4 for yo money

I know our resident wire watcher Spiff broke this news yesterday but since I live over here I might as well tell you that this trade was welcomed in Yankee land. Randy was a bust in NY depsite a overall winning record. He was brought here to win playoff games and he failed. Typical year was last, where he went 17-11 with an ERA a smidge over 5.00. Then lost his playoff start against Kenny Rogers. See ya later birdman. Yankee faithful are now clamoring for Roger Clemens, again. *Yawn*

So Cowher bounces. It seemed as if that was the case all year. Truth be told he was a very good coach. When he jumps back into this thing he may well be the highest paid. I hear that Dolphin job is his if he wants it. But it sounds like he wants to take it easy for at least a year.

Shell is gone. Gamblers around the world, put yo lighters up. You'll miss him.

Nothing much on the hardwood last night, cept for College and that doesn't get interesting til February.

For some reason there are two Bowl games on that have no business being played this late into the bowl season. Cincy vs. Western Mich & So.Miss vs Ohio. WTF? I'm 16-12-1 heading into these two bowl games.

73-91-2
Rough year. I'm a fraud. Even John Anthony from Two for the Money would have sucked this year. Dogs were a ridiculous 70-something% this year. Most winning outright. No excuse though, any good handicapper would have noticed the trend and adjusted accordingly. Luckily I don't own a house. Otherwise it'd be gone and some guy named Vinny would be living in it.
Let me see if I can redeem myself with a 4-0 Wild Card Weekend.

SEATTLE -3 over Cowboys :
Who could figure out either of these teams? This has to be a total 50-50 call. I mean Dallas reels off a few wins in a row, look like world-beaters, then get bitch-smacked at home by the Saints, Eagles and Lions. Seattle loses to Arizona and San Fran but showed some fight in losing to San Diego. Then in a tune-up game last week they handidly beat a bad Tampa team. It seems as if they are starting to come along. Remember, Hasselback and Alexander both missed significant time with injuries this year. The thing that scares me a bit is the cornerback position for the Hawks. Kelly Jennings on one side and who knows on the other. 3 top CB's are out. However I still think Hasselback passes all over the field on Saturday and takes Seattle to the second round.

Cheifs +7.5 over COLTS :
Do you think Larry Johnson will get some carries this weekend? I say Cheifs lose but lose close. This has the makings of a Vinateri game. Cheif D ain't all that good but they'll be jacked up after seeing LJ carry the ball 40 times. Colts offense has to be patient and not fall in love with the big play. If they do that they should be in position to win the game late.

Jets +9 over New England :
In the year of the underdog this spread is pretty high. Maybe NE is getting that respect because of their past performances in the playoffs but shit, 9 points? Mangini has impressed everyone around the league with his ability to motivate and gameplan. I would think he's got another good one left, espeacially against the man who raised him (in football). Brady played last game against the Jets on his back, as Mangini blitzed an astounding 36 out of 44 times last meeting. It will be interesting to see what Belichek has learned from that game. I say Jets lose by 4.

Giants +7 over EAGLES :
I can't figure out this Giant team. So much is on the shoulders of Eli Manning and most of the time he's come up short. But for a defensive unit that should be on of the best to end up being ranked 25th in the league is a bit more disturbing to me. A part of me thinks Jeff Garcia is going to come down to Earth but he's been real solid for a month now. Westbrook finally has showed that, at times, he can carry this offense. Tiki has done that for 5 years now. This could be it now. He is due to retire and we all know it's not beacuse he is not capable. I expect 9 men in the box to try and stop him. And for once, I finally feel like Eli will take that as an opportunity to make a few plays. Step up young man. Make a damn play.

Randy should be better in the national league, most pitchers are. But he is damn old. And ugly.

I think the SH was the best gambler this year...

temwr said...

There is always one first round blow out in the NFL playoffs.

Who will it be this year? I guess the top competitors are Colts and Pats, but I think the real blow out will be a suprise.

Or perhaps because everything is fucked up this year there will be no blowout because nothing else has gone to plan this year.

Hot chick volleyball was awesome.

After the first game she took her long sleeve shirt off and played in her tank top. So that was nice.

When hot chick gets into volleyball position in booty shorts and a tank top there is no bad angle to be looking at her. It's a winner in every direction.

Yeah, I liked that quote too.

Top of page material?

El Padrino said...

Pennsylvania envy, rev?

Martin VanNostrand said...

Could be. It's wicked funny.

temwr said...

To stay 15 years in the league with the same team in this era you have to be a damn good coach.

El Padrino said...

161 wins rev, all with one team
that's an average of just over 10 wins a year

temwr said...

Put me on the side of Cowher being one of the greatest coaches of all time.

15 years, 161 wins, so that is more than 10 a season. In this day and age? That puts him in my top 10 or 5 for sure.

temwr said...

el pad beat me to the math...

The Rev said...

Maybe a little envy. I won't dispute that.

But really... it took Cowher how long to get over the hump? And all that time, he was allowed to keep coaching through years where most coaches would have been fired. If you coach 15 years, at least one title should be mandatory in that resume. He should really have two or three to justify coaching with one team that long.

And on more than one occasion, I thought his act on the sidelines was overdoing it. And he really didn't seem that damn bright either.

Good coach, yes. Great in the HOF realm, not even close.

El Padrino said...

im in the minority as far as the whole "title" thing goes.
steelers contended just about every year and dont forget that Neil O'Donnell stripped him of Super Bowl title #1. I mean they easily should have won that game, EASILY!!!

El Padrino said...

judging by titles is not fair
espeacially for a coach

temwr said...

I will give you that he should have won or made a couple more Super Bowls, but he has a ring and 161 in 15 is damn good.

The Rev said...

Someone wrote that the Steelers never had two bad years in a row under Cowher.

Ummmm... 1998 and 1999 they had two consecutive losing seasons. And they were worse in 99 than in 98.

Most coaches would have been canned after that. That's all I'm sayin.

Isiah Thomas said...

Rev ease up.

I've already gone on record saying Cowher will be the next coach of the Skins and I pray he is.

Remember he's what only 51? He could coach another 10 years.

Having the most wins over the last 15 years is pretty dang good. Considering he's had the likes of Neil O'Donnell, Kordell Stewart, etc at QB.

temwr said...

Getting to the title game is how I would judge him, and he should have done that a couple more times. El Pad is spot on with the point about O'donnel, that bastard earned the Boys a ring.

At the end of the day though, I can't think of too many coaches I would put ahead of him.

Isiah Thomas said...

they need to do away with only 2 teams per conference in the BCS. Then add a ND competency clause.

Even if ND meets their easy requirements for a BCS game, if they shit the bed in all their "good" games then they don't get in.

I think TJW sent the e-mail to pops White to get his thoughts.

El Padrino said...

Zeke Fucks My Mom said...

Wake beat ND? I don't really no that much about it, but that just doesn't sound right. This is the ACC Wake right? They didn't create some other Wake just to fuck with me did they? And thats who you guys are talking about?

The Rev said...

Top 10 coaches...

(we will keep it to the Super Bowl era)

1. Vince Lombardi
2. Bill Walsh
3. Chuck Noll
4. Don Shula
5. Tom Landry
6. Joe Gibbs
7. Bill Parcells
8. Jimmy Johnson
9. Bill Belichick
10. Hank Stram

Other coaches in the Super Bowl era I would take over Cowher for the record...

Tom Flores
Weeb Eubank
Dick Vermeil
George Allen
George Seifert

And other coaches I would at least have to debate as to whether they are better than Cowher (in other words, Cowher is in this pack somewhere)

John Madden
Mike Shanahan
Mike Holmgren
John Gruden
Dan Reeves
Marv Levy
Bud Grant
Andy Reid

Dikembe Meiztombo said...

I was Um-ing TJW

El Padrino said...

steve wake forest had a tremendous year in football, they gave Louisville some fits early but evenutally lost 24-13.

The Rev said...

The only difference between Andy Reid and Bill Cowher is that Cowher has won one and Reid didn't.

The Rev said...

In other words... Cowher is not top 15 in my book.

Maybe top 20. And I think there's a debate for that.

Isiah Thomas said...

Rev if you're comparing Cowher to all time greats then yeah maybe he isn't too high on the list....

but compared to current NFL coaches....

Crennell
Marinelli
DBag in Minnesota
etc

Zeke Fucks My Mom said...

ep

Hell Yea!! the SEC, Pac-10, and Big 10 are overrated....the ACC is the best football conference.

Yea!!!!!

thejaywhite said...

wake would get crushed by ND..oklahoma would struggle too as would boise and FLA..

martin is correct..I emailed pops white..not rev...i will post response here..

The Rev said...

Current NFL coaches... OK, then I'd probably put Cowher top 10. But that ain't saying much.

I thought we were talking all time.

El Padrino said...

wake is the only team i'll give you as ND beating

Florida and Boise would literally destroy ND....Oklahoma would beat ND by 2 or 3 td's.

Boise would score like 100 on ND's secondary

thejaywhite said...

yacowher is top ten in NFL right now..all time..no way..although I think its hard for any current coach to be top ten all time...since parity makes you lose all the players you collected...like if pitt got to keep plexigo, odonnell, all those fat linemen, they would have had a good run..but not sure if they ever woulda won with that collection since they didnt win with them that one year...

plus for cowher to be top ten all time..he has to prove he can come back and go to a new team and revive them regardless of hte situation like a parcells

Martin VanNostrand said...

new logo - who knew George the Animal Steel was a NASCAR fan?

Isiah Thomas said...

100% serious - FLA would beat ND by at least 50, at least.

temwr said...

I'm talking all time on Cowher.

ND is probably the 19th best team in the land.

thejaywhite said...

FLA barely beat a shit FSU

Isiah Thomas said...

ND should have lost to shit MSU and UCLA.......

Spaceman Spiff said...

FSU has a semblance of a defense

Isiah Thomas said...

factor in end of season, instate rivalry....just win.

Hot damn if I'm not defending FLA and the SEC!

Fuck that.

thejaywhite said...

but they didnt..and u can say that about any close game..you can say FLA should have lost to FSU......a wins a win..

El Padrino said...

jaywhite please stop, your sports knowledge outside of ND is pretty good but once you open your trap about ND you look like a fool

El Padrino said...

at least when my team shits the bed i call them out on it and say they shit the bed they dont belong

they have lost 8 or 9 bowl games in a row, two of them on a national stage with the supposedly "greatest ND QB ever"

The Rev said...

Today's NFL coaches, who I would definitely take over Cowher right now...

Belichick
Parcells
Sean Payton

Coaches I would have to at least think about before choosing Cowher...

Mike Shanahan
Mike Holmgren
Andy Reid
Tony Dungy
Lovie Smith
Eric Mangini
Jeff Fisher
Brian Billick
John Gruden
Marty Schottenheimer

Only reason Joe Gibbs is not on this list is recent performance. He was a great 80's and early 90's coach. He's better overall than Cowher, but not in the 21st century.

Even top ten is debatable for Cowher. I think he gets there. But on that list, there's at least 4 coaches in the second tier that make a strong case for going over Cowher.

And that Andy Reid vs. Cowher debate is a tough one. I can't say I wouldn't take Reid over Cowher. In fact, I would take Reid. Maybe I'm biased. But Reid's regular season winning percentage happens to be the same as Cowher's (.625 for the record). And Reid looks like he's going to coach the Eagles a few more years at least.

temwr said...

I think I move Cowher in right ahead of Johnson on Rev's list.

15 years in the age of parity and averaging over 10 wins a year is a damn huge accomplishment. Especially in Pitts with people like Neil O'Donnel as his QB.

The Rev said...

BTW... I fully realize Sean Payton's name looks weird next to those guys up top, but I'm taking future potential into account, and I think Payton is the next coaching star.

El Padrino said...

The Rev said...

ElP... right now, if you were looking at building a team for the rest of the decade and beyond, wouldn't you take a guy like Payton who has that future potential, or Cowher who's best might be behind him?

I'd still take Parcells for my team over Cowher. I think he's stuck in a bad situation in Dallas. And I wouldn't wish coaching TO on anyone right now.

Did I get pissed off at Reid more than once this year? Yes I did. I fully admit that.

But I give him credit. He righted the ship.

thejaywhite said...

ya but statistics dont mean much in sports like football..they mean something in baseball where your teammates and coaching style dont affect your individual opportunities..of course brady had great stats...we basically threw the most in the country...

if you went by statistics you would think Smardzia was better than tim brown and the rocket

The Rev said...

Maybe it's a little Shanoff of me. I regret putting Payton's name that high now on second thought.

But if you put the two in front of me and asked me who I would have coaching my team right this second, I'm pointing at Payton and not hesitating.

Martin VanNostrand said...

FLA put up 23 on LSU and beat them by 13. You can't base everything on those numbers but looking at the Sugar Bowl results vs the FLA/LSU game one would think a FLA 54 ND 7 in the box score isn't blowing it out of proportion.

Ok, that was a good one.

That is definitely top of the page material there.

I'm booting the Poindexter comment for that.

temwr said...

4tds ? that seems outlandish.

not possible.

Isiah Thomas said...

Tim Brown only had 12 career TD receptions and Rocket isn't on the list, it only went to ties for 7th or so around 10 TD's.....

Isiah Thomas said...

it makes sense, ND didn't throw alot back then, they were an option/run oriented attack.

Isiah Thomas said...

rocket was ball dipping people in the return game

Detmer won the Heisman that year

temwr said...

The Saints are the ND of Pro Football.

They didn't really play anyone good and when they did they got bitch slapped.

Baltimore L 22-35
Cincinnati L 16-31

Their division is the equivalent of the 3 service academies (and they lost to CAR twice, who underacheived all year). All they have going for them is wins over some NFC East teams.

temwr said...

And the Bengals aren't that good, but that loss was during the Bengals upswing, so I'll count it.

The Rev said...

I admit I cussed him this year. I cussed him pretty good.

I admit he started losing me. I don't remember actually going over the line and advocating firing him. But I will admit that I was starting to wonder if he had lost the team for good. And I will say that if he had turned this season into a second straight losing campaign, I might have been calling for his head right now.

But winning 5 in a row and the division at the end of a season fixes a lot of problems.

Isiah Thomas said...

don't forget the last second FG to beat the Eagles, little lucky for NO.

The Rev said...

The Saints are in a bad division... agreed.

They sucked against the AFC... agreed (but who didn't suck against the AFC this season).

But they weren't supposed to be this good. They had an amazing turnaround, bad division or no bad division. And they play for an owner that doesn't even give a damn, which to me makes it even more amazing.

They rose above their bad division when they weren't even supposed to. That is worth something.

NDs running backs when rocket and tim brown were there..

reggie sanders, jerome bettis, and crap I cant remember the other guy I just thought of him but forgot when I tried to rememember sanders..the guy was on the redskins...anyways all 3 of them rushed for over 1000 yards as rookies in the NFL the exact same year...

thats why ND did not pass

From WWL:

"Darrent Williams' death wasn't unexpected. The glorification of violence in the African-American community has to stop. Jemele Hill"

Who the fuck is Jemele Hill and did he really expect this guy's death? I didn't expect that some NFL player would get shot. WTF. Violence stopping, good message, but starting it out with an outlandish statement like this guy's death wasn't unexpected is moronic.

"don't forget the last second FG to beat the Eagles, little lucky for NO."

I haven't.

That was a very tight game for the most part. The difference was that NO was able to end the game with an 8 minute field goal drive. The Eagles never even had the chance to get the ball back.

When you keep the ball for 8 minutes at the end of the game then shut the door, it's a little more than luck. But at the same time... those two teams were very evenly matched for most of the game.

It will be fun if it comes to a rematch in round 2.

temwr said...

The Saints won that division because everyone else sucked.

They won by default.

temwr said...

I'd go as far to say that the Saints are the worst team ever to get a first round bye.

Shanoffesque....makes me sick saying that.

"Bill Walton thought of the day"

awesome, it feels good to be an award winner. And speaking of feeling good there is no better feeling than a San Deigo breeze flowing across your face while you slip between fantasy and reality to the sounds of bongos and banjo's joing together like two lovers creating an experince so moving and beautiful you feel like your living in a Monet masterpiece. I wish everyone could live that moment with Jerry Garcia picking and singing on my tennis court in nothing but a loin cloth and my son Luke blowing bubbles and flying a kite in background. My wife had just hung a freshly laundered batch of tie dyed games jerseys on the line and the smell of lavander soared into your nostrils like little lukes kite against the sky. The soapy colors of his bubbles dancing in the sunlight like floating orbs of tie dye seeds being scattered from the jerseys as if they were dandilions. You can't put a prince on moments like just like you can't put a price on Coach Wooden's ear hair. It was magical time to living no more or less magical than any moment before or after it but magical none the less. Magical like the...

you've heard the rest a million times.

good pts TJW that's why its sickening to see Quinn, MD and Szmardjia be plastered atop the ND record books and have the national media slob them down.

where was that quote in the WWL? I just looked at her article, and she worded it differently there.

The Rev said...

New SG up...

Tem, you might have more work to do.

temwr said...

new simmons article. not sure if it deserves a diary. some crap then some picks. in the crap he talks about how smart his daughter is...the more I read it maybe it does get one...can i get a ruling from the rev or anyone else who reads SG.

temwr said...

It was on the front page of WWL, under the page 2 tab in the middle where they have a nfl bcs nba tab etc.

Martin VanNostrand said...

I could ghost write for Bill Walton and no matter what i came up with he would probably remember it as actually happening when he proof read it.

From SG's column...

"if you ever want to torture a longtime Mets fan, ask him to make his "All-Time Least Favorite Mets" lineup, then tell him that he can pick only three outfielders between George Foster, Vince Coleman, Kevin McReynolds and Bobby Bonilla. They'll spend at least three hours trying to figure it out."

Yo ElP... how do you respond?

The Rev said...

It's definitely diary worthy.

I'm still reading it. It's a long one.

temwr said...

It is a long one.

I'll do a diary. It might take longer than usual.

The Rev said...

Quote from SG... "With all due respect to the Ewing Theory, I'm supposed to lay seven points in a 2007 playoff game with Jeff Garcia???? Is this a Bad Idea Jeans commercial or something?"

And now that SG has said that, I expect Jeff Garcia to have a great game and the Eagles to win by at least 27.

Thanks Bill!

yup I hate this ND passing team getting all the hype..I like the ND being in the media again but I dont like people thinking these are the best players ever at ND. Its a product of the system, I think walker is an above avg back, and mcknight is one ofthe worst starting WR in the country..SMarz atleast has good hands and he is big. hes a good college player just not an all timer..

tem running diary of SG column

1:41 - topics are playoff picks, end of year highlights, lots of other shit, not in that order.

1:41 - SG liked watching Boise State win...outside of Sooner's fans who didn't? next.

1:42 - Details Simmons' family New Years of sitting at home and is happy he didn't do anything. Well he must have gotten laid instead of shit faced. Good trade off, but really you can do both.

1:43 -

temwr said...

oops

temwr said...

that was a teaser i guess.

The Rev said...

Good start Tem

I hate when I accidentally hit "publish" too soon.

El Padrino said...

not for nothing but SG bought the fastball out today

good stuff

temwr said...

continuing

1:43 - Simmons' family went to Rose Bowl parade, took his SG proclaimed genius daughter. She watched floats for 2hrs without moving. SG is entering the Skunk Patch phase of his career.

1:44 - Watched Rose Bowl, loves UM fight song, thinks Rose Bowl is awesome, but not as good a Lambeau. SG gets free field passes to Rose Bowl game, probably free tickets too...Fuck you Bill. Yes I am jealous.

1:45 - Celts suck, Doc sucks. Ah ha! We are almost to the Sports Guy Exacta! We need something about some Boston buddy and something about Shawshank or Rounders!

1:46 - Fuck me a side bar with his buddy Mike (talking about Philly fans) and a mention of his buddy Gus (talking about Zito). SG is on top of his game.

1:46 - talks about six newcomers (I like that word) on the HOF ballot (Baines, Davis, Bonilla, Belle, O'Neil, Canseco), Rev already posted the best part of these paragraphs.

1:49 - SG saw Borat, apparently liked it. IDGAF

1:49 - EXACTA!!!! Ding ding, winner winner, chicken dinner. Stern is "a cigarette and a shotgun away from turning into the warden from Shawshank."

1:50 - SG is happy Saban goes to Bama because Saban is a good coach in his division. IDGAF

1:51 - SG loses reg. season to SH by 1 game, extends through the playoffs to try to win. If I am the SH I 1) get a divorce 2) pick the exact way SG does so he can't win. Also I am positive that SGs record is not a good as he says it is, he counted some wins that just didn't happen.

1:51 - SG writes 7 paragraphs on playoffs. Summary is the playoffs equal a crapshoot. Vintage SG there, shit loads of words to say 1 statement that is obvious. Gives himself an excuse to blow every pick.

1:53 -SH speaks : Britney is not suprising to her. Her main advice to Brit " concentrate on showering and wearing underwear every day. It's a noble goal."

1:55 - SG picks: COLTS (-7) over Chiefs Indy 37, Kansas City 22, Cowboys (+2.5) over SEAHAWKS Dallas 30, Seattle 23, Giants (+7) over EAGLES Philly 21, New York 20, PATRIOTS (-8.5) over Jets
New England 31, New York 10.

1:56 - Note that SG does typical Pats fan shit and says that they were just playing possum all year and are better than they let on. Umm, ok...

1:57 abrupt end to column after picks. I guess he was tired.

The Rev said...

SG had some quality stuff.

The SH sidebar was unreadable to me.

The Rev said...

"EXACTA!!!! Ding ding, winner winner, chicken dinner. "

I almost spit water out my nose reading this.

Classic!

The Rev said...

Remember... SG was protesting that he really hated it when sports columnists talk about their kids while doing just that. So he was trying to temper it.

He took a shot at writers like Skunkpatch, but then moved one step closer to doing it.

The Rev said...

And just for the hell of it and a Scarlet Z...

good job Tem.

The Rev said...

Well screw it... I'm going for Platinum.

Isiah Thomas said...

good to hear SG recaptured his fastball, maybe 2006 was just an off year

The Rev said...

Personal favorite prt of SG's column... the mention of Eric Davis.

That guy was supposed to be the next Willie Mays. I saw him play against the Phillies and he hit a grand slam against us in the mid 80's. I thought he was gonna rewrite the record books.

And I have several E Davis rookie cards now that combined couldn't get me a subway token.

The Rev said...

Zeke... finger wagging me on the platinum Z.

Denied!

temwr said...

Saying I hate when people talk about their kids, but mine is a genius is still lame. 100% Skunk Patch territory.

All in all though, a good SG column.

Isiah Thomas said...

there is no way SH only beat SG by 1 game, I'm thinking she won by 10+....

The Rev said...

Man, if Tem thinks it was a good column, it must have been really good.

SG bringing the heat today.

temwr said...

I would recommend it to be read as opposed to outright skipping it in favor of the diary.

The Rev said...

It is a banner day when you get a good SG column, and a good Tem running diary in the same day.

I feel like I got an early birthday present.
