It is not 60 degrees here

Another cold and crappy day in Columbus. The schools are closed again. Last week they closed because it was too cold, this week the roads are too bad. I am going to be laughing my ass off when the kids are still going to school in July.

It has probably been said before but Britney is shaping up to be Anna Nicole the sequel. Except this time she has more money and amazingly more trailer trash ability. I am positive this will not end well either, but it will keep the folks at E! employed for quite some time. If I worked at E! I would be sending Britney a Christmas basket every year. Just as a way to say thanks for keeping me employed.

Oh yeah, this is a sports blog, better talk about that stuff. It's not news anymore, but Marty got himself fired. There are only a select few who can routinely fight with their boss and keep their jobs. A coach who loses in the playoffs isn't one of them. Either Marty is a dipshit or just applying something he learned from Larry Brown. I'm not sure how many years the Bolts are on the hook for Marty, but I suspect he will be chilling with Tiki on NBC this season. Of course now the Bolts need a new coach. My guess, hell I don't know, let's go with Rivera.

So Kris Benson is out for a year, does this decrease the chances of seeing his wife in the news? If so, I think that it is a good thing. I'm pretty sure I've already seen her nekkid so there is nothing else left. I'd say sex tape, but 1) that probably already is out there and 2) Kris might be in it, which is a bad thing.

Finally random sports shit: Nash is hurt, sucks for the Suns. The Braves are for sale/sold, save that tip money Beth, maybe you can put a late offer in. WVU crapped the bed against G'Town, figures. Bill Cosby's dog won something, who cares. Ohio State is number 2 in the AP and coach's poll...does anyone really think they are the 2nd best team in the nation? Nobody in Columbus even thinks that. I am so happy they have a playoff.

OK that's enough, have at it.

That Norbit movie grossed like a zillion dollars.

I am so behind on watching new movies. I haven't seen a new movie since the new Pirates movie. I think that was 7 months ago, at least.

I have no idea who would go see Norbit -- it looks AWFUL.

Mills said...

tem - i agree that ohio st is NOT the number 2 team in the country -- what i didn't expect was that Columbus is actually realistic about them.

What is the feel for the team there? expectations?

i think they get bounced in the sweet 16.

Since I've apparently been appointed the LOV Braves spokesman (none of that politically correct "spokesperson" bullshit for me), I have to say no one in Atlanta seems to give a crap about the sale. It was a MUCH bigger deal when Ted sold it to Time-Warner. This team was Ted's team and when he gave up control it was a very sad day for Atlanta sports.

whocares said...

Who is the second best team in the country? UNC?

I'd say after UF there are a bunch of good teams.

Beth82678 said...

And just for the record, I still say Tem and Mills (and everyone else on here) needs a pic. Tem, for you I'd suggest this.

Mills said...

beth -- if i ever get cagey enough with this internet thing, i may hook one up. who knows?

temwr said...

I think Columbus is still shell shocked from the football loss to Florida.

If you talk to most people they are very pessimistic (for them, which ends up being reasonable). They figure Ohio State is Sweet 16 or Elite 8 material. Outside chance at the final 4.

Mills said...

WC -- Wisc might be the Number 2 team right now. UNC - an argument could be made certainly.

I am not saying OSU doesn't deserve it right now, I just think that they are not going to go deep come tourney time. There is just something about them that doesn't knock my socks off.

temwr said...

No effing way on that pic.

temwr said...

Part of me is all riled up now and part of me can't stop laughing at that pic.

Mills said...

Unlike Texas with Durant, who could single-handely carry them to the final four, Oden just isn't as dominant... though they have a better mix of veterans and rooks than people realize.

i don't know...there is something i can't put my finger on that stops me from really believing in them.

temwr said...

People in Columbus would rank the following above the Buckeyes (in general):

Florida
UNC
Wisconsin (reverse psychology)
Texas A&M (general fear of all things Texas)
UCLA

but not Pitt (no clue why not, but everyone around here thinks Pitt is over rated..which they might be)

temwr said...

Ohio State plays down to the level of their opponent (See Purdue, Northwestern games), and doesn't rise up to challenge a better opponent (see: Florida game).

That shit gets you killed against really good teams and leaves you prime for an upset against mediocre teams.

They just lack a killer instinct.

temwr said...

Re: Pic

I might go the way of the pic, but I am still stuck in my old school ways of no pic. I will not conform!

temwr said...

fuck AXE

CMFost said...

Hey Tem did you see Pitt get there asses handed to them by Louisville last night at home. That is the reason people might think they are overrated.

H said...

Didn't Anna Benson file for divorce last year? I could be wrong...

Mills said...

i think pitt is salty. they only have 4 losses - Louisville, Marquette, Wisc., and Okie St. All good teams.

I am not picking them to win it all (or go to the final four even), but they are 22-4 and certainly a team that can play ball.

Mills said...

h - they got back together i think. where is ben, he will know.

Beth82678 said...

She filed for divorce but then withdrew it.

CMFost said...

according to her website and wiki they are still together

H said...

Thanks for the link Beth.

"Anna Benson, an actress and model who has posed topless". It's kinda sad when this sentence is what sums up your entire life.

Mills said...

"[Cubs general manager] Jim [Hendry] spent a lot of money. I hope he has more for 'Big Z,'" --Carlos Zambrano

He says he is leaving at the end of the year unless the cubbies pay "[that man his money]."

This is why the Cubs will always be the Cubs, and the Cardinals are class act well oiled machine.

name the money -- "he beat me, straight up. pay him. pay that man his money."

H said...

And I'm definitely grabbing a copy of The Departed today El P.

temwr said...

Re: Pitt

yeah I saw that. People around here were saying Pitt was over rated all year. Columbus folks usually reserve that kind of speak for Michigan. It was odd to see them hate on Pitt from the get go.

temwr said...

Re: Pitt

Also note my saying "which they might be" in regards to the over ratedness of Pitt. That part of the sentence was referring to the dismantling at the hands of UL.

H said...

whoa Zeke, I thought ball busting was encouraged here at LOV?

It's because you make stupid comments like this that i make fun of you.

You are like the CEO that has to tell everybody that he is boss,

whocares said...

H,

Boston doesnt need a spokesman. Between SG, Affleck, Jimmy Fallon, and every other obnoxious bandwagoner out there.... I think Boston's covered

Isiah Thomas said...

I'm not mad, just responding.

Gotcha Zeke. The "your messing with a made man" retort didn't come off like ball busting to me, but rather serious anger. my apologies, sir.

Spaceman Spiff said...

zeke, a lot of hotels have ads that cover half the hotel, not just all star game stuff, but the luxor had tmac and gilbert all-star ad for adidas covering 1 side of the pyramid.

ok, but in Boston's defense, we hate Affleck too. No one voted him for spokesman of the city, it just somehow happened. Sports guy is ok at times. And fuck Jimmy Fallon. He is a New Yorker. He will never represent beantown. I have no problem with NY'ers in theory, but no true NY'er would ever try to rep Boston, or vice versa.

Spaceman Spiff said...

h, i think you have to play at lower end hotels for the drunk guy to show up and stay

Mills said...

howard is really proving to be a force. dude is still only like 20 years old. rebounding machine, and will get better at that and scoring.

and...as weak as it may sound here...a good person by all accounts.

great role model for the NBA to have really.

H said...

Well, Rev, MV has seniority over me, so I'll defer the title to him. I gotta serve my time to earn that title.

Ben said...

Spiff-
Where were you playing?

Mills said...

H - you can have Tampa. Nobody really wants the D-Rays, and Chucky just wants somebody...anybody (even a bostoner) to report on his bucs at this point.

H said...

Spiff, I'm a struggling musician. Trust me bro, I'm not playing at any high end hotels.

The Rev said...

However, MV is no longer a Boston area resident. You are. So there could be a battle for power.

Ben said...

D-Howard is a very very religious guy if I remember right? Might come back to haunt him though when he starts throwing haymakers at somebody.

H said...

Mills, I may consider your offer. We do have a New Englander on the D-Rays in Rocco Baldelli, though he's spent more time on the DL than the field over the last 2 years. No Bucs reporting though.

Spaceman Spiff said...

i was at the luxor, and if you are looking for a good game, do not go there, but if you are looking to get paid, by all means.

The Rev said...

Come to think of it, we could probably link each person here to some cast member of the Sopranos if we tried.

Isiah Thomas said...

the re-bust getting lost fits perfectly here....

someone busts some chops, like your first comment to me, then someone (me) busts back and its not acceptable. F that.

Like I said, we can do this, I'm willing to move forward, you've said your piece, I've said mines.....

The Rev said...

I thought we already had a Tampa resident here.

H said...

I've already been compared to John Popper on this board, Rev. If someone goes all Sopranos and refers to be as Bobby Bacala, I may go postal on someone...

Re: Spiff's poker story.

Me and my buddy Jimbo snatched 85 bones off this drunk guy at bowling a couple years back. We were playing hold 'em for funking quarters. It was really sad. We just kept looking at this guy's buddies and they were like "hell no. Take ALL of his money." It was hilarious.

Mills said...

Rocco Baldelli is from NE? That strikes me as funny. Shouldn't he be from the Bronx, or Italy or something?

Can I get a ruling on this Elp?

whocares said...

"i was at the luxor, and if you are looking for a good game, do not go there, but if you are looking to get paid, by all means."

Ummm, is there a difference? Isnt a good game one where you are constantly getting paid? Maybe I have been misunderstanding this whole gambling thing.

Mills said...

who is the tampa resident?

H said...

Yeah Rocco is from Woonsocket, RI. About 10-15 minutes northeast of Providence. Big Italian population in RI, so that probably would explain the name.

The Rev said...

Actually, H, Bacala is a made guy. You are more new to the crew. More like a soldier trying to get made.

I have to work on this.

Mills said...

If H can't have Tampa, he can have Omaha. Nobody wants Omaha.

The Rev said...

TP I believe is Tampa, isn't he?

H said...

That's cool, Rev. I was more referring to his weight than his status within the family.

I'm psyched for the final 8 eps. I just hope they are a bitter better than the most recent season.

Hey Rev, back to the Departed real quick, let me know what you thought of it when you finally watch. I'm curious if I liked it so much becaus eof the Boston ties, or if it really was a good movie.

The Rev said...

I can make these links for certain...

ElP = Paulie Walnuts (for the NY accent alone)
FH = Big Pussy (cause Pussy left and returned as well)
JFreak = Christopher (the young hothead of the crew)
Temwr = Silvio (the steady consigliere)

H said...

Who was Tessio? I know I should know this, but I'm drawing a blank.

Isiah Thomas said...

Rev didn't see The Departed in theatres?

WC --

We weren't handing out cities. Rev was talking ATL sports with Beth. H wanted to know what was up with Boston. Boston is taken, so I was just joking around offering up Tampa.

Really is going nowhere. Probably needs to end right meow.

Mills said...

that meow was for your Corbs

Steve said...

Just got back from lunch, heard "You Gotta Fight..." by the Beastie Boys on the radio.

I don't care how old I get, when that song comes, I'll instinctively reach to turn it up.

H said...

Mills, I'd say good Super Troopers reference, but Meiz would get mad. So I'll keep it to myself for meow.

Mills said...

Corbs -

Maybe your mets can go after Big Z, instead of Johan, now...

Isiah Thomas said...

Tessio is from the Godfather, one of the original 3 to start the shit.

He ends up trying to betray Michael and he gets 187'd.

The Rev said...

Zeke...

I agree. You are way more powerful than Ralph Cifaretto.

You might be our Tony, and Beth could be your Carmela.

Whereas I may have the Uncle Junior role wrapped up.

H said...

on a "meow" side note, my buddy's band covers the song Whatever by Godsmack. One night he was singing it, and for on line he kept saying "meow go away". We were rolling.

p.s. why the fuck hasn't anyone gotten one of the 10 keepers off of Freeze's team...is it their reluctance or Freeze's?

The Rev said...

I did not see Departed in the theater. I missed out.

But I'm making up for it tonight.

H said...

That's right! thanks Zeke. Got my mobs crossed there. I knew the name sounded familiar, but couldn't put it in the Sopranos context. Now I know why.

Mills said...

Beth82678 said...

Damn Rev, I was hoping for Dr. Melfi maybe, the voice of reason. Instead you have me sleeping with Zeke???

Isiah Thomas said...

I agree. You are way more powerful than Ralph Cifaretto.

It wasn't about that, I missed most of that season but didn't that guy get smoked and wasn't he taking a dildo in the ass?

DSteve is Ralph.

Corbin said...

Mets have money coming off next year...if Z is available they will offer him 18 a year. Johan won't be a FA until after 08...so IF he reaches he'll be contacted by the Mets...if nothing more his agent will try and use them to jack up the price

In reality, having the reputation as being a team that "jacks up the price" really isn't as bad as it seems...the agent will at least keep you abreast to the negotiating going on with the other teams...even if it's the mysterious (read: ficticious) team

Omar = best GM so, no worries

The Rev said...

Beth... good point.

Maybe you should be Dr Melfi.

Mills said...

Freeze is a sack. That being said... I may be able to get Santana from him.

And fantasy talk ends now.

The Rev said...

Yes, all of that is true about Ralph. I only made the Ralph reference because of the made guy line. That was his big line when Tony punched him in the face. "YOU CAN'T HIT ME... I'M A MADE GUY!"

Mills said...

I hate him (Z), but he is the best young starter to hit the market in a long time. and durable fo show.

Mills said...

mets will need Z to replace Petey and Tommy

Ben said...

I got nothing, just wanted to chime in.

H said...

Thanks for showing up, Ben.

The Rev said...

And Tony was the one who smoked Ralph in the end.

Spaceman Spiff said...

i requested the departed dvd for valentine's day, ms. spiff better accommodate

Corbin said...

He hasn't hit the market yet...but i sure hope he does...

What could you possibly offer for Johan?

And no, he would not post sub 2 ERA. He is the best pitcher of this generation...but will not be as effective pitching inside once he steps to the plate on a consistent basis...

he is filthy though...2.5 wouldn't be out of the question

Mills said...

Miggy is angering the higher-ups in Florida. They should just trade him to the Cardinals already. Miggy and Pujols - both under 27? I get chills. Prince chills.

Isiah Thomas said...

Tony punched him in the face. "YOU CAN'T HIT ME... I'M A MADE GUY!"

ah, had no idea since I missed most of that season.

Mills said...

He puts up a 2.5 in the AL. his hitting with not matter when it comes to his pitching. people don't bean the pitcher in retaliation. they bean the opposing teams equal hitter. I say he posts low 2 era's, and if in a pitchers park (chavez revine, mets, petco, etc.) then watch out, we could see Greg Maddux 95 like era.

Ben said...

Isn't ralph the guy that Tony smashed his head against the floor to kill him off?

Mills said...

or whatver that year was that he went 1.92.

Mills said...

i have done absolutely ZERO work today.

Mills said...

i have done absolutely ZERO work today.

Zeke, that was actually a pretty good season IMO. If you have access to the DVDs or wanna shell out the 80 or so bucks, I highly recommend viewing it.

Mills said...

Corbin said...

Cards don't have the prospects to touch Miggie...though having him on my keeper team do like the fact he's angering them...get out of that lineup and go to a real team.

Saw a list of Cards top 10 prospects, and after laughing when they said they only have one impact prospect noticed nothing is available until 09 at the earliest

Mills said...

Martyball is really not getting an LOV luv today. I think it is a good topic. Apparently I am the only one.

The Rev said...

He not only smashed his head, he strangled him too. It was the strangling that did him in.

Then Tony cut off his head and put it in a bowling ball bag.

Mills said...

Or how bout the fact that Durant "only" put up 21 last night. I was disappointed in that....that is how high my expectations have become for him to put up 30?!?!?! a game!

Isiah Thomas said...

h - might have to check it out then. I missed that season and parts of others. I'll netflix them to get caught up.

Ben said...

Didn't he kill him over the fucking horse or something?

Dikembe Meiztombo said...

Mills said...

cards do to have prospects. Colby Rasmus will take over for Edmonds in 2 years.

Duncan is our power outfielder of the future. Reyes, Wainwright, Hawksworth are the core of our rotation for the next 5 years. we are in good shape.

Mills said...

we can't all have lasting millege-type prospect (read: huge TUP, but as for real production. none).

Isiah Thomas said...

Spiff what are the rooms like at the Luxor?

The Rev said...

The horse was the last straw. Pie-O-My was it's name.

It died in a fire. Tony and Ralph both owned the horse. It was a racing horse. Tony took it really hard. But Ralph showed a little indifference to it. It made Tony believe that Ralph may have set the fire on purpose to colelct insurance money on the horse. That ignited the argument in Ralph's kitchen which started the brawl.

Classic moment!

I guess he's a bust now that he's had 160 AB's in the majors filling in for injuries as a 21 year old in the majors...

He'll be a star...just needs more seasoning/plate discipline that will come with being assigned to AAA this year

he needs to check his ego at the door, and learn how to play ball the right way. talent will only take you so far.

Cowherd was making a case for Carrol and Cowher this morning too. Then trying to send Jeff Fisher to USC if Carrol took the Whales Vag job.

Now I have to go get pizza for all the people in the office.

Apparently since it is snowing outside old people need to order pizza and send me to get it.

I guess the free food is worth the 5 minute walk in the snow to go get it.

Still not sure why the hell the place doesn't deliver.
