look away, i'm hideous.

so this past weekend was Veteran's Day. Let's tie this into sports quickly... Pat Tillman was the lead story last week and it got me to thinking. i'm not trying to slander a dead guy, especially one who was fighting for our country (because even if you dont care for the exact fight theyre in, there's no reason to dog on our guys in service).

but the WWL had stories about whether there was a cover up, apparently it was friendly fire and all this.. yada yada it sounds like a mini-jfk episode. whodunit? so they think he was killed by someone in his own group (i believe).

so were the members of his squad Super Haters? did they kill him due to spite? did they try to shoot at him to really "show him". show him what? i dont know. maybe they didnt like big money football players, and they were jealous. seriously, the ultimate haterism right there. of all 'little football guys' to hate, you'd think that once Tillman showed up at training and went through all the stuff with the troops, they would see that he was serious about it. werent he and his brother trying to be like Rangers or something? i mean, he sure didnt seem like he was in it for a 3 month vacation, or just doing it for publicity.. so i dont really get the jealous angle. unless youre were simply more of a hater than Satan himself, i dont get why you would hate that much on someone.

although maybe he thought he was hot shit and his fellow soldiers thought he was getting special attention.. we'll never know. but just cause he looked like he was fighting for The Right Cause doesnt mean that he couldnt have been a total prick and that people didnt like him. im not saying that he was, cause obviously i never knew him whatsoever, but im just throwing all sides of the story out.

and this might be kinda rough to say, but the only reason any of us even know his name is because of him leaving the NFL to go to the army (and dying). i'd never heard of him before, and probably never would've. he wasnt an outstanding nfl player, he was basically a no name. but now AZ is gonna put up a bronze statue of him, and gonna list him in their "Ring of Honor", whatever that is, and have all this pomp and circumstance.

i dont know, im kinda on the fence here. it's seems kind of show-boaty to me. i mean, yes, give the guy his due.. but at the same time, there's thousands of soldiers that have died in previous wars and this war combined that have never received this treatment. just because he was a football player, and the teams have the ideas and funds to make things like this happen.. simply because of that, this one person was picked out to be the face of the "american hero".

seems like they should do more of a general memorial rather than like a statue of him and put his name on a wall. respect one, respect em all, ya know? not to be nitpicky, but the media loves to have one "face" to get people unified, and it seems like his death is being used that way.

tacky or not, it is.

--

other stuff... 1 vs 2, you can practically drink the hype. i'm sure espn will sell it by the 20oz can this weekend. anything to make a buck off of THE SINGLE GREATEST COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAME EVAR!!!11

Gradkowski is gonna be a solid QB, but damn if tampa bay doesnt just suck. too bad my (like 80 yr old) aunt has a Bucs tat. this aint the Warren Sapp teams anymore.

i could cover some other stuff, but i'm not gonna.
out.

There was a cover up, but they weren't trying to cover up WHY he was killed. He probably wouldn't have been killed if they didn't split up his platoon the way they had. What happened was he was killed and since he was a "celebrity", his death got a lot of attention. I'm pretty sure they knew he was killed by friendly fire, but it took the Army a month to reveal that to the public, and more importantly, his family. Not only that, but the citation written for him after his death contained a detailed report that said he was killed by enemy fire. In addition to that, his clothes and body armor were burned very soon after his death. Basically because Tillman was a celebrity, the Army handled it wrong not wanting any negative attention, and in doing so, they took on even more negative attention.

jugdish said...

As far as having a memorial goes, you can look at it in a few different ways. I understand that there are thousands of troops that have lost their lives over there and their sacrifices and contributions shouldn't be diminished in any way. During the World Wars it was common for a pro athlete to put his sports career on hold and go fight for his country, but that is not the case anymore. In fact, outside of Tillman, I can't think of any other pro athlete who has done the same thing, and I think the fact that he gave up the money to do that should be celebrated.

As far as the ring of honor for the Cardinals...I mean shit, they're the Cardinals. Who else are they going to put in the ring of honor? I'm surprised they don't put the player of the game in the ring every time they win one.

ebntx said...

"I'm surprised they don't put the player of the game in the ring every time they win one."

if they only do that when they win, it would still be an small, select group

1 v 2 is ridiculously hyped. Living in Columbus right now as a non buckeye fan sucks. All I see is pictures of Brutus punching the weasel. That sounds like some euphemism for wacking off, punching the weasel.

Anyway, I thought Tillman was a solid player back in the day. Not that is really matters. The way I look at it is at least they are honoring someone from this war and not just pretending it didn't happen.

Ring of honor for the Cards, isn't that what the Cowboys have? Shouldn't they have to think of an original name? Like the "Guys you may have heard of who liked playing for us club."

temwr said...

Today is going too slowly for a tuesday. It feels like wednesday. That always sucks.

The Rev said...

The government? Covering up an embarassment? You don't say!

One difference between Pat Tillman and the World War veteran athletes is that there was a draft during the World Wars. I'm sure many of the athletes volunteered for the Army before they could be drafted, but I'm also sure some of them had no choice. It was a different kind of decision then. If you didn't volunteer, you were at risk of getting taken anyway.

Today, no one has to go. The people who are over there all made a choice to go into the military. As a result, any athlete who makes a choice to give it all up and go over is going to be looked at as a real hero.

I don't think anyone shot him on purpose. I believe it was a tragic accident. That really makes it unnecessary to cover up. And the government should be ashamed that some things were covered up.

Actually, the government should be ashamed of so much more. But that's just one thing.

Isiah Thomas said...

People LOVE Pat Tillman around here. I agree his NFL status has given him more attention than other soldiers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and we whould never forget all of the others.

Tillman also played his college ball at ASU. He really is a legend around these parts. A lot of people are mad they didn't name the stadium after him or the field or something.

Also, I heard that the Cards fucked up the halftime dedication ceremony by not having a mic that worked and the whole stadium couldn't hear what was going on.

with that said
What age did Gradowski start losing his hair? Like 12. Isn't he a rook, and he went with the ball cue. And I know he went that way cuz he was balding.

The Rev said...

Total aside... we have a minor WTH here in Philly.

I heard some of this on the air a few days ago. Bernard was arguing big-time with the host on the air. From today's paper...

"A cheeky challenge is on between Howard Eskin of WIP (610) and boxing champ Bernard Hopkins. Hopkins dissed Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, and Eskin called Hopkins a "lapdog" for Eagles alumnus Terrell Owens. So Eskin and Hopkins on Friday decided to settle their differences like men: If Owens finishes his contract with the Cowboys and earns his $25 million, Eskin has agreed to kiss Hopkins' behind while standing at the Rocky statue. Should Owens fall short contractually, Hopkins will do the kissing on the 50-yard line at the Linc."

This is the most exciting thing in Philly sports right now. We have two guys, one a big time boxing champion, threatening to kiss each other's ass in public.

Don't you wish you lived here?

El Padrino said...

and iam, you should fucking know better. Anyone that dies in a blaze of glory or is well known (espeacially in sports) gets the red carpet death.

Martin VanNostrand said...

Good post Iam. I'm thinking like Rev that it was an accident but cover up was more of the accident since it was not enemy fire. Tillman should be recognized for his patriotism and service. Especially walking away from a few mil to do it. A bronze statue seems a bit much though.

If it was a staute of just the likeness of a soldier and maybe they have a plaque honoring all the GI's from AZ who died I would be cool with that. Even if they put it outside the stadium. At least it's the teams money doing it and not the State of AZ's cash. Can't complain about that issue.

So is Cuba Gooding Jr in the circle of honor?

Red Sox bid $42M to negotiate with this guy.

So now they get to negotiate with him and if they sign him for say 4 years $60M then they have to fork over the $42M to the Japanese club and then pay the dude his $60M

And if the negotiations fail and they do not sign the guy they are out $0?

Isiah Thomas said...

The Rev said...

FI they sign the Japanese guy, they have to pay the $42 million to the Seibu Lions (rumor is that it might even be $50 million now), then they have to pay the player whatever the contract is.

So if they sign him for say $60 million, the Sox are then in the hole $110 million total for him.

And I believe if they don't sign him, they are still out the $50 million. But I'm not 100% sure on that one.

Isiah Thomas said...

fyi

If the Lions accept the top bid, the winning bidder has 30 days to reach an agreement with Matsuzaka. If a deal cannot be reached, he would return to the Lions for the 2007 Japanese baseball season and the bid will not be paid.

The Rev said...

Well that definitely makes more sense.

If you had to pay the bid regardless, I'm sure the bid would have been much lower.

Also, if I worked at Subway and they tried calling me a sandwich artist I'd punch someone in the face.

He just tapped that guy. That guy is a big baby, that should not have hurt at all.

If Coach K did it the media would be blowing him for showing toughness and discipline. If Knight does it, then it is a physical assault against a player.

It was a love tap on the chin to get the guy to look up.

The Rev said...

"I don't get how you can be "for the troops" but "against the war". So you believe in your troops but not what they're doing?"

I'll tell you exactly how you can be this way.

If you believe that our government is putting the troops in harm's way for the wrong reasons and without proper protection, then you can very much be for the troops and against the war.

Our government is using our troops. That is nothing against the troops. They do what they are told to do. The blame lies with the people telling them what to do. They made the decision to go to war.

I worked at Subway when I was in college. I was a sandwich artist. But if I punched someone in the face, I would have been fired.

anonymous said...

i think it all comes down to "pick your battles". some people think the iraq war will help for the future (ie, saddam out of power) but that it really distracts from the original reason we went over there (catch bin laden).

so u can think that the cause is whack, but you still support the troops.

let me break it down sports-wise...

take your favorite team/player. let's say they get a new coach. you think, damn, they used to be better under the old coach, maybe we can get somebody new. i dont like the plays that this guy calls, and his clock management sucks.

your favorite player is still your fav, and you will always root for your team cause youre a fan. yeah you hate that they suck right now, but maybe one day theyll be back.

dont hate the player hate the game (or coach).

The Rev said...

"so rev, do you think the u.s. should let n korea tests their nukes and not be involved too?"

North Korea was always more of a threat. In fact, I think our government made a mistake not paying more attention to that threat before committing most of our resources to Iraq.

Another reason going full tilt into Iraq was a mistake. You're just proving my point.

I don't know if John Kerry would have been good. In fact, I am now more inclined to think that he was not the best candidate from the Dem side.

But I'll take him over Bush.

In fact, why don't we give a nice Tombstone analogy to Bush. I see GW as Ike Clanton. He's the guy who always talked tough from 20 feet away. But once Wyatt Earp got in his face, he cried like a bitch.

Remember this... Kerry actually fought in a war. Bush never saw combat, in fact he found a loophole to get himself out of it. Never forget that.

you deserved it kid.. dont act like you havent had worse in practice. dont rub your jaw cause the cameras are running.. you go to Knights team, you know what youre getting.

jugdish said...

Here is the deal with the "mess" over there. Of course its a mess. What did you expect? You remove a dictator (who is guilty of mass murder) government who controls all of what these people do and see and think, and you expect instant peace? That just doesn't happen, and how do you plan for that? I think they had a plan, but you can't plan for mass chaos like that. You have to deal with it and react.

The problem with a lot of people is they are too used to war movies that are done in 120 minutes and the good guys win. Real life doesn't work that way. After 9/11 everyone was up in arms and wanted something to be done, but they weren't prepared to deal with the consequences of doing it right.

I'll agree with the body armor issue, they need to get that shit over there and get it over there fast!

Big ups to all for putting rev in his place.

if Mccain/Guiliani don't run together I'll vote for the jugdish/whocares platform.

i think i may purchase an island and start a lov type lawless society. what do you guys think?

Martin VanNostrand said...

Zeke - if you tip him $5 mix it up. Next trip to the bank get 20 bones worth of $2 bills. Slip the the guy a couple folded deuces and a single in there. The 2 on the outside and multiple bills will confuse him until he gets back in the car and realizes you only gave him a 5 spot. This is a great move with valets and ushers.

The Rev said...

I don't get the logic, eh? Well, let's see...

" After 9/11 everyone was up in arms and wanted something to be done, but they weren't prepared to deal with the consequences of doing it right."

And that's exactly the problem. Invading Iraq was never the right thing to do in response to 9-11.

We're still not prepared to face the consequences of doing it right because we're not doing it right.

The man who orchestrated 9-11 is still free. How right is that?

Zeke Fucks My Mom said...

Anybody else imagine Rev curled up in the corner sucking his thumb rocking back and forth due to this thread's conversation?

El Padrino said...

go get iam

dems wont find a canidate that could beat either mc cain or rudolph so start agonizing over it now....although rudolph is like a dem on certain issues

he's pro gay rights
pro banning handguns
pro choice

and he lived with two gay men and a chihuahua

Martin VanNostrand said...

Anyone remember that broadcast of Rudy's acceptence speech with his kid all up on the podium with him waving at folks and copying Rudy's moves? That was some funny television.

Spaceman Spiff said...

i reapeat, jessica alba has been married and divorced. the guy obviously didnt make a tape tho, wonder if he even slept with her. damn him

The Rev said...

"Big ups to all for putting rev in his place."

And what exactly is "my place"?

I'll cool off the political stuff cause I think I stated my case enough. But if you keep that up, I'll write a comment here that will take you at least 10 minutes to read and maybe even 5 page scrolls.

You know I can do it. I will do it if I have to. Don't tempt me.

jugdish said...

The problem is that a country didn't attack us on 9-11, a terrorist organization did. Seeing that every bit of land on this planet seems to be in some kind of country, we had to start in one country at least. That was actually Afghanistan. We went into Iraq also because they had terrorist training camps there as well. Bush said if you harbor the terrorists you are as guilty as they are. We are still in Afghanistan too, just because you don't see it on the news doesn't mean it ain't happening.

Also...of the 52 most wanted, I believe most of those have been caught, as some of them who have taken their place. A lot of progress has been made, although Osama's capture would be the ultimate.

ebntx said...

yea, lets not tempt the rev, he is not db who tucked his tail under and ran. way to not back down rev.

anonymous said...

can someone explain what Giuliani actually DID in NY to make him "america's mayor"?

every time they talk about him they act like he dove into the rubble and led rescue efforts. what did he do to "bring everyone together"? im not slighting him, im trying to find out why he is supposed to be so endearing to the american public.

anonymous said...

it's not like he made the Knicks a winner again.

The Rev said...

The casualties are mostly in Iraq. You can't dispute that.

And if you don't think there are more terrorists operating in Iraq now than before, you're nuts. Being in Iraq has not stopped terrorism in that country.

And maybe we are capturing a lot of Al Qaida #2 and #3's, but they're easily replaced. We celebrate a killing of a #2 guy, and Al Qaida simply promotes someone new.

If we had gotten Bin Laden earlier, it might be a different story.

The Rev said...

Rudy was a decent mayor. I'll give that to him. And I agree with him on some key social issues.

But he was far from perfect. That guy has had some scandal in his past too.

He might be the Republican's version of Bill Clinton.

Isiah Thomas said...

good call Rev, if the Dems won they woulda waved their magic wand and made all the bad guys disappear.

If the Dems know where to get Osama why haven't they come forth with the info.

Bi-lateral talks to stop terrorism IS NOT THE ANSWER.

The Rev said...

I'll stop the political stuff if everyone else does.

Jay Scott said...

consider this: a country just had a revolution and is now a 'free' country, trying to form its own government. it sucks at it. there are a couple of rebellions, failed attempts at constitutions, and even civil war roughly 70 years later, because people still aren't getting along. sound familiar? it's not Iraq, it's the USA. Shay's rebellion, Articles of Confederation, the Civil War. remember those things?

we were told that this [Iraq] would be a long process, and it wouldn't be easy. why then are we suprised when even we didn't get it right with our own country for so long?

Isiah Thomas said...

Wasn't Clinton in office when Osama attacked the first time? So the ball dropping and dipping (Monica) started with him.

whocares said...

Sorry jug, "not-so-good" was a poor choice of words. And you're right, war is ugly and we are currently at war.

Rev, please tell us where we went wrong? If there was a place called "Terroristikstan" we would've gone there first. Guaranteed. But you see, terrorist are everywhere so we had to start by putting some type of face on there. And going in as country and overthrowing a government is tricky (I'm actually guessing here, as I have no military knowledge) but the Dems would have you believe that it should have been done in seventeen minutes.

And screw whoever got the political debate raging.

Isiah Thomas said...

cyber standing O to jay scott for dropping a Shay's rebellion reference.

jugdish said...

I thought Clinton had a plan and had a guy with his sights on Bin Laden at one point before he called it off...was that early enough?

Isiah Thomas said...

and you gotta love the Rev's threat of a 5 page post. You know he's started that bitch in word and is just waiting to copy/paste here.

whocares said...

well said jayscott.

If you read between the lines of jayscotts post, you could deduce that all democrats are un-American bastards. And that's what I shall do.

Isiah Thomas said...

maybe that was the guy on the other end of the phone when Bill was getting his jimmy wax from Monica

Bill : "go for it"
Sniper : "go for it sir?"
Bill : "oh yeah baby"
Sniper : "repeat go for it sir?"
Bill (startled that he forgot the mute button wasn't on) : "wait what are talking about"

The Rev said...

"If the Dems know where to get Osama why haven't they come forth with the info."

I never said that.

I don't know if the Dems would have done a better job. Even Bill Clinton admitted he tried and failed, but he did try.

But I do know the Republicans have done a horseshit job. That's all that matters to me.

Isiah Thomas said...

this is all part of Father Hate's plan.

Isiah Thomas said...

Rev you've been brainwashed by the "we have a new plan"-plan. yet there are no details to said plan.

ebntx said...

are the Panthers gonna make the comeback of the year? will randy moss be traded? (and which team did i say he was gonna go to?)

The Rev said...

I'm the first one to admit that Bill Clinton made mistakes in this too. He was far from perfect.

What bothers me is that conservatives are more likely to defend their guy who made mistakes at all costs. And anyone who challenges that is Un-American. If you guys called out your own leaders every now and then, I'd respect you more.

And for the record, anyone who thinks I am Un-American can kiss my rosy-red Philly sports lovin Reverend ass!

El Padrino said...

rudolph became america's mayor the minute those planes hit the towers

iam, what he did was show some resolve, some fortitude, working around the clock to ensure rescue efforts were swift, establishing a mobile emergency rescue efforts, demanding full federal help, both monetary and physical work (NG) and he got NY up and running again quicker than anyone thought...

just compare him to Ray Nagin and then maybe you'll understand... and yes i realize the gov bailed on Nagin but hell they knew the fucking hurricane was coming, Rudolph had no clue the hell that was about to happen

anonymous said...

and SCENE!

The Rev said...

Those will be my last words on it... unless someone else challenges me.

El Padrino said...

no steve smith puking in a garbage can jokes? i'm appalled.

anonymous said...

good call EP, i forgot about what that db Nagin did (or didnt do). just compare, that's a good point.

jugdish said...

That's what I don't understand, you throw words out there like they've done a horeshit job, but provide one liners to back it up. "they didn't find bin laden", "They invaded the wrong country"...what is this, the Jon Stewert Show?

I mean we've already established the pretty much well known fact that you can't remove a dictatorship, mop up, and be home for dinner. I'm curious to know what you really did expect.

anonymous said...

we need one of em to get traded so we can have a McNabb to S.Smith touchdown pass special.

a little vomit never hurt anyone.

jugdish said...

OK, I'm done too...

but Nagin...he is an idiot!

OK...now I'm really done.

The Rev said...

Maybe removing the dictatorship should not have been our first priority in the first place.

We've left dictatorships in place before and held them in check. What made Iraq so special?

And if you give me that Iraq was harboring terrorists, then tell me why we are not invading Saudi Arabia too?

Oh, they're the dictatorship that is actually friends with George Bush's family.

Now I see the difference. We only go after dictators that won't give our family business interests.

Isiah Thomas said...

challenges you? we're still waiting for a valid pt from you.

Alright I'm done, seriously.

Isiah Thomas said...

iam you had Moss going to NYC to complete the Manning Bowl.

as far as the OSU/UM game.. bo schembechler(?) was fired up this past week. apparently the last time UM went to OSU they delayed the team before the game and brought in bomb sniffing dogs and screened their baggage and stuff..

so come to find out that no other team had to do that. OSU said otherwise. Bo is now fired up this week giving OSU a strong, hearty, "why i oughta..." and a stern fist shake. i think he threatened to have another heart attack if they mess with UM again.

good call buddy, go take your meds and go back to sleep.

Dude just had another heart attack/problem and had a pace maker/defebrilator put in.

This is AFTER he's had TWO quadruple bypass surgery. Not uno, but dos.

Maybe after the first one you change up your lifestyle and stop washing down the double burger with a lard milkshake.

at this point Bo is basically farting dust so there's no need to kid himself. He should have a constant supply of onion rings around him 24/7.

If the paper ain't see through from grease Bo don't eat it.

Rev, the reason im so apathetic about politics is that its always the pot calling the kettle black.

yes Bushie probably has business ties to oil people and yes there's probably something in it for you too. however, you drive, and you need gas, so we need the government to keep working with those companies.

but Dems have the same stuff going too. if they get control, then theyll go to "their sources", and so on.

so there's dirt on both sides, and youre really picking the lesser of 2 evils if youre basing your vote on "who is ____ in cahoots with?"

everybody's f*cking everybody. we see this reflected in everyday american business. you scratch mine, i'll scratch yours. everybody is into it, so youre only choosing the lesser of 2 evils.

either way, theyre all in it for themselves, no matter which campaign logo they wear on their Oxford polo shirt.

I blame the democratic mouthpiece that is CNN for a lot of the problems.
