El Padrino's Weekly Betting Column

Good Friday.

So as you all may already know, me and three of my homeslice's are going to Green Bay this weekend for the second annual "32 Stadiums" Tour. Last year we hit up ATL, fo sho.
The Patriots will be in town so it should be either a good game or since they lost two in a row it could get ugly. We'll see. I just wanted to see Farve in the cold, at Lambeau before I died.
My time is now. I will definitely post about my experience, perhaps on Tuesday if that's ok with IAM (you can take my Friday spot that week if you want and I'll just post picks w/o analysis, up to you) and might have some pics to share as well.

Onto some sports news:

Why cover Slaton with a safety? Guy runs like a 4.2 flat.

We'll miss you George

Obviously the biggest story is the Mich-OState game tomorrow. I really think Michigan is going to win. Could be cuz that's the team I root for but if you look at the skill positions I think Michigan has the upper hand. Henne has to mistake free and the front four has to get pressure without the blitz, something they have done all year. Go Blue.

Another huge match up is the Pac-10 tilt between Southern Cal and Cal. With last weekend upsets all over, Carroll has his team believing that they can go the the national title game for the third year in a row.

Mavs -4 tonight over the stumbling Grizz..... Lock it up!

College Picks

Michigan (+7) over O.STATE
Any close Big Ten game you go with the points. And yes this is breaking my rules about betting on teams you root for but Michigan's D is so nasty that I have no choice. Henne will be key and I have a felling he'll make some great plays with his arm. ($50)

USC (-5.5) over Cal
Yup. I've been riding Cal all year. Even said at one point that they could beat USC. But now with what transpired last week (upsets all over) and Pete Carrol pushing the "control your own destiny" bit. USC is now super-motivated to win out and make the BCS NT game for the third year in a row. ($50)

Kansas St. (-2) over KANSAS
Big 12 action! I can't see K.State losing this game, espeacially coming off a big win vs. Texas. ($25)

Pros Picks

PACKERS (+6) over Patriots
Unless I'm traveling to a stadium to see the Giants play, I root for the home team. Might as well throw $50 on the game too, make it more exciting. I'm going to be real drunk.($50)

Steelers (-3) over BROWNS
This game might start out slow for the Steelers but eventually they will end up winning this game because they absolutely have to. Falcons should be ashamed of themselves. ($50)

Redskins (+1) over TAMPA BAY
Someone said this in yesterday's comments.....I think this is accurate, not looking it up but Ronde Barber is second on the team in TD's. Couple that with the Redskins having a habit of winning games when the chips are against them and you'll be ($50) richer.

Colts (-1) over COWBOYS
Listen folks, the Eagles and the Jags are the only two teams who now have a shot at beating the Colts. The cowboys don't. ($50)

St Loo @ Carolina (OVER 44)
Bulger to Holt, Delhomme to Smith. Neither can be stopped. Neither will. ($50)

Just Teasing

Colts +11
Bengals +15
St.Loo +19
Pack +18
($100)

A rough 46-49-1 after last weekend's debacle but the forecast for this weekend is sunny and bright. Bet on.

Yes Ronde is second on the team with 2 TDs...not counting QB throwing TDs.

Galloway has 4. Ronde has 2.

A woman married three times walked into a bridal shop one day and
told the sales clerk that she was looking for a wedding gown for her
fourth wedding.

"Of course, madam," replied the sales clerk, "exactly what type and
color dress are you looking for?"

The bride to be said: "A long frilly white dress with a veil." The
sales
clerk hesitated a bit, then said, "Please don't take this the wrong
way, but gowns of that nature are considered more appropriate for
brides who are being married the first time - for those who are a bit
more innocent, if you know what I mean? Perhaps ivory or sky blue would
be nice?"

"Well," replied the customer, a little peeved at the clerk's
directness,
"I can assure you that a white gown would be quite appropriate.
Believe it or not, despite all my marriages, I remain as innocent as
any first-time bride.

You see, my first husband was so excited about our wedding, he died
as we were checking into our hotel.

My second husband and I got into such a terrible fight in the Limo on
our way to our honeymoon that we had that wedding annulled
Immediately and never spoke to each other again."

"What about your third husband?" asked the sales clerk.

"That one was a Democrat," said the woman, "and every night for four
years, he just sat on the edge of the bed and told me how good it was
going to be.

If someone is laying out a Heismann ballot and does not put either Pat White or Steve Slaton on it, I just might have to hunt them down and cut off one of their arms. I'm not saying that they should be number 1 on the ballot, but really one of them should be number 2 at worst.

Wow, EP did you watch the Sports Machine? Growing up in the DC Area I watched Channel 4 (NBC) where Michaels was the sportscaster. Didn't really watch the Sports Machine too much though.

Humorous note about that Titans game I attended. It was their first year in the new staduim so there was lots of hoopla and free junk. Ownership was giving out these signs that read "Go Titans" but most of the fans would fold it so the 'a' and the 'n' were hidden and it read "Go Tits". I'm sure that promotion only lasted a game or two.

ToddPacker said...

not to sound like a DB, but stadium/arena list is too long to think about so I'll just list some highlights....

The Weather Channel's Weekend Green Bay forecast (done in my best radio voice)

It's currently 37 degrees and mostly cloudy in Green Bay. Winds are light at around 5 miles per hour.

Tomorrow, a few scattered showers may move through the area, otherwise it will be cloudy with a high of 44 degrees. Lows at night will dip down below the freezing mark to 29 degrees.

For the game on Sunday, it should be a nice day for you Packer fans with partly sunny skies with just a slight breeze and 43 degrees.

Dude... I once went to a Patriots Bengals game in old Foxboro Stadium in December with temps in the teens and I had a rotten cold with a fever. I'm crazy like that.

For the record, the score of that game that day... Patriots 7, Bengals 2.

And the Bengals got their safety wehn Parcells decided to take a safety with the punter backed up to the goal post toward the end of the game so he could have 20 free yards to kick.

On the plus side, I got to see big time first round picks for the Bengals like Big Daddy Wilknson and David Klingler that day.

And in return for seeing stellar football, I got to spend the next three days hacking up my lung.

ToddPacker said...

Currently I'm more anxious than anything. Although I'm hoping a red-eye back east to see my peoples who I haven't seen in a year. Combo of that and game hype.

I still like Michigan to win outright. To me, them getting 7 is gold. The matchup to me at worst is even and homefield ain't worth 7.

"college cheerleaders aren't as hot as they used to be"

True dat. I got to re-live college in some form between 02-04. I had been out a few years and then my wifey went to grad school at Vanderbilt. I was able to get a student/family id so i could hit the games. They had a decent hoops squad those years and made the sweet 16 in there. Got to see them drop KY, FL and AL when the tide was #1. The student section is great seating there too.

Anyway, the cheerleaders seemed to have dropped from a 9 average to a 7 for the most part. You get a good representation from the pool when you attend most home games. It wasn't limited to the SEC either. IU and Michigan where in there as non conference foes. I have no proof but I think cheerleader status may have dropped across the country. With the clothing industry dropping waistlines and raising hem lines the super hot chicks know they can look just as smokin' in the stands and a cheerleader outfit won't make them any hotter. Look at that Cowgirl chick from FSU. She was just a hottie in the stands who got some air time and then offers from Maxium start rolling in.

Martin VanNostrand said...

"what's the deal with the benches at vandy's bb games"

It is strange to have them under the hoops. Only reason I can think of is so they don't obstruct fan views from the side lines. I think the seating is level at the base lines but from the side the first row is about chest level with the court. Good place to catch a game in person. Memorial is an interesting place. The seating is more squared off and not a continuious circle around the floor. That design may have something to do with it but it has terrible sound for concerts.

Isiah Thomas said...

Michigan would have to play the worst game of their lives to lose by more than a touchdown.

100% chance OSU does a moment of silence before kickoff...100%

And I am now changing my pick from OSU by 17 to OSU by 10. Bo mo (momemtum) is worth 7 to UM.

OSU will still dominate though. UM front 4 can't take down Smith and the UM back 7 can't cover /Ginn/Gonzalez/Robiskie.

Over under on Brent saying "game of the century" is about 7 words.

He will either say "welcome folks, to the game of the century." or welcome folks, to what many people are calling the game of the century."

temwr said...

and 100% chance that the moment of silence fails and some dickwads boo during it.

Isiah Thomas said...

tem you've brought a lot to the table this week so I'll ignore the absurdity of this :

OSU will still dominate though. UM front 4 can't take down Smith and the UM back 7 can't cover /Ginn/Gonzalez/Robiskie.

I'll up my prediction from UM by 17 to UM by 24. UM 34 OSU 10. No garbage time TD for OSU.

Homefield is out the window now.

Isiah Thomas said...

I won't lie, the first thought I had after hearing of Bo's passing and being extremely sad was:

OSU won't know what hit them. You know the last thing UM will hear before leaving the locker room is something about Bo.

IF OSU survives the first 5 minutes it will be a close game, otherwise UM will completely destroy them.

Isiah Thomas said...

Michigan has at least 3 first round picks on that D-Line.

Isiah Thomas said...

and Tressel is a smart cat, I don't think the last thing he wants right before game time is a moment of silence for Bo to further rile up the Blue. He's too smart for that.

temwr said...

At the pep rally / fund raiser for humane society that tressel and the players and what nots were at today when they found at the news about Bo they immediately stopped and said a prayer for Bo and had a moment of silence.

Say what you want about Tressel but the man is class act all the way, 100% chance there will be a moment of silence for Bo.

All of the above is serious. The rest is just to get zeke riled up.

Now, UM should have some first round picks on the line, since they had 0 total last year. I guess they are due. But still, OSU can max protect and Ginn and Gonzalez will have a field day. Plus Smith is not some crapjob from Michigan State, nor is me Mrs. Dr. Brady Quinn. He will scramble for about 70 yards + on that defense and break their backs.

anonymous said...

tem, this is it.. you nailed it.

"welcome folks, to what many people are calling the game of the century."

i would bet money on that. word for word.

Isiah Thomas said...

Tem I'm gonna stop arguing. Its a bitter rivalry. The only thing we agree on is that we both think our teams will win. I wish OSU good luck. I wish for a good game. I wish for Bo to RIP. I wish for a UM victory.

Spouting off stats, opinions and the like now are pointless and meaningless. Let them play the game.

If OSU blows UM's doors off I'll admit I'm full of shit.

Isiah Thomas said...

please tell me Musberger is just doing the pregame.

"WVU is a darkhorse to get to the title game. If SC loses to Cal, then SC beats ND, then the SEC teams take each other out they're right back in it, if they beat Rutgers."

if all of that happens, then the loser of the osu/um gets a rematch....unless it'e a huge blowout

jugdish said...

Did anyone ever think they'd hear the words "...fi they beat Rutgers" this late in the college football season and think it would mean anything?

temwr said...

I agree with the WVU darkhorse thing. Especially if UM beats OSU. If UM wins then I doubt there will be a rematch. If UM wins OSU will fall to like 7 or 8 or maybe farther in the computer polls and it will be just far enough to give whoever else is up there the edge over them.

Although, I seriously doubt that all of that will happen to get WVU to the title game.

If OSU wins I can see a rematch in the title game(read:I wouldn't be shocked to see it), especially if it is close, but I wouldn't really predict that to happen.

Tem - I didn't see the game last night but on the highlights that WV player CRUSHED those two Pitt players with that block on the punt return TD. That play should be immortalizied in commercials and promo footage.

"You may won this battle baby,

That was from Cross Canadian Ragweed on KLOV! Not exactly Texas country since they're from OK, but it'll do!

that block was unreal...i can't believe that dude took it to the house on that eturn...entertaining game last night

jugdish said...

Someone has to pick up the slack since Wes Meiz has to work. Although I'm completly sober.

El Padrino said...

it was a good game, pitt hung around pretty good, just didnt have their second half legs

that and they are coached by a bafoon

El Padrino said...

buffon?

Martin VanNostrand said...

TP - yeah that return was insane. The sick thing about the block was the WV player stayed on his feet and the Pitt players were just leveled.

ToddPacker said...

Wannstedt is a knucklehead...he'll be coaching HS games before his career is over

temwr said...

As a WVU fan I even have to say that was one of the best blocks I have ever seen. It was A+++ material. The rest of the return was sickening because the WVU tackling was atrocious. Especially that last guy who just dove out of bounds. I'll give the punter a pass for not making the tackle. He slowed the guy up and did his job, the rest of the dudes sucked ass.

That block though, that was awesome. Herbstreit said it best "just mark this play down for an ESPY nomination."

Martin VanNostrand said...

Buffoon - per spell check.

temwr said...

MV got that mixed around, the Pitt guy stayed up and the WVU guys got laid out...All the props in the world to that Pitt block.

But I still hate Pitt.

temwr said...

So I am guessing that of the bets placed on the OSU Michigan game in the last 3 hours that at least 90% of them have been for Michigan to cover the spread.

So, how could CFB's new "Randy Moss Award" have completely flown under our radar?

It was Pitt that ran it back? I thought it was the other way around. Sometimes you miss the details watching sports center with a 2 years old jumping on your back.

Ark will lose to LSU and beat FLA. Knocking Ark and FLA out with 2 losses.

ToddPacker said...

the gators will beat Ark in the sec championship game....i'm worried more about FSU in Tall. thanksgiving weekend

El Padrino said...

yeah, WVU still in it then zeke
i betcha Cal is kicking themselves for the week 1 loss to TEN

temwr said...

I thought the Randy Moss award was a joke? That is real???

El Padrino said...

tp, did i hear that Jarvis Moss got suspended or something?
wasn't he the one who blocked two kicks?

temwr said...

USC, FL, and ARK are in the drivers seats here. If they keep winning (I realize FL/ARK play each other so all 3 can't keep winning) they are in the NT game.

El Padrino said...

meiz, should i rock my Woodson Michigan jersey to Wizzy?

ToddPacker said...

yea, EP. moss blocked two kicks and then he gets suspended for this weeks game...meyer isn't saying why...sounds like something minor...he said he would be back on the field in two weeks for the FSU game is he got his crap together.

anonymous said...

isnt it stupid for OSU to be #1 all season, lose one game, and automatically make them drop to like 7 or 8? i understand what tem said about the computer polls doing that, but overall, they really are probably a number 2 seed.

ToddPacker said...

i totally agree IAM...one more argument for playoffs

jugdish said...

If OSU beats UM, technically why should UM drop at all...number 1 is supposed to beat number 2 right? That's why they are ranked that way.

ToddPacker said...

for those people that do not want a playoff, this weekends game is a pretty good argument against it...if we had a playoff, the hype for this game would be much lower...both teams would be a lock for the playoffs and it would be just a match up for playoff seedings...

My list is rather short

RCA Dome

one thing on the recent string of celeb deaths...

you don't lose your life.

You lose a battle with cancer.
You die.
You pass away.
You get kilt.

You lose a cell phone. You lose car keys. You lose a game.

You don't lose your own life.

This drives me crazy.

RE: Rankings

yeah the game would mean less nationaly, but the rivalry would still be there. plus depending on how far the loser dropped they could be playing to see who would play rutgers 1st round and who would play florida. that would be a pretty big deal.

oh and there's the little thing called the big 10 title on the line

Spaceman Spiff said...

too bad he cant watch now

ToddPacker said...

the game reminds me alot of the UF/FSU game in 1996...the schools were 1 and 2, last reg season game (UF had to play the SEC champ)...UF lost a close game to FSU, dropped to like 4th, but things worked out and the 2 and 3 teams lost before the bowls and UF got the rematch...i think if the game is close this weekend, things will work out and there will be a rematch

Just catching up. I had a business meeting over lunch to go to.

I saw the Bo thing at the restaurant on the TV. That's a big "DAMN" moment if there ever was one.

I don't know who will win OSU and Mich now. OSU's home advantage vs. Mich's emotional advantage pretty much cancel each other out. I have this feeling it will be decided on a late field goal either way.

I forgot to add Montreal Olympic Stadium to my list. I did see a game there. But it is the most forgettable stadium I have ever been to. It made the old Vet look like the Borgata.

As far as next week goes, I have a guest column in the hole from Martin. We can roll that out next week on one day. I'm not expecting a ton of comments next week due to the holiday week. But you never know.

RE: Rankings

If I had a vote and OSU beat UM in a close one I would vote OSU #1 UM #2. If it was a blowout UM would fall to the bottom of the other 1 loss / 0 loss pile.

If UM beats OSU in a close one I drop OSU below 0 loss Rutgers and to the middle of the 1 loss pack, probably ahead of WVU, behind USC, ahead of ND, behind FL and Ark (knowing that FL and Ark loser is dropping below them the next go round), and ahead of Wisc.

If UM blows out OSU I drop OSU to the bottom of the 1 loss pile.

Does friday mailbag SG get a running diary? I say no, the mailbags are mostly other people writing (the questions) and are usually a good read.

El Padrino said...

simmons, mailbag
it's aiight...

temwr said...

I mean mostly other people giving him the topics (I realize the majority of the words are his, but the topics aren't) if left on his own it would be celtics/pats/sox/swingers/godfather all day.

The Rev said...

I agree Tem. Mailbags are better. They don't need running diaries.

I think your diaries are better with regular columns. That gives you more stuff to make fun of.

temwr said...

OK good, the no running diary motion carries and I will proceed to read the mailbag.

temwr said...

Fuck figures, 1st question is about the sox...I guess even in the mailbags he can't mix it up.

ToddPacker said...

i agree no TEM RD in the LOV on the SG MB...too many abbreviations?

Re: Chuck Woodson jersey.

I suppose you could wear it. I'm sure you'll find that a lot of Packer fans are buffoons. My old man is naturally huge Pack fan yet, I know infinitely more about the team. Folks might not even know what the jersey's all about. Lots of Zubaz pants and cheap imitation jerseys will be abound. If you could wear a 1996 Super Bowl Champs shirt or something like that, you'd be set. Packer fans really hang on to that one bit of glory from ten freaking years ago. The one thing I like about cold games at Lambeau(really cold games) is when everybody is wearing their blaze orange. I think that's pimp shit.
