Weekend Wrap-Up

Quick Hitters

Tiger : Wins his 6th straight event in England at the Am-Ex Championship. He continues to mind fuck the competition into submission.

Race for the Chase : Weird race. All hell breaks loose at the end. Engine failures and cars running out of gas. Tony Stewart literally coasts to a victory after running out of gas with half a lap left. Jeff Burton remains atop the standings with Jeff Gordon falling the most, losing 4 spots when his engine fails. Talladega is up next.

NBA : Training camps open this week. Sweet.

NHL : I don’t care….yet.

MLB:

AL Division winners : NYY, Minn and Oak. DET stumbles into the wildcard. Oak/Minn and Det/NYY are your matchups.

NL Division winners: NY Mets, STL and SD. LA takes the wildcard. STL/SD and NY Mets/LA are your matchups.

A torn calf muscle turns into a torn rotator cuff for Pedro. Is he done? Out at least 8 months. Not good.

Frank Robinson bids adieu after 50+ years in the game.

Perhaps the biggest MLB story however is the news that names have been released from a federal affidavit from the Jason Grimsley investigation. Has the other shoe dropped? Is this the smoking gun? Clemens, Pettitte and Tejada are all named as having used PED’s. Let’s see if they have anything concrete, this could be HUGE. Stay tuned.

CFB

OSU romps on the road. Solidifies its claim to #1.

GA Tech pulls the upset of the weekend dropping VA Tech in Blacksburg. Fuck Mrs. Brady Quinn, MD. Give me Calvin Johnson as your #1 overall pick next year. I have man love for him.

GA struggles again and SC pulls out a squeaker at Wazzu.

MSU gacks it up to the Illini. Unemployment meet John L. Smith, enjoy yourselves.

NFL

TO returns in a ‘Boys romp over VY and the Titans. VY looked like your typical rook. You’ll always have the Rosebowl VY. An inglorious start to the VY era.

Indy wins a wild one in NY, barely beating the Jets. Indy scores the go ahead TD with 2+ left, only NY takes the ensuing kickoff back to the house, only to be outdone by Peyton and Co. NY is pesky. Indy’s D is suspect.

Houston/MIA : a game of firsts, Mario’s first sack, Kubiak’s first win. Last years wonder kid Nick Saban’s squad is reeling. It’s all been downhill since Daunte’s first game INT’s.

Baltimore/SD: Marty snatches defeat from the jaws of victory. Alright, Steve McNair had more to do with it, but SD was pretty much in control the entire game.

Washington/Jax : As predicted by yours truly Washington fails to score a point against the Jags. Ok, just kidding. Santana Moss isn’t the God, but he is a god. 4 catches, 3 TD’s, including the game winner on the 3rd play of OT. Was at 2-2 is looking tasty.

NE/Cincy : NE shows people that you can’t count them out, taking Cincy behind the woodshed. Paging Chad Johnson….the season has started.

ATL/AZ : Complete ball dipping by ATL. Kurt Warner…out. Matt Leinart…in. Good luck Matt. That O-Line is putrid. The Leinart era has begun. This is the beginning of the end for Denny Green. Say hello to John L. Smith D Green.

CHI/Seattle : Madden Curse? Alright CHI, I’m starting to believe. Complete BEAT DOWN. As said here earlier, Madden has serious love for Favre.

Feel free to comment on these and the other games from a great Week 4.

In closing:

Our first WTF?

Albert Haynesworth, DT, Tenn stomping on Cowboy’s center Andre Gurode’s face, twice. I heard he needed 20 some stitches to close cuts over his eye. I haven’t heard what prompted this outburst but Al Haynesworth…WTF.

Discuss this on a Monday.

Couldn't believe the Haynesworth thing when I saw it. Unbelievable.

Also, I kind of want to know what the official scoring of that last Jets play is. Eight laterals. I don't see any column for that in the box score. Also, around the fifth lateral, some dude was full on his knees. Would have come back even if the Jets scored.

JFreak said...

I said "also" twice in one paragraph. I don't think that's allowed.

Daddy White....

....ND's defence is definitely suspect. They didn't play as much man-to-man as previously but their zone defense needs work.In order to get better rated they have to limit their opposition to under two TD's a game....But the QB catching tandem looks like their having fun and that's going to add lots of points.....their defence needs more 'swagger';they don't look that confident!

Los said...

Haynesworth should probably be suspended for the entire season - that was awful.

Ohio State vs. Michigan may be the real national title game ... we'll see.

The Rev said...

Definitely a WTF moment with Haynesworth. When people start talking about assault charges on the NFL field, it's definitely out of whack.

I'm not too worries about VY. Hhaving a bad debut as an NFL QB has happened a lot. You take your lumps, then you get better.

Hopefully Leinart starting in Arizona means a lot more carries for Edge.

THE CHAMP. said...

Remind me never to pick a crappy team playing against another crappy team in the suicide pool.

I think it's more that Barry Bonds is a complete jackass than it is that he's black. You could make anything racist if you really want to. But it's like TO, when you constantly do stupid stuff people will believe anything.

Suspend that dude for the year. That's crazy to stomp on a guys face. Like Rev said, if you start talking about assault charges on an NFL field....that's crazy.

temwr said...

The stomp was unbelievable. There is no possible way he can even try to play it off as an accident either. He lined it up and nailed him...TWICE.

Set up that fantasy league for Bball. I need to atone for the ass whipping I am receiving in the Pick 'Em thing and the FFL.

why are u suckers hating on Haynesworth? my man was keepin it reelz!

stomping people out while theyre defenseless and helpless is what america is all about. if you cant get paid millions of dollars and stomp on someone else's face, then i dont wanna live here.

apple pie, whores, face stomping. american life, the ultimate dream.

temwr said...

Stomping people out while they are defenseless but then playing it off like you didn't do anything wrong is what America is all about.

He failed miserably at playing it off.

First rule of face stomping: Don't get caught on camera sizing up the dudes face with your spikes.

He got caught so he must be banished.

anonymous said...

yeah, he's gotta see a year for this.. there's really no other option.

temwr said...

I just wished it would have happened during a MNF game so we could have heard TK and JT argue about it. An event like this is what would make JT snap and have him break TK's neck.

TK would be sarcastic about how it wasn't that bad and how it could have been an accident, but JT wouldn't pick up on the sarcasm and then he'd snap.

The Rev said...

I forget... was the Dallas game the Joe Buck game? I was watching the Jets game at the time.

And if so, did Joe Buck's head explode at that moment?

Isiah Thomas said...

Buck was doing the Carolina/NO game. After Foster broke that run he goes "and Carolina goes to 2-2".

I was praying NO would come back and win to shove it up his pretentious ass. Colston got a quick TD but they couldn't recover the onsides kick.

Good weekend for me team wise. First, the Illini beat MSU on the road. I thought they'd lose by at least 30 points.
Then, the Bears beat up on the Seahawks.
Finally, the Cubs season is over which means I can go six months and not have to write about how crappy they are.

The Rev said...

That's damn impressive, Glavine and Maddox!

I might have to watch. But I'm finding it really hard to care about the playoffs now that the Phillies did it to us again.

ToddPacker said...

I can't be that good of a weekend if your team is coached by Mr Ron Zook. I sat through 2 years of that bumbling, stuttering prick. The sooner the Illini get rid of that retard the better.

El pad - I thought of you while leaving the swamp on Sat. and watching Tim Tebow fumble near the goal. Two things about it: It was kind of a dick move by Urban to try and put more points on the board, 'Bama had given up at that point. Also, earlier in the game UF kicker missed a chip shot FG. How's this for a stat, Florida, 5 games into the season and ranked # 5 has ZERO FGs. I think the kicker (Hetland) is 0 for 5 for the year. I know sooner or later that's going to cost them a game.

ToddPacker said...

Rev,

You can't be that disappointed. Did you really expect the Phils to pull it off. Also the hat arguement is weak. Ugly ass hat or not if the Phils won the East this year you would have bought one of those hats (In a freakishly large size I'm guessing)

Lets Go Mets! Payback for '88

Beth82678 said...

Glavine vs Maddox is a definite wow game, for the entire country much less an Atlanta gal like myself. I guess there's one reason at least for a Braves fan to watch the post-season this year. (Unlike most years when it's just to see what round they lose in.)

It'll never happen for like a zillion reasons (a bunch of which are probably actually good ones), but how cool would it be if they had Smoltz throw out the ceremonial 1st pitch for that game.

Isiah Thomas said...

I'd be interested in the Glavine/Maddux matchup if this was 1996.

The Rev said...

Todd...

Of course I would have bought one. And yes, I would have stretched that sumbitch to the last edge of the velcro on back.

I am upset. I got suckered into thinking they could pull it off this season at the end. I should have known better.

But really, I got suckered in more by the fact that this year the rest of the baseball world was expecting us to pull it off. Last season, I don't think anyone really expected us to do it. This year, it was different. The stands were sold out a lot more at the end than they were last year. Ryan Howard captivated us more than anyone has in a long time. It felt different this season.

anonymous said...

philly had a legit shot.. they made an unbelievable run just to get back in contention. it was a nice little Cindy story, and too bad it didnt pan out.

at mid-year, not a soul wouldve expected them to even remotely compete.

temwr said...

Illini looked decent against MSU. Of course MSU looked bad, which is why the Illini ended up winning.

Da Bears looked very good. Seahawks looked bad again. I think they play well every other week. If they don't have a bye next week I expect them to crush whoever they play.

How about this stat that the Pats haven't lost back to back games since, well since a really long time? That is amazing.

El Padrino said...

anyone have a MLB post-season preview idea or column?

jugdish said...

NL: Hell, as long as a team had ~ a .500 record then they had a shot to make the playoffs, or even win their division in the NL (outside of the NL East. It also seems like every NL team is limping into the playoffs.

Glavine vs. Maddox: Zeke, that would have been a great matchup in 1996, especially since they played for the same team.

Da Bearsss: The Bears looked great against the defending NFC champs! Their D had Hasselbeck running for his life for most of the game, their O-line gave Grossman plenty of time to throw, and their running game finally got going. Grossman looks confident and made good decisions (aside from taking that sack early in the game). Its strange to see them pass more than they run, but whatever works! Chicago's secondary has been the weak point of their defense, but they kept Seattle's recieving corps in check all day...excellent way to finish the first quarter of the season!

ToddPacker said...

As Lee Corso would say...Not so fast my friend.....Meyer doesn't really have to pile on, UF shedule is one of the toughest in the country this year. How's this for four consecutive games Alabama, LSU, @ Auburn, off week, Georgia. Add on the fact that they already played at Tenn and they have to finish off the reg season @ FSU, then hopefully the SEC championship game. If UF goes undefeated (very big IF), they will be playing in championship game.

re: Auburn's Schedule

8 home games....EIGHT.
4 away games.

Home games include : Washington St., Buffalo, Arkansas, Tulane and Arkansas State. These are all CUPCAKES.

Remaining home games include: LSU, FLA and Georgia. They beat LSU which was a quality win. But FLA got some lucky breaks to beat a sorry Alabama squad, and GA should have lost to Division III Colorado.

So overall, not too taxing a home schedule.

Away games : Miss. St, South Carolina, Miss. and Alabama.

All but Bama are again CUPCAKES.

Upon further review, Auburn's schedule ain't that tough.

Isiah Thomas said...

I saw this over the weekend but forgot to include it in my update, its a story that is newsworthy and quite troubling....

Brian Davis and Christine Laettner are leading investors in a group that will buy the Memphis Grizzlies.

Reportedly putting up $40 mil of their own money.

I'm surprised something like this hasn't happened sooner. No, not the first openly gay ownership group, but a few ath-a-leets coming together to buy a franchise.

I think King James will own one in the future - when he met with the Wizard of Omaha he reportedly told him he wanted to be "the richest man in the world". I don't doubt he one day might be.

anonymous said...

zeke, maybe you should check with THE authority on football.. Simmons. maybe he could give us some insight.

he'd be able to tell us if they get extra ball dips for a weak schedule (since everyone has their fluffs).
