Weekend Recap

Its that time again.

CFB:
By now everyone knows most of the top teams squeaked by. The bottom line, just win. Maybe this weekend's games highlighted some problems with CFB. If you don't win with style you get penalized. Then you have to try and compare opponents, etc. Just win and move on. The BCS #1 and 2 didn't change with Louisville moving up to 3. Just win.

Also - Joe Pa, come on guy. If he returns this week he's just axing for trouble. And if he comes back on the sidelines with a cane or wheelchair that has got to be demoralizing for his team. You can say maybe it will fire his team up but I don't think it will. This latest episode just points out his frailty. And he doesn't wear a headset. He has no clue what's going on, he's a glorified spectator. Retire buddy, catch the early bird special at Nibblers.

Boxing
Pretty Boy Floyd puts an end to Baldomirs recent run of success with a dominating performance. Pretty much shut the guy out. For $50 I was hoping for a knockout. His post fight interview with Larry Merchant was probably the highlight of the evening. He basically ball dipped LM and LM, acting like his drunk self, didn't seem to notice nor fight back. And I don't for a second believe PBF will actually retire now.

Also, Shannon Briggs won one of the heavyweight belts back from Sergi Liakovich. I mention this only because the fight was in Phoenix and Briggs knocked the guy through the ropes with 1 second remaining in the final round.

NASCAR
Tony Stewart wins again. #48 takes the lead overall. This season has been going on forever, only 2 weeks left and its still up for grabs. Post race highlights include members of Scott Riggs crew knocking over Kevin Harvick, his wife and a NASCAR official. You stay class crewmember. One note : if you're fighting cancer and look like uncle fester don't try and be an announcer. Take the rest of the season off BP.

NFL

Detroit? Miami? WTH?

The Bears got completely ball dipped by Miami, AT HOME. Pressure Rex GROSSman and he wilts. Keep throwing like you're playing Vanderbilt asshole.

Incredible ending in Washington. I had already started the bitter beer face before the Vandershank's attempt. To win the game like that was incredible, never seen anything like it. Shortly after they won though - I realized they were 7 seconds away from the end of Old Man Brunell. They pretty much need to run the table to have any chance of the playoffs. Don't tickle my balls Skins. TO - his celebration penalty didn't hurt the Cowboys - shut up about it media. Now his drops - that is a problem.

Indy - ball dips the Patriots. Say what you want about their D but with Manning at QB you'll win a lot of games only giving up 20 on the road. Can't wait to see what SG cries about now. Maybe some of the pass interfence penalties called against the Pats, maybe Vinatieri missing 2 FG's, most of Brady's 4 picks being off tipped passes. Eat a dick SG.

Lance Armstrong runs the NYC Marathon in less than 3 hours. I saw a quote from him saying he's never run more than 16 or 20 miles, I think he said 16. Saying he'd rely on his competitive spirit or experience to get him over the hump. That and/or some PEDs. Lance - seriously get a fucking hobby. Chill the fuck out and relax.

Alright that's all I got.

Man, I don't think Lance doped, I think he's just a machine. He'll be swimming next.

temwr said...

Suck it SG. The Pats had a terrible gameplan. Adam V kicked poorly and the Manning man ball dipped the Pats on the road.

I hope Simmons was crying.

yeehaw the colts won...

and go see Borat.

funny. as. shiat.

It pains me to say it, but yes - Joe Pa must step aside. His son must step aside, as well. He is NOT a very good quarterbacks coach, and he has trouble calling a game, offensively.

Nice work, Skins!!!! Can't wait to hear more T.O. fallout.

Zeke Fucks My Mom said...

How sad is it that, that's the first thing I thought when the Pats lost. Temwr summed it up perfectly....Suck it SG!!!!

Hi Bill...doushebag

temwr said...

And seriously, I am not in the mood to hear how that penalty of TOs cost the Cowboys a damn thing. Heck, didn't M. Harrison get a similar penalty??

TOs drops have arguably cost the Boys two games now, let's see the media harp on that for awhile.

El Padrino said...

agree on joe pa, time to go buddy
it was a great run...

The colts over not hittin was the only miss in the pros. Vinateri had the under I guess.

I almost had a massive coronary watching the Skins game. That was insane, at least now we have something to be happy about when the season is over, if it isn't already.

I'm sad about one thing...

I enjoyed making jokes about Peyton Manning playing in Foxboro. It was so much fun for so many years.

I don't think we can make those jokes ever again. Bummer!

temwr said...

I know not many people pay attention to NASCAR, but this whole Riggs' crewmember shoves Harvick and knocks Harvick and Harvick's wife down is pretty entertaining. It sucks that she aparently twisted her ankle, but NASCAR needs more fights. Cars going in circles is entertaining a bit and when they crash it is more entertaining, but the real fun comes when the drivers and crews fight each other.

El Padrino said...

thanx ST
i nailed them, made alot of $$ this weekend.....

skins win was tremendous, glad the jints held on, just win.
Bears had six turnovers, any nfl team would have beat them (cept for AZ) with 6 TO's...

Beth82678 said...

Steve, Lance actually has already done the swimming thing. As a teen he was kicking ass in triathlons, beating older and more accomplished guys, but then the bike part of it just kinda took off for him. Rumors in the triathlon community are that he may be looking to return to that.

(And I don't know why I bothered clarifying this, I know how the board feels about Lance. :-))

And Iam (if you're still alive), I think you and I were talking about this before, but I saw cerebral palsey comedian Josh Blue this weekend and he totally rocked.

Isiah Thomas said...

I still can't get over the Skins win.

Now they play Philly, it will be their 3rd game on the road where the home team is coming off their bye week.

Fuck, if they hadn't lost to Minn and Tenn at home they'd be in a great position.

At least for a week they gave us something to cheer for.

Convict #21 on the field, but #1 in our hearts.

temwr said...

I just hope that the Colts wins prompts the SG to never ever ever compare Peyton to Arod.

It's not so much that I like Peyton, but Arod is such a douche that comparing someone to him should only be used in extreme cases, it's not something you should be throwing around lightly.

Isiah Thomas said...

Peter King guy in my office is in the running to win our weekly confidence picks pool. All Seattle has to do is win.

I'm not even in my office for 5 seconds and of course he sprints into my office telling me about it.

Peyton is a better QB than Brady. Brady alone didn't win 3 SB's. And yes I just regurgitated Bettis argument.

SG will create a "Buck Showalter" theory if they do.

El Padrino said...

Brady is great but so is Peyton.
May be even greater. I think championships are valued too high when it comes to ranking players. Espeacially in team spoorts. I mean jeses, Dan Marino was one of the best QB that ever lived. Give him Terrell Davis one year or Emmitt Smith and bam he's got a title. Let's not forget the Raiders went on the road in 2001 and beat the Pats. That tuck rule fumble was as fugazy as ever. And for all of Brady's last minute drives, Vinateri won them with clutch kicks.

Isiah Thomas said...

"3. I have a disease -- November Burnoutitis. I'm going to call my pro football editor at SI, Mark Mravic, today and tell him about it. "Every year about this time, I get totally burned out, and this year it's especially bad, with the NBC and HBO gigs on top of the magazine and Web site work. I won't be in for the next two weeks. Gotta get recharged. "

Seriously, SP, WTH? You cover football for a living. Granted you do gigs for two companies but its not like you're covering football for one channel and something else for the other. Prepping for one is prep for the other. I'd kill Coach K for his job.

Los said...

Seriously, though - Manning has to prove it in the playoffs. It's nice to beat the Pats in the regular season, but it means nothing, unless you can win the big one.

tem I don't think he's taking it off, he's saying he wants to.

Also - SP rants about always going for 2 with a mobile QB. That's just stupid. You never go for 2 unless you have to.

temwr said...

All those drugs Lance takes make him jittery.

Isiah Thomas said...

I agree to a point Los, but look at Manning's team.

That D isn't very good, meaning, in all likelyhood they'll lose again in the playoffs.

Based on his individual play, Manning has been the best QB in the game for a couple years now.

El Padrino said...

los i agree but he does step up in the playoffs...vandershank blew it last year, the d blows it every other year. If anyone is overated it's Dung-Beetle Dungy.

the cover 2 scheme is whack.

El Padrino said...

i dont like to give Belichik THAT much credit but shit if he were the coach of the colts they'd win every year with peyton as QB.

El Padrino said...

can we just call Lance "ace" from now on....i had a friend who lost one of his nuts so we called him ACE. his online screen name was ONECRAZYNUT.. funny.

don't want to offend any cancer people or you know if you got over it or something, just sayin'.

that's the only disclaimer you'll ever see from el pad.

Los said...

I agree that Peyton is not solely to blame. That Pitt game last season - the refs kept Indy in it (in my opinion).

And yes, the defense is extremely soft (I don't understand why Belichek didn't run the ball up the gut more last night).

I think Peyton is the best in the game, but he may not be the best leader.

Martin VanNostrand said...

Ace it is! that's funny stuff El P.

The Rev said...

As a fellow cancer survivor, I admire Lance Armstrong. I have one of the bracelets, though I don't wear it anymore.

But I have to admit something has always struck me about him. There's something about him I never really liked.

I'm sure if I were in a room with him, I would be honored beyond belief. But that whole "has to get up and do something every 15 minutes thing" would probably annoy me if I had to live with him 24/7.

Plus, he is friends with GW Bush. That doesn't help his cause.

The Rev said...

And I will now grudgingly admit this...

Peyton Manning is the best regular season QB today.

But he has to get to the Super Bowl to be truly great.

There's a reason we judge QB's by the amount of titles they won. That is the QB's ultimate job. His ultimate purpose is to win games. And the ones who win the big games do better than anyone else.

And for the record, I hate Dan Marino. Great player, yes. But he's such a whiny bastard.

Isiah Thomas said...

at least he's not friends with Hillary Clinton.

ToddPacker said...

Peyton...still gotta win the big game...this goes back to his college days...

Lance...needs to sit this one out for a while....stay out of the spot light.....we get it, you're competitive, you like doing crazy endurance stuff while sporting half a package....

i just think manning is the best qb in the game, talent wise.

i really dont think he chokes at all. also i failed to mention the retard safety who got showstring tackled by Rothlisberger after the battis fumble last year. We're all talking a different game here.
i know, i know-- shoulda woulda coulda. Jus sayin, if manning was a safety he scoops that ball and takes it to the house to have bettis retire a fumbling fat boy.

El Padrino said...

rev, your argument is half right

a shitload of sucky QB's have won the super bowl, dont forget that.

ToddPacker said...

Did anyone see parcels post-game news conference....I tuned into ESPNnews to watch. (Parcels is clearly one of the best news conference guys). Anyway, total let down. He was very low key and then just asked if he could leave. Very disappointing.

anonymous said...

Peyton could start on his own 20, and have 30 seconds on the clock, and get down field within field goal range with like 4 secs to spare.

Brady could get to the 40/50ish, but Manning would make the FG a chip shot, like 20-30 yrds.

he's like a freakin surgeon.

The Rev said...

Oh Peyton has choked more than once in the past.

I saw many of those Foxboro games up to 04. He was choking big time in those. He was making bad decisions, throwing picks, and loomking like he didn't want to be in the cold.

But now, it definitely looks like he is over it. No more kryptonite.

anonymous said...

btw, what did T.O. do? i saw Marvin spike the ball and it nailed a Pats player, and that was hilarious..

The Rev said...

"a shitload of sucky QB's have won the super bowl, dont forget that"

Agreed. Mark Rypien, Trent Dilfer, just to name a couple.

Can you name a sucky QB that has ever won it twice though? Usually the sucky ones only get one.

anonymous said...

and someone explain to me why the monday night game isnt gonna be the Skins/Boys.. and why it is SEA/OAK?

i wish they could do more celebrations, and then minor things like this wouldnt be a big deal.

Did you see it on Friday when you were supposedly home sick?

Beth82678 said...

Iam, don't even get me started on the Falcons. What's this, like the 8th time that Vick has had an awful game after supposedly "getting it"? There was just an article in the local paper like Friday or Saturday about how this time was really different, NOW he's a changed QB so watch out rest of the league. Yep, there's your league MVP.

Of course it wasn't all Vick's fault. I wasn't able to see much of the game but from all I've read and heard the defense totally choked too. Their secondary hasn't shown up the last 3 weeks, even with 2 wins out of those 3.

There's a reason the Falcons have never had back to back winning seasons.

Beth82678 said...

TP, surprisingly the press for UGA isn't nearly as bad as I'd have thought. Richt is clearly a stand-up guy and after what he's done so far at UGA gets the benefit of the doubt everytime. From what I've seen he's almost getting a pass this year for whatever reason. The critcism just seems half-hearted and that the local paper is only going thru the motions.

Thing is, if they beat Tech it'll still half salvage their season.

JFreak said...

Just to clarify, Nick Harper, the Colts corner who got stabbed, was stabbed the morning of the game. I was shocked he played.

I'm really tempted to send 500 e-mails SG's way with the message, "Eat it".

And when was the last time you saw someone get penalized for spiking the ball? Last time I checked, after you spike it, you have no control over where the ball goes. Stupid refs.

Isiah Thomas said...

UGA is just one of the many reasons the SEC is overrated.

ToddPacker said...

that's what i figured...i didn't think he hit the "Zook" level yet. I know he's done alot for the program over the past few years and probably deserves a pass, but UK and Vandy...I think that Urban would be getting serious heat if Florida lost those two games in one season.

ToddPacker said...

CRUSH THEM

then they get their little 2 or 3 million and be ranked 4 or 5 going into next year...fuckers.

ToddPacker said...

ep

i went to a sugar bowl (early 90's, 1991 i think) when UF played ND. Florida was dominating in the first half but Bettis took over the game in the second half and ND beat the gators by 10 or so.

I would rather see UF get to 'zona some how, but going against ND would be cool

Beth82678 said...

Zeke, I definitely agree with TP - the SEC isn't over-rated at all. The problem is there are so many good teams in the SEC and so many of the good ones play each other that it's hard for anyone from the SEC to go undefeated anymore.

Now Georgia on the other hand, THEY were definitely over-rated this season without a doubt. Hard to believe they were top 10 for the first few weeks.

ToddPacker said...

IF OSU and Michigan had to play LSU, TENN, Auburn and Florida this year we would be looking at a BCS with Louisville sitting at number 1.

I agree that OSU and UM are clearly the two best teams in the country right now. I'm not saying that any of the SEC teams are better, but playing SEC teams week in and week out makes it almost impossible to go undefeated. And I think that If either OSU or UM played an SEC schedule this year they would be a "one-loss-team"

this year's college crop is weak top to bottom. but hey, somebody's gotta win.

bring on the "pro sports are ruining college athletics" arguments...

JFreak said...

You heard it here first.

Biggest upset of the weekend will be Indiana over Michigan.

ToddPacker said...

OSU squeaks past Zook, Eh
UM squeaks by Ball State, Eh

All I'm sayin is that both the big-guns from the Big Ten this year would have a loss if they played a 2006 SEC schedule.

Zeke Fucks My Mom said...

LOL, yea, if a lion eats your ball. Would that be considered out of bounds? Where would the "play where it lies" rules stand on tar pits and venomous snakes? Would you get extra points shaved off for catching AIDs?

This could get interesting, like extreme golf or something.

Isiah Thomas said...

uh I'll take UM and OSU over any SEC team.

Isiah Thomas said...

and these are different from Tennessee being a 2 pt conversion away from an upset at the hands of MIGHTY Air Force????

plus UM had 500+ yds total offense, Ball State was....opportunistic.

Isiah Thomas said...

I get SEC fans are great and have a lot of passion. Good for you. That doesn't equate to elite teams.

Jfreak, if UM loses to IU I will off myself.

El Padrino said...

jfreak stop

no way

ToddPacker said...

Zeke

Hopefully we will get to see OSU/UM winner vs a one loss SEC team in the NC game. I don't think it will happen, OSU/UM winner will prob get to play UL.

I know that there is no real winning the "My conference is better than your conference" argument, but I just can't sit back and not stick up for the "All-Powerful-SEC"

Big Bad Tim Tebow would tear up the Big Ten

whocares said...

Zeke,

Of course you would take those two over any SEC team. You're a Big Ten fan.

And for one game, yes I would probably take OSU as well, but I guarantee they couldnt have played Florida's schedule and made it out undefeated. For UF to only have one loss is pretty damn impressive. Way more impressive than making it out of the Big East unbeaten.

I hear the rumblings of a bet...?

Isiah Thomas said...

not sure if these are new or new to the store I was in.....Red Bull in 12oz cans.

Isiah Thomas said...

Tim Tebow wouldn't last 2 quarters against UM.

The first time he comes around the edge.....PLA-DOW. Lamar Woodley ends his career.

i went to the UM/Ball State game and the UM game was called so crappy, it was unbelievable. i think the coaches deserve the blame for that game.

probably 80-85% of the calls were rushing plays to the left side. they just did it over and over and over. freaking worthless. they started the game as if they just wanted to run out the clock. but they forgot to actually get up and score some points first. freakin worthless!!

Isiah Thomas said...

I got nothing for you in CBB.

ToddPacker said...

No Tebow love.

Remember he's only a true Freshman.

I think he would hold his own against the big bad men in blue.

I would worry more about stopping Troy Smith.

El Padrino said...

Gators return the starting five that won them the title right?

interesting
wake me up in feb...

ToddPacker said...

yea EP, they only lost one senior, Adrian Moss (he wasn't even a starter)

It’s going to be tough for them to repeat. Last year might have gotten to their head a little bit. Noah is a full fledged legend in Gainesville. We'll see how Billy D handles it.

anonymous said...

FL/MI would be a solid game, dont lie to yourselves... i got love for the Blue, but im not blinded. UM's D is obviously stronger, but i think FL would make it a solid contest.

anonymous said...

and wake my ass in March. EP, i'll catch that extra month of zzzz's.

anonymous said...

random thought before i leave today... the Bears shouldve went after McNair this offseason. why pin your hopes on rex grossman? why the hades would u stick by Rex like he's proved something? get yourself a proven guy before your window closes.

El Padrino said...

yea, i can't get into it til then

a few games here or there

Isiah Thomas said...

UM traditionally struggles vs QB's who can run. But UM has nice linebackers and should be able to spy him effectively.

I think the biggest question mark for UM will be that WR Gonzalez. If he has a big day its all over for UM. Smith and Ginn will get theirs, but if Gonzalez gets his it will be a L for UM.

UM seriously, might kill Tebow.

Isiah Thomas said...

the big question I had for the CBB off-season was Noah's grill.

Did he get them teefis fixed? Those joints were crooked and as yellow as cheddar.

whocares said...

Yeah, UM would dominate Teabow. I mean, they've faced 6-4 250 lb running QB's plenty of times.

Spare me the Michigan garbage. For one year they do better than 8 wins, all of a sudden they're world beaters.

ToddPacker said...

"UM seriously, might kill Tebow."

That one made me chuckle, Zeke

Isiah Thomas said...

and FLA is rich in football tradition.......

Isiah Thomas said...

UM's front 7 is the best in the game. I would be afraid for Tebow's life if he tried to run for a full game against that D. And 100% chance he's not 6'5''.

ToddPacker said...

"Did he get them teefis fixed? Those joints were crooked and as yellow as cheddar."

Zeke

I think he had some kind of temporary teefs in for the tourney. He got them knocked out late in the reg season, i think by Balkman (dude the knicks drafted)

I would think that Yanik throw he some scratch in the off-season to get them fixed.

Isiah Thomas said...

it would impossible for Tebow to run with Woodley's nuts stuck in his throat.

Those ain't chin nuts Tim-may.

Isiah Thomas said...

ah, didn't know that TP.

Isiah Thomas said...

one last thing on Noah....he's part French.

That knocks you down, many...many...pegs in my book.

Just say no to the French.

whocares said...

"UM's front 7 is the best in the game."

Yeah, because they've shut down the potent rushing attacks of......ummmmm, hold on a second. Still checking the schedule..... still nothing. Ummmm, Notre Dame? What rushing offenses have they faced?

ToddPacker said...

Zeke

go easy. I never compared UF history to UM. I know that UM was winning titles back when they were playing with leather helmets, and that UF "eliteness" doesn't really start until 1990 (Arrival of Spurrier)

Remember Tebow doesn't play every down. He just a Freshman getting his feet wet. But he is a big bruising QB that will take his share of punishment, but he will also dole out some pain.

Like EP said before, Mr Tebow will be sporting the Heisman before his career is over.

That is unless UF should happen to play UM, in which case Tebow will be killed and no longer be eligible.

Isiah Thomas said...

they held Wisconsin, the 19th ranked rushing team in all the land to 12 yds rushing. Counts for something.

Isiah Thomas said...

and Leak is still pissing his pants throwing 3 picks vs Vandy? A 4 yr starter can't get off the mat for that game?

in the imortal words of Father Hate

::::DIP::::::::

ToddPacker said...

Don't get me wrong zeke, I'm rooting for UM to beat OSU. I hate the Luckeyes. and I kind of feel bad for Loyd Carr, he always seems lost to me.

I just checked UM stats against the run...pretty impressive. Only one team has gained 100 yards on the ground against them (Minn). I hope that D hold up against OSU

Isiah Thomas said...

"and I kind of feel bad for Loyd Carr, he always seems lost to me"

got a chuckle

ToddPacker said...

Leak was never in the conversation.
He is an OK QB. Hasn't really gotten better over his career. To his credit he has had three different O coordinators. Also, he never seems to play well, for whatever reason, against Vandy. He has however, played pretty good over his career against better teams like LSU, Tenn, FSU and UGA.

Isiah Thomas said...

This debate just shows that CFB is broke. I waffle on this but now I'm in the CFB needs a playoff - especially in seasons like this.

NCAA Football needs a playoff

Isiah Thomas said...

I'd say make it the BCS top 6 with the #1 and 2 seeds getting a 1st round bye.

Isiah Thomas said...

another thing that sucks about CFB's current set-up, the title game will be played at least a month after the final game of the regular season.

no mention of SP giving out bags of chips for halloween and the kid that called him out?

What kind of scumbag hands out bags of chips?
