Wordswordswords...

They can't explain. Tigers go from absolutely nobody caring, to everyone in their corner. Good calls by all the "analysts". You guys prove every single year that you really, truly, know your shit. Thanks for calling a Yanks-vs-whoever Series. (And here's a great read from the WWL)

This city is on fyyyyyre. And finally it's not from someone setting it in a car. It's emotional.

Anyways, not gonna write too much now cause I gotta hit the phones and internet to try to land tickets, cause I'm goin. Oh yes, I will be there. Guarantee it. I'll be standing outside at the very least.

Mets-Cards.... A dog fight. NY represented last night and showed that this should be a long series. The question is, who wants to lose to Detroit the most?

They should just suspend both U of Miami and Florida International for the rest of the season. Both schools. Get that shit out of sports. That was so intensely ghetto it wasnt even funny. Was that gang initiation time or what? I also loved the Miami player running at a FL player when his back was completely turned, then he ran right back to his crowd of teammates. Classy. And ballsy. This proves that UM has definitely not changed the type of person/player that it recruits. They basically hang out a juvey and see if any of the kids are athletic.

And there were some good games yesterday (from looking at the scores), but my ass sure didn't watch any of em... I was out with the masses scooping up Tigers memorabilia.

Ok, maybe I'll update later, but for now let's jump start the Monday..

"That's what i'm talkin about!"

I personally enjoyed watching the Miami player try to bash the FIU player's skull with the old "over the top helmet swing." Ummm, I dont know about you guys, but if I'm in a fight on the football field, the helmet is going on my head.

like Staind said, it's been awhile.

Great NFL action yesterday
7 games decided by 3 or less, 3 winless teams get huge V's and
the Giants out-rushed the Falcons which is pretty hard to do.

Oh and thanks to the Broncos for fixing last nights game, it was so obvious they should be arrested

ToddPacker said...

Cograts to the the Tigers.

I'm glad to see the Mets bats came to life in game 4, hopefully they keep pouring on the runs and we get a NY/DET series.

Tough loss for the Gators. The D played great didn't give up any TDs, only FGs. I don't agree with the SEC over-rated stuff, just because they keep knocking each other off. In a playoff system no one would want to play LSU, Auburn, Tenn, or UF.

I was away all weekend, but did anyone else hear about Steve Lyons getting fired for on air remarks? What did he say?

El Padrino said...

that fight was straight out of Bumfights 2 or some other ghetto fight bootleg dvd

i still say mets in 6.

The Rev said...

Steve Lyons was fired for making a racially insensitive remark about Hispanics while in the booth. He was making jokes about a couple of things Lou Pinella had said. The transcripts of his remarks are out there online. I don't have the link right now, but I am sure someone knows where they are.

The remarks were a little hinky. But really, for me it is not so much thqat the remarks were insensitive. When I heard about them, I didn't even think they were funny. He was trying to be funny, and it didn't work.

I think Steve Lyons got fired more for sucking. This was just the last straw.

On top of that, him and Thom Brennaman also made fun of a legally blind fan on the air a couple of weeks back. They had to apologize during the game once they realized what they did.

Lyons ain't the brightest bulb in the scoreboard.

The Rev said...

Steve Lyons news item from ABC

Isiah Thomas said...

the whole Lyons thing is a crock. I read some quotes at the WWL and this is PC gone too far. Maybe he sucks as an announcer but to fire him for that is awful.

America is wayyyyy too PC.

And if Pinella finds a wallet and doesn't return it, isn't what Lyons said basically true?

ToddPacker said...

El P

I had a chance to go to game 4 and 5 in St Loo. Free flight, but lots of cash for tix and hotel though, so I passed. Watching the end of the game last night, seeing a bunch of met fans celebrate at busch, I wish I would have got off my wallet, spent the cash and gone.

We need Glavine to pitch another gem tonight.

Rev,

It sounds like a bunch of BS with Lyons, but you're right about him sucking, that's reason enough to get rid of him.

Isiah Thomas said...

I was listening to M&M this morning - talking about the Miami brawl. I guess I'm in the minority in this one. I heard "suspend them for the season", "disgrace", "revoke scholarships"......whaaaa?

I think Golic especially starts to take a stance then waits to see if Greenberg backs him up, then he goes off the deep end. They had Salisbury chime in also. I just don't get it.

ToddPacker said...

(Earlier in the playoffs, while working the Mets-Dodgers NLDS, Lyons unwittingly made fun of a nearly blind fan who was wearing special glasses to see the game.

"He's got a digital camera stuck to his face," Lyons said.)

That's pretty funny.

Isiah Thomas said...

they had a news story here a few months ago about special camera glasses that would help a blind guy drive.

WTF?

And the story said that the glasses didn't allow for 100% vision but I guess enough to drive.

WTF?

As for Lyons comment. If you were at the game, sitting far away and saw that you'd prob say something similar. That's kinda funny in my book.

ToddPacker said...

Wouldn't be great if a network like HBO or something, would air games with un-PC and R-rated announcers. Just regular guys talking like regular guys, dropping f-bombs and making fun of stuff you're not supposed to make fun of. I would pay for something like that.

Isiah Thomas said...

exactly TP. That's what I don't get.

People want to act all high and mighty and act like shit like this doesn't get said on a daily basis by the majority of society?

Then when it happens on the air its armageddon.

Don't get it.

El Padrino said...

you shoulda went TP, stop being frugal--it's not every day the mets are playing for the penant

Lyons was awful anyway so who cares
but to get fired off that, bad, real bad.

temwr said...

RE: Lyons
Is that worse than what Harold Reynolds got fired for? Or did it turn out the Harold was real bad into the sexual harrassment stuff?

RE: UM brawl
That Miami player who used his helmet barely swung that thing. He should have been able to do some damage with that thing, but he swung it like a girl. There was some good fighting going on there, but the helmet swinger was not part of it. Coker and JL Smith will be switching jobs next year.

Isiah Thomas said...

Isiah Thomas said...

I was following the game online Spiff. There were around 15 rushes from someone other than Portis - and only 2 or so from Betts.

Moss, Randle El, etc came up in the rushing box score way too much.

They can't water the playbook down and put Campbell in?

Also Salava'e and Griffin were out yesterday from that D-Line. Skins D is awful so far.

Don't you need at least one safety who can cover? Archuletta and Taylor are the same player.

But you don't need to make dumb jokes about Hispanics to be a sports announcer. Someone needs to tell that to Lyons. It's not so much offensive to me as it is completely unnecessary. And it wasn't even funny. When in doubt, just stay away from it.

Side note... Steve Lyons once spoke to my Sports Reporting class at Emerson College in Boston in 1994. (Yes, I actually took a class called Sports Reporting.) He was a cool guy. But he did strike me as a little off center.

Let's just say that this doesn't surprise me.

It was disgusting and it cost me at least 400 crispy chicken nuggets.

Isiah Thomas said...

Denver didn't even try to score in the 2nd half. I think they fumbled the opening kickoff or 1st punt in the second half too. The Denver returner had a nice return set up, he was at midfield no one too close and ooops the ball pops out and 3 of his teammates who it falls to can't grab it.

Isiah Thomas said...

Duke Vitale calling a Duke game : "Look at JJ's pants buldge bayyyyy-beeeeee"

The Rev said...

Maybe I would agree with you guys on the point shaving thing, but there's two key elements at work here...

1. Coming into the game, the Broncos were already one of the lowest scoring teams in the NFL.

2. Jake Plummer is their QB.

It's entirely feasible for the Denver offense to simply go inept for a half.

It's even more feasible that Shanahan doesn't totally trust Plummer with any big plays with the lead right now, yet he stays with him only because Jay Cutler needs more time to learn the system.

So he puts the wraps on the offense in the second half and wins it with D. That's just how Denver rolls.

The point about Shanny and Davis is making me rethink my stance that the game was not thrown.

El Padrino said...

pinella said close to home, isnt the cubs Spring Training in AZ?

lying yankee reject

i hate everyone today

Isiah Thomas said...

Ken Macha out as A's mgr. Thanks for coming out Ken.

Macha FIRED

El Padrino said...

i hate the word arse

and really
al davis at this point should not be on camera

him and lou holtz should both die already

ToddPacker said...

Dickie V lives in Sarasota, not Orlando.

I guess I'm in the minority on this one but I think Vitale is good for NCAA hoops. He is annoying and his act is old and tired, but it's hard to find someone with more college BB knowledge.

He definately has a couple of "favorites" like Duke, but if you happen to watch one of his games when someone upsets Duke, he gets just as excited for the team beating Duke. He is just pumped (maybe a little too pumped)to be involved in college ball.

ToddPacker said...

I agree EP, the world would be a better place with Holtz in the box

The Rev said...

Rubbing it in Davis' face... a little overrated.

I mean, if you start thinking like that and go aggressive, pretty soon Jake Plummer is throwing an interception right into the Raiders hands and giving them potential easy scores in the second half. And then Davis would have reason to gloat.

Believe me, I'm sure pinning Al with his 5th straight loss is rubbing it in plenty.

Isiah Thomas said...

Duke Vitale gets fired up when someone beats Duke then once the camera is off he sobs uncontrollably.

El Padrino said...

i cant believe your defending the Raiders, i mean the Ravens demplished them and the broncos pretty much manhandled the Ravens so what does that say.

You would swear rev thinks the Raiders are winning more than 2 games this year.

El Padrino said...

even a meidocre team smashes the Raiders by 3 TD's

let alone a team with the #2 or #3 Defense in the league.

The Rev said...

When did I defend the Raiders?

Every post I have made was more about Plummer sucking. Not once did I defend the Raiders.

I just know that if any QB is capable of handing a game over to the Raiders it's Jake Plummer.

I think the Raiders will win one game this season. I'm convinced no team will ever go 0-16 in this NFL. I'm not sure who they will beat. But they'll beat someone.

El Padrino said...

it was fixed.

no one can convince me otherwise
like i said, they didn't even try to score, not even a FG. Don't you understand? Not even a FG?

Cmon, open your eyes. I don't care if Ken O'Brien was the QB. If he makes a mistake you have the #2 or 3 or whatever defense in the league. Plus throw in Art Shell, i mean christ, a dirty diaper can out think that man.

Stiggy said...

I can't believe the Cubs are going to have Lou Piniella is going to be their next manager. I don't think it's the right fit for the team. Then again, it doesn't really matter because the team in general plain sucks ass.

whocares said...

Shanahan doesnt strike me as a guy who would shave points. Does he need the money?

Spaceman Spiff said...

san francisco beat the raiders by 2 td's, its not that hard. shannahan cleaned up on sunday, the over/under on his winnings is a couple mil.

Isiah Thomas said...

He needs the money for so he can go to more tanning booths.

ToddPacker said...

Ken O'Brien

ouch...just hearing that name is like someone kicking me in the ass

The Rev said...

He also needs to get his eyes widened.

The Rev said...

Lou Pinella = Overrated!

ToddPacker said...

Rev

Sweet Lou sports a pretty enormous head. I thought you of all people might be a fan of his.

El Padrino said...

Shanahan=devil

anonymous said...

lou pinella was totally lost on what a G.E.D degree was.

if youre sitting there like "well i dont know either", then youre a dummie as well.

and EP, how much $$$ did the Broncos lose you?

temwr said...

Has the Arizona state coach come out and explained his punt at the end of that game? I think I read that he said 4th and 30 was harder than punting and getting a turnover, was that his real answer? Punting to let the other team kneel has a better chance of winning than going for it? Especially when if you go for it you still get that small turnover chance...

ToddPacker said...

I think the ASU coach was in need of a GED after that line of thinking.

El Padrino said...

I was up $450 on a nice Parlay with the Steelers/Over & Chargers/Over so I'm like this is magic let me put a $250 reverse on Denver and the under which brings back 4-1 if you hit both. ($1000)

so with that said the fixed Raiders game, so Shanahan's third generation grandson could drive a gulfstream IV at the age of 11, cost me $1250 ($1000 winnings +$250 loss I took on the rverse)

BLAH!!!!!!

THE CHAMP. said...

that ASU coach is insane.

i couldn't believe they punted. i thought they were going to fake it.

why not throw it deep and let it be intercepted at least.

that guy will join coker and smith on the sidelines....maybe they can all coach the raiders together.

whocares said...

Somebody should have explained the new clock rules to him BEFORE that game.

"Wait, what? I have to take a timeout BEFORE they even snap the ball? Ummmm, maybe we shouldnt have punted right there."

Spaceman Spiff said...

ive never done a reverse how does it work

temwr said...

A reverse is like an end around.

Seriously though, everyone has noticed that every announcer team makes a point to explain the differences between the two now? There must have been a meeting with all the announcers and they decided to call reverses and end arounds correctly now.

Although John Madden still calls them reverses because that's what the defense views them as. He makes a point that isn't completely ludicrous, but it still is wrong.

temwr said...

Oh and I have NFC what a gambling reverse is.

El Padrino said...

A reverse is two bets combined.

It pays 4-1. So a $25 reverse brings back $100 if you win both bets. But there is a catch.
If you lose both you lose double your "risk amount". So say you have a $25 reverse for Denver and the Under. If you would have lost both the game and the under bet you would owe $50 plue vig. But if you lose one of them, you only lose your risk amount ($25).

El Padrino said...

defintely
espeacialy if your up money you can quadruple it....

Spaceman Spiff said...

tonight looking like a hitfest. weaver has NEVER gone on short rest and he is more likely to get shelled on regular rest anyways. Plus glavine isnt good on short rest. both teams would benefit from a rain out

JFreak said...

The Cubs players aren't that bad. They just can't keep from tripping over themselves and going down for half seasons at a time.

I could have easily supported bringing Dusty back, he didn't do a horrible job. He had no good players left.

I just don't get hiring Lou. He just doesn't seem like he has the necessary knowledge to work as a manager.

Girardi would have been a better fit. He seems to be able to relate with the players much better, and every Cubs fan I know really likes him.

Another disappointing move by Cubs management.

El Padrino said...

yep
seems likely it'll be a rain out

whocares said...

Never heard it called a reverse before. In my gambling days we called it a "turn".

Isiah Thomas said...

they've been killing the ASU coach here today.

After the game he said something about trying to get a turnover on the punt.

Today he said he shoulda gone for it.

Isiah Thomas said...

who knew Don Strock coached FIU?

Spaceman Spiff said...

macha was fired but he was also fired last year and then got rehired so who knows wtf the A's are doing this time.

Beth82678 said...

Ok, tonight's game is officially a rainout.

Mets-Cards rained out
