It's Friday and I got nothing clever for the title

What's going on with Nascar? Is it like Questec? Why, all of the sudden, are they really clamping down on these guys? I don't care but there are alot of people that do. Just trying to gauge the interest. On the way in I was listening to Waltrip's brother on the Imus radio show and he said that there have been some rule changes and in the old days they would just tell you not to do it again but now, you get fined and sent to the back of the start line.
It's funny how some sports don't interest people until there is a controversy.

America loves controversy. The only time I watched figure skating was after Tonya Harding took to Kerrigan's leg like Paulie Walnuts.

Anyway the All Star break is here. And if you haven't heard it's in Vegas.

Last night Dallas won to improve thier best league record to 42-9. We all think Dirk deserves this years MVP, unless Nash comes back and Phoenix goes on another winning tear.

Cavs smash Lakers who needed this break in the worst way.

As for the festivities I hope Nate Robinson blows a kneecap in the dunk contest. Then while he's hurt the Knicks trade him to the Rockets. That way we would have another "choking" incident except it will be the coach who chokes the player.

My money is on (no, I'm not actually betting this):

Slam Dunk - Gerald Green (he's got wingspan)

3PT Contest - Jason Terry

Rooks vs. Sophs - Sophs (I might bet this)

2ball - don't care

For the actual game, you have to go WEST. And hope no one gets hurt.....unless....forget it.

In other news, still no coach in SD....I say they should hire Ryan Leaf

Forsberg is a Predator, Arnie Swchwarzzz says :"Get tooo da choppperr"!!!!

Sakic scores 600th, impressive but I bet his apartment doesn't have many leather bound books.

Pitchers and Catchers are in the building, and that gives me wood.

Solid game on for Satruday College ball

Florida @ Vandy - Vandy gave them a heart murmur last time

UCLA @ Arizona - AZ needs this for Pac-10 play

UNC is @ BC....Skinner has big teeth

Saluki's @ the Butler Bulldog's !!!! Hey both are ranked..........
Hi Bill.

El Padrino said...

he's right about jet fuel tho
jet fuel has kerosene in it, would the spark plugs that are in the v-8 engine combust if jet feul was running thru them?

El Padrino said...

now helicopter fuel would work, maybe it was that

ToddPacker said...

ep, now that you’re driving to work, you should step it up to satellite... i’ve got a 1 hour commute and love me some satellite

EP - re:clamping down on these guys?

NASCAR starts its season with its Superbowl. Last season some mofo's tried some hijinx and got caught. This year it got worse so they're trying to send a message.

Also, Waltrip is running Toyota's, and a lot of people don't like Toyota being in the sport, so they are coming down tough to send a message there also.

H said...

Tem, my advice to you would be a couple things.

First, obviously, is make sure the bands you are looking at play the type of music you'd want at a wedding. I know this sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised. We played a show where we did one set of all hard, heavy rock, and someone asked us if we'd want to play a wedding. I turned them down because I knew we weren't the appropriate type of music. Basically, you should look for GE, or general entertainment, bands.

two, check out a couple of bands you are thinking about at their shows. Don't necessarily let them know you are there or are looking to hire them. Check how they interact with the crowd and if it seems like people are having a good time. Make sure they aren't taking excessively long breaks in between sets. Most important thing at a wedding is that people have fun. If the band doesn't engage the people there and takes long braks every half hour, then people will not have fun at your wedding.

three, when you find a band that you like/want to hire, try to see if you can lock them in without using the word "wedding". Say event or something similar. "I'm planning an event and I'd like to hire your band to play it." The reason why I say this is because everything for a wedding costs more than it normally would. a band that may charge $500 a night usually, may try to charge you 1500-2k. I'm not joking, I've seen it happen.

Lastly, once hired, make sure you go through the song list thouroughly with the band, if you feel this is necessary. Not everyone does. But some people don't want to hear certain songs at their weddings. If this is the case for you or your bride-to-be, make sure that the band understands that these songs are not to be played under any circumstances, even if requested. The last thing you need at your wedding is for someone to start sobbing because the band played a song that reminds them of their dead puppy.

Hope this helps man. Good luck.

ebntx said...

better yet, here is a list of holidays for all tx state agencies.

bask

Ben said...

I get 6 paid holidays a year. stupid company

H said...

sorry to everyone else for the long post.

ToddPacker said...

this is all i get:

New Year’s Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Thanksgiving Day
Day After Thanksgiving
Half day on Christmas Eve
Christmas Day

Isiah Thomas said...

Dirk was filthy last night.

temwr said...

excellent thanks H.

What is the policy on asking the band to play a specific song for the first dance? one that isn't on their playlist. is that just not allowed?

We have an agency here that books shit for weddings/events what nots. Would you suggest going through them or going straight to the band? The agency seems to act as some sort of consultant with setting things up, helping you out with the timing of things, etc. I am sure they add a charge in there for all that, I'm not sure it is worth it.

temwr said...

no worries on the long post, the good rev posts 3 and 4 scrollers from time to time.

ToddPacker said...

h, 5 scroller... very rev-like

Martin VanNostrand said...

eb - what's a Skeleton crew? it sounds wicked.

temwr said...

TP same as you although I also get a half day on New Year's eve.

Isiah Thomas said...

Nothing like having LBJ's birthday off.

That is some Arlen, TX type shit. Laddddddy Bird.

Isiah Thomas said...

I think State Agency is TX code word for Execution Chamber.

temwr said...

yep

ebntx said...

"skeleton crew"

essential personnel only. that means i am taking off.

Isiah Thomas said...

TP - same holiday schedule here.

Isiah Thomas said...

in TX, "skeleton crew" = just the minorities work, not the white people.

Martin VanNostrand said...

tem - you should be able to ask them to learn a song. I know some dudes that play weddings and corp events in addition to clubs (sometimes they hire me for club gigs to spin inbetween sets and sit in on a few songs with cuts or samples) and those guys will learn specific stuff for weddings if requested.

Isiah Thomas said...

tem - are you going with a band and not a dj?

I'm thinking I'll prob go with a dj bc I'm not sure too many bands could pull off "It takes two" by Rob Base to my liking.

ToddPacker said...

so tem, what's your wedding song going to be?

H said...

Usually a band that has done weddings will pretty good at how things work at a wedding and will ask you what you want played for each thing (first, dance, bride/father, etc.) If they don't know the song you want, I think most would learn it. Standard logic is you've hired the band in plenty of time that they can learn a song or two.

An agency would be very helpful to you, but yes, would likely cost more than going to the band itself. It might be worth it to you if you have the $$ to spend and want to focus on other aspects of the wedding. i know there are like 192 things on the checklist. Basically, like anything else, compare. Talk to the agency and see if you can get an idea on cost before you commit to anything, then talk to a few bands and compare prices.

ebntx said...

"in TX, "skeleton crew" = just the minorities work, not the white people."

definately not, i am the minority and my ass aint working.

Martin VanNostrand said...

Oh and what H said is true. Price always depends on the event.

temwr said...

Band is required per the girl and the girl's parents.

And since the girl's parents are footing the bill I will not argue.

If I had to pay it would be 100% DJ.

Isiah Thomas said...

"in TX, "skeleton crew" = just the minorities work, not the white people."

just a joke, after seeing "Confederate Hero's Day" makes you wonder....but still, just a joke.

temwr said...

Not sure on the song. We still need to decide that one.

I might make it be a country song but the band won't be country. They (the band) might balk at that. I'll let them put their own spin on it though.

temwr said...

actually zeke it is the opposite, on skeleton day the white people work because they are white like bones.

Isiah Thomas said...

tem - clear this up for me, FMZ seems to think we (as in me and her, prob more like just me) foot the bill for everything.

Aren't the bride's parents supposed to pay for most stuff?

Please advise.

El Padrino said...

tem, for you :
"you knwo you make me wanna shout, kick my heels up and shout!!

HEEEYYYY AAAA HEEEEY
HHHEYYYY AAA HEYYY

Martin VanNostrand said...

"too many bands could pull off "It takes two" by Rob Base"

exactly Zeke. Thats why these guys hire me. During their breaks I'll play some of the hiphop stuff they can't pull off and everyones a winner winner chicken dinner.

El Padrino said...

zeke dem was the olden days

El Padrino said...

so tem and rev are getting hitched this year

tem when's the funeral?

Isiah Thomas said...

zeke dem was the olden days

you mean the bride's parents paying fo shit?

bc FMZ's pops has them DEEEEEEEEP pockets

ToddPacker said...

zeke

my wife's parents paid for most of the deal... i think my parents paid for a couple of things like rehearsal dinner, limo and flowers... the only thing i paid for was the friggin rings

Martin VanNostrand said...

Zeke - Traditionally the brides fam is supposed to foot the wedding and reception, the grooms fam the rehearsal dinner. However, times are not so much traditional anymore. If they offer to pay for it take whatever you can get. If not your on your own. at least you got a hook up for flowers.

ToddPacker said...

i guess i got married in the olden days

temwr said...

old school way is bride's parents pay for everything but the booze and the rehearsal dinner. groom's parents pay for that.

new school way is the bride and groom pay for almost everything. i have a lot of friends that are doing this.

but me and the girl are both only children so we gots it made.

if FMZ is an only child start throwing things like McDonalds out for the dinner and FMZs parents will wise up and ante up.

Ben said...

we paid for about half of our wedding. But her parents loaned us the money for a portion of our half, then told us we didn't have to pay them back. But it was the fact we offered to pay them back that got them to foot more of the bill.

H said...

Zeke, the tradition is that the Bride's parents foot the bill, but more and more people have started to get away from that and a lot of the couples have had to foot the bills themselves. Not necessarily a bad thing if you can save for it yourself. Less meddling from parents and future in-laws if they aren't paying for stuff.

temwr said...

ceromony is 9-2-2007.

funeral to follow.

Ben said...

It also makes a difference on your age in my opinion. If you're 30 and getting married, you're probably established enough to pay for your own shit. If you're 19, then daddy needs to help.

temwr said...

I'll take the meddling from the parents if I get to save thousands of dollas.

Mills said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
Mills said...

pippen coming out of retirement? even a possibility?

Ben said...

I think it also depends on total cost of the wedding. My wife's parents told us they'd give us a set amount and anything we went over, was on us.

H said...

So just out of curiousity, since most of you guys are either hitched or soon to be hitched, are TJW and H the only single guys who frequent the LOV? well, and CMfost. I doubt any woman could tolerate him for long!

Just playin CM.

El Padrino said...

we had to pay most of it
we paid for hall, dj, rings, honeymoon....her folks paid for limo's and her dress

my fam paid for flowers and invites

all this is the reason i am in debt

tem ur lucky

Isiah Thomas said...

I don't mind meddling if it means I pay less out of my pocket.

And I told FMZ that idgaf about most of the decisions about colors, etc. Just tell me the date and time and I'm good.

Ben said...

H-
Are you looking for a wingman or something?

El Padrino said...

it's gonna be a crazy year tem
women get nuttier and nuttier as the days draw near

ToddPacker said...

"all this is the reason i am in deb"

true, ep... NY weddings are crazy expensive

ToddPacker said...

"lov table?"

i heard rev is going to have a lov table

Mills said...

tem -- though you were asking H, i will chime in.

we did a band for our wedding. its not a bad way to go. only downside, they couldn't learn the song we wanted them to play for the first dance, so we went with something on their playlist....neither one of us remember what is was now, and it was only a year ago.

ask to see their playlists and ask for referrals.

El Padrino said...

zeke i told her i wanted control over two things

menu
and
music

that's all i care about, and menu included beer/liqour making decisions

i had that shit on lock down

Ben said...

My wife was actually quite calm right before our wedding. But she is a great planner and had everything set, and it all went extremely smooth. My advice, don't go with the cheapest vendors, use the people who will help you through it all.

temwr said...

Is thundercunt single?

Isiah Thomas said...

Tem, the daily "plow your wife" comment is a go for launch, moderation is off. Repeat, go for launch.

Ben said...

Tem-
My last piece of advice, which i'm sure you already know. Make sure every vendor, including the band, signs a contract with you.

Martin VanNostrand said...

" DEEEEEEEEP pockets " that fool should pay for it all then. Try this when you talk to FMZ.

"Baby this is your wedding we're talking about. It's the last big gift your father can give to his little princess. You will always be his little girl but on that day he will really be giving you away. He knows you've been planning this since you were a child and playing "wedding" with your friends. Don't you think he wants to give you that happiness, that special day you will carry with you forever. I don't want us to rob your father of that joy. I just wouldn't feel right."

Isiah Thomas said...

menu/music - good call EP, will keep those for my own decisions.

temwr said...

we are going to see the band that is at the top of my list tonight to scope them out.

I am hoping that if we book them sometime during march that they can learn a song by labor day weekend.

temwr said...

and yes i directed my question at H, but certainly anyone is free to chime in.

Isiah Thomas said...

I don't want us to rob your father of that joy. I just wouldn't feel right."

I will start practicing this part of the speech tonight. Maybe try to add a single creeper rolling down the cheek as I say it for added emphasis.

on the real I'm sure her pops will hook up his lil girl.

H said...

nah, ben, was just curious. It would explain a couple things.

Spaceman Spiff said...

the mencia shit is getting old, but kod's argument about him getting called out by non-"HOFers" is lame, or making another person's jokes better, which he doesnt. kod probly likes getting credit for shit someone else did. If i read a book, then edit it a little then re-publish it, thats obviously plagiarizing. its the same shit. also, if you were mexican, george lopez stand-up would be hilarious

H said...

And Zeke, I was wondering how ling it would take for someone to notice moderation was off.

H said...

MV, that's a pretty good speech. Did you just think of that, or have you used it on your woman?

El Padrino said...

yea, the one thing i hate when i go to a weeding is when the food is crappy and they only hav e on brand of beer

wtf

it's a celebration

i had 10 different beers, 5 diff scotch and vodkas, etc

people remember the food and the music, that's it
no one remembers the favors or the fucking table linens or fucking flowers, no one
let them get lost in that shit and worry bout real like issues like music and food, that's my advice

Mills said...

weddings these days are redonkulous. wifey spent at least 7 hours a day on theknot.com when we were planning ours. keep her off the internet tem. that is my best advice for you.

El Padrino said...

nice diatrabe mvn

Ben said...

DS was dumb enough to put it in the post, that moderation was off, instead of just turning it off and letting it be. It's almost like he was inviting it.

But i say we just leave him be.

El Padrino said...

tem make sure the food and music is good otherwise your wedding will suck

Ben said...

Tem-
I'll be watching for my invitation in July.

Regards.

Isiah Thomas said...

I still vote for a plow your wife comment if Tem so chooses.

ToddPacker said...

"tem make sure the food and music is good otherwise your wedding will suck"

why do i get the feeling that food and music are also pretty high up on the rev's wedding list

Ben said...

It's his birthday, let the man be.

H said...

Is the Godfather really preaching restraint to the LOV in regards to DS. El P, I'm impressed.

The Rev said...

DJ's are better than bands for weddings.

The best part of wedding planning was going cake tasting, i ate a lot of cake, and then going to the catering company to "taste" our menu. Free dinner every night for like a week, that was cool.

El Padrino said...

Too late. Sadly. Zeke if your girl hasn't hit this site then put that shit on block now.

"food and booze."

our food and booze tab is going to be outrageous. it is un-fucking believable.

"plow the wife"

i kept it simple, no point in trying to hard, if i send high heat he'll shut down the comments again.

Mills said...

DJ's are cornholes, present company excluded of course Rev. Bands are classy.

The Rev said...

At the very least Tem, you need a Dj to play during the breaks.

Bands need breaks. DJ's keep music going forever.

I'm a little biased against bands at weddings.

Martin VanNostrand said...

Yeah Zeke a tear would really sell it.

Since I have a daughter this will all come back to bite me someday.

temwr said...

dj was vetoed by the person footing the bill, no dice there rev.

our centerpieces our cakes for the people to eat.

i have no effing clue what our colors are, what the flowers are, or anything else like that. my points of interest are, food, drink, entertainment.

Ben said...

Yeah, Bands are classy, remember Old School. That band was real classy. Or the Wedding Singer, Jon Lovitz was total class.

temwr said...

For sure there will be some music playing while the band is on break.

The Rev said...

Yes, food and music were very high on my list.

And for our wedding, we are sharing costs across the board. My family pays a chunk, her family pays a chunk, I'm paying a chunk, and she's paying a chunk.

Mills said...

Our band just threw in some CD's I had pre-made for the breaks. No need for a DJ when you have a band. :-)

El Padrino said...

fuck bands
dj's rock when it comes to weddings

bands cant get it "crunk"
unless MVN is the shepard

Ben said...

I went to a wedding where the cakes were the centerpieces. Nobody ate the cakes, expect to have a lot of leftover cake.

The Rev said...

Zeke said it perfectly.

You need someone who can get It Takes Two to your liking.

Remember... no one ever is disappointed when the actual song from a CD is played. But sometimes, people are disappointed when a band plays a cover song.

Ben said...

There is a chick on DS comments, complaining about Yahoo not posting its fantasy baseball yet. I say we recruit her.

ToddPacker said...

The last thing you want, is some lead singer from a band grabbing himself while he's singing all the time...

temwr said...

leftover cake is OK.

better than owning 20 vases with stupid marbles in them.

or better than renting 20 vases with stupid marbles in them.

That's the problem Mills.

Pre-making CD's for breaks means you're not reading the crowd during those points and adjusting the music accordingly.

DJ's mean much more musical flexibility.

Yes, I feel kind of strongly about this.

Band + DJ means best of both worlds.

H - I just made up that speech but anyone feel free to use it or pass it along.

temwr said...

That is why you get an all girl band.

Ben said...

For photos we chose to have the guy just give us the CD's of all the pictures. Digital world we live in now. We could pick and choose what we wanted to print at Target for like $2 a picture, and we could load them up on the web.

all smokin hot

and easy

but not too slutty looking, that way the old folks don't throw a hissy fit.

i hate it when old people complain about stuff.

The Rev said...

Being in the business, I'm getting great deals from a DJ friend and a photographer. It ain't free, but it's about half price.

For the record... all LOV folk are invited to the afterparty at the hotel bar.

And our centerpieces... handmade baskets we picked ourselves with fake flowers, bottle of wine, candle, and some food goodies which will be given away. It's cheaper, more personal, and much less of a waste than full flowers.

ToddPacker said...

hey rev did you guys put up the super bowl pod cast yet?

Ben said...

My younger brother followed us around at a day we met a bunch of vendors. He's getting married this year. He was blown away by 1) the cost of things, and 2) the number of details that go into it.

"food goodies"

...tastykakes?

The Rev said...

And as the favors... I'm burning a wedding mix CD for people. It's going to be the same songs we play during dinner.

That reminds me... I gotta get cracking on the burning. It's a bitch burning over 100 cd's.

The Rev said...

Not yet Todd. Gotta put the finishing touches on it.

The Rev said...

You're right Ben. There's a ton of details.

I thank God I am in the business. I knew what to look for.

Ben said...

So somebody mentioned this earlier.

Is Pippen really going to try and make a comeback. The guy hasn't been in the league in like 5 years. If he does look for him to be wearing purple and gold.

The Rev said...

And the food goodies... actually, not too far off.

I'm thinking a little bag of cookies from the Melrose Diner, which is a local institution. And she's thinking of adding some Indian goodies.

We don't screw around.

Martin VanNostrand said...

So Pippen, he's 41, says he was to come back for the last two months of the season or so. Play point forward in a limited minutes type of role. Per Mike & Mike this morning the Suns or Heat would be a good fit as they need reserve help pushing the ball.

Also, Sir Charles and Dick Bavetta are supposed to have a race fore charity? I need specifics, and does Vegas have a line on this?

El Padrino said...

wait, this pippen thing is a joke right?

Spaceman Spiff said...

no joke, i say he asks the lakers to play with em

ToddPacker said...

pippen

Ben said...

Maybe Timmy Hardaway can make a comeback to finish out the season too. The Heat need a PG.

Ben said...

I think Bavetta will run circles around Chuck in that race. I don't see Barkley moving very fast for any reason.

El Padrino said...

scottttiieeeee

Martin VanNostrand said...
