budweiser, Modells, and Playboy.

Mills said...

i don't play grammar nazi. i said my previous post was not english. was non-sensical at best.

Isiah Thomas said...

rev - request the NFL headcoach style set up...then always carry a large laminated sheet with you and use it to cover your mouth as you field calls.
