it's like this, an'like that, and like this and uh....

i'm not even gonna hide it. i'm Tiger Thumping today. Nearly 20 years since D-twa has been near the playoffs.. this town is going crazy already, and it's gonna go through the roof if they do well in the ALCS. you know youve struck a nerve with the city folk when you have people who have never followed the sport in their lives tuning in and making it water cooler talk the next day. im amazed at the assortment of people that are now instantly following The Story around here. it's funny, but encouraging at the same time. but still, deep down inside me, i'd like to slap them in the face for being such obvious bandwagoners. whatdyado. but that celebration! wow.. i still have chills.. just "something special", that's all you can really say.

MNF - broncos and ravens. i think this battle was for "which team is a better middle of the pack team", or "who's gonna fight all year so they can get beat in the first round of the playoffs". even denver's lone touchdown was kinda ugly too... i liked the touch of bad weather though. that always helps to make a watchable game. too bad it didnt snow. at time it looked like it was ready to roll out the ice storm, but fell short. i'd like to see frost and ice on Plummer's porn 'stache, that'd be a nice touch. plus it would give you a reason to actually root for him to be out there instead of Cutler. i'm sure he'll at least see some garbage time and impress, if not end up starting a game or 2. let's see him, VY and Leinart are starting! (although on far shittier teams)

MNF continued.. seriously, this cant last any longer. JT and TC (Theismann and Kornheiser) seems to be warming up. and by warming up i mean you're about to see a fire in Joe's eyes and then see his head explode. this makes for an entertaining broadcast even when the game is stale. i dont know if you read Korn' at all, but he recently wrote an article bemoaning his own actions so far in the booth. he was mad at himself for essentially watering down his performance, and not going with his sarcastic, biting remarks. safe to say, i think he's trying to get back on track. i want to see blood. i think it's what we're all rooting for. will Kornheiser go for Joe's leg? will he try to break it in the same spot as before? we can only hope for these questions to be answered on live tv.

Torre is out. wait, i mean, Torre is in. really, is there any better example of the media TOTALLY making up a story where there wasnt one? Torre out? how about get his ass a pitching staff. and then how about.. you ran into a team that was ON FIRE and got beat. it's not a "Yankee Collapse", it was a Tigers beat-down. absolute ass kicking. your lineup WAS the best.. and you got shut down. you lost to a hotter/better team. accept it.

this is similiar to the USA "dream teams" that we always try to put together, and then try to pick apart and blame. "teams" win, teams full of stars lose. didnt the 2004 Pistons teach us anything? detroit is turning into the city of giant slayers. another "dynasty" down! yeehaw!

There's other topics and i'm gonna straight blow em off for today. we'll discuss em in the comments anyways...

but the push for The Series starts back up tonight and i am ready to go.

let's go Tigers!

(oh, and for the record, Reggie Miller doesnt like gun violence. good stance, thanks for stopping by.)

Manningham reportedly to have knee surgery. *single tear rolling down cheek*

temwr said...

I was just going to ask about that Manningham guy, is he out for the season?

Isiah Thomas said...

I think the story said that he'll be out for this weekends game and possibly longer. Meniscus and possible ligament tear. If thats true he would prob be out at least till Ohio St. (wishful thinking) if not the Jan bowl game.

Isiah Thomas said...

TC is still going on these long stories....one example from last night was Jake Plummer. He was reading from his notes and his stories take a minute. Too long TC.

And who caught Michelle "BD" (Bull Dyke) Tafoya call Jake "Jay" after their post game interview. She goes "Thanks Jay". HA.

Cornheiser needs to shave his head - it looks like a tumbleweed with a bad case of the flu - very tough to watch. Does he think anybody really believes his comb-over is real? Seriously? I'm an expert on this - my dad has had a combover for as long as I can remember - I think he does it, because he doesn't want to get rid of the hairbrush in favor of a wet rag.

I hope you don't mind if I temporarily ride the Detroit Tigers bandwagon.

Isiah Thomas said...

did it look like McNair was more concerned with putting his hands in that little gay hand warmer things QB's wear and getting back to the sidelines to put his coat on rather than playing? Did to me.

Isiah Thomas said...

Rev make room for me too on that bandwagon. At least my pops is from MI and is a life long Tigers fan so I'm not a 100% bandwagoner.

temwr said...

The pitching match-up looks tough for the Tigers today.

What's the plan with Zito? Don't swing at the offspeed stuff or is it swing at that stuff and not the other stuff? Hopefully the Tigers know which one it is.

The Rev said...

I missed the game last night. I was at the Eric Clapton concert in Philly (freakin awesome by the way).

The Ravens are one of several teams that I am waiting for them to come back to Earth. This season, the NFL has a lot of teams that have a better record than they should. The Ravens are one of them.

Matter of fact, this would make a great discussion topic. Who has a better record right now than they should have?

I'll submit 4 teams for that distinction... the Ravens, Rams, Falcons and Saints.

This isn't to say they are bad teams, but they are 4 candidates for a collapse of some sort to make them fall back to mediocrity. And I do think at least one or two of them will be playoff teams now, but which ones?

Discuss.

The Rev said...

No problem, Zeke. But I do think that Iam needs to accept us on the bandwagon. It's only fair.

I have no ties to Michigan whatsoever, I know no one from Michigan except through this blog, and none of my family comes from there. I'm just rooting for the Tigers because they knocked off the Big Bad Wolf and are such a feel good story. That, and I have always liked Jim Leyland.

Besides, my Uncle Richard once went to a game in Tigers Stadium in the mid 80's and brought me back a program. Does that count for anything?

Isiah Thomas said...

in case anyone cared....

SG: 4-7-3
SH: 5-6-3

Isiah Thomas said...

I went to a game at Tigers Stadium once, Bert Blylevin was pitching.

I'd never seen Cecil Fielder either....needless to say I was shocked when I saw that lard ass able over to first. I was def. emotionally scarred from that for at least a month.

The Rev said...

Continuation from the last thread...

I would argue against the Bears winning the Super Bowl by 21.

Sometimes teams roll it up in the regular season, then implode in the playoffs because the wekaneszes they had all along that they got away with in the regular season got exposed come playoff time.

I've seen it happen in my own backuyard... the Buddy Ryan era Eagles teams. They were unstoppable in the regular seaosn, but once playoff time came they couldn't win a game.

I'll give a second example... the Jim Mora era Saints used to routinely win 12-13 games a season. How far did they get?

The Bears could easily fall into that category. I don't know if they will or not. But you could argue the opposite way jst as easily right now.

manningham is supposedly having arthoscopic surgery, so the initial hope is that he will be back by the end of the year (from what ive gathered so far). we'll see, since most of this is speculation at this point.. here's hoping he comes back soon.

and as far as TC, holy shit dude, stop writing an article for your opening "comments". he tries to take you on a magical journey with words.. and youre like, how about give your opinion real quick, and lets move on. this is actually one area that JT is better.. keep it short.

and Los, youre so right.. i had that sickening feeling last night when i saw his hair/head. somebody call hospice, he looks like he's dying.

welcome to the bandwagon, new applicants are now being accepted. (the people i wanna slap are the ones that dont follow sports at ALL, ie, other office people.)

The Rev said...

I saw Cecil Fielder in a game once in Fenway Park between the Tigers and Red Sox back in the day.

He hit a ball over the Green Monster that I swear to this day was still going up when it crossed over the wall. I was sitting in the bleachers and had a view of the homer. It was a "HOLY SHIT" moment for sure.

temwr said...

Well last friday SG said he was .500, so now he should be below .500. I imagine he will lie again and somehow have closed the gap on the SH.

The Falcons and Ravens will fall back to earth and miss the playoffs. The Falcons can't pass and the Ravens can't play offense unless it is nice outside and the game has about 5 minutes to go.

Plus the Falcons are playing in the NFC South which has the Saints a resurgent Carolina team and a Tampa team that can't possibly go 0-16, can they?

anonymous said...

in hike school we went to a tigers game when Fielder was still with us. he was in his decline, so we took the time to make a nice sign...

"two words for Cecil: slim fast".

we got told to take the sign down later in the game (7th-ish?), but it was funny.

anonymous said...

is SH for Sports Ho?

Rev, and i think the Saints are gonna be the one team to continue to be a surprise. i can see the others faltering. they seem like pretenders, but i think the Saints have a balanced enough team to make a run, or at least legitimately fight for a playoff spot.

Los said...

We should have a list of fat ball players - Sid Fernandez would have to be near the top, right?

temwr said...

Stiggy said...

Two things:
First, until the Bears make it to the Super Bowl, I'm not thinking about it. I'll be watching every week hoping everyone on the team stays healthy enough to actually make a push to and through the playoffs.

Second, do all you guys have a thing against women on the sidlines of games? Does doing this automatically make one, how have I seen some of you phrase it, "a dyke"? 'Cause if I had the opportunity to do that for a living I certainly would. And I'm not gay.

Spaceman Spiff said...

BTW I'm rooting for the Tigers over the A's, but the tables will quickly turn if they are playing the Mets in the WS.

Isiah Thomas said...

re: Bears Superbowl...

uhh didn't they get steam rolled AT HOME by the Panthers last year in the divisional round. After all the "is this the greatest D ever" talk. SMOKED at home. Prove me wrong this time Bears. And their schedule is EASIER! this season.

How does this happen? Yeah I get they play in a weak division and I get the rotating divisional matchups. But the NFL has to do something. Look at Pitt's schedule compared to Chi's.

The Rev said...

the saints seem very Tigeresque to me..

and stiggy, i wrote this great explanation for you.. but i'll just keep it real..

if youre trying to put a lady on the field simply to be attractive (because you think so little of your audience), then make her attractive.

if youre gonna put a lady on the field because shes a good reporter, then make sure shes a good reporter.

they try to force women into broadcasts simply because they think all men watching will immediately hump the screen or something..

the women that they have chosen are (a) not attractive and (b) not sports smart.

at least bring ONE quality if youre gonna have the job.. i think that's what most people find annoying.

I don't have a problem with women being on the sidelines...i have a problem with anyone being on the sidelines. They don't bring anything to the game. It's just the fact that announcers can't do their job anymore. Everything is so canned and pre-planned.

NASCAR chase is good this year. Although I don't get why they say some people are totally out of it when they are only like 150 pts out. That is not totally out with 6 races to go.

I hate, HATE, when the media tries to create drama that doesn't exist instead of covering the drama that really does exist. In NASCARs case the field is probably as close as it has ever been after 4 chase races, and nobody is more than 200 pts out. Why are they talking about how Gordon's hopes are done when he is 147 out? Why don't they talk about the fact that 5 drivers are within 51 points of the lead??

temwr said...

And the Chase is totally up for grabs and all 10 still have a shot. 185 out is nothing for those 2 in tenth. It's not like the guys in front of them are tearing it up on the track. Everyone so far is just doing OK.

What matters now is advancing in the playoffs, and they have done that. And they are working on doing it again. As long as you make it to the next round, you are definitely hot, much hotter than the division winner who got bounced.

This might be the first and last time my school makes the USA Today sports section. Unless someone goes off Rae Carruth style.

i'm offended that texas fans wear cowboy hats and usc has a 'trojan'. i find that very violent.. and "Bears" is offensive to animals, and "hurricanes" is offensive because the weather down in FL has KILLED people..

i find every mascot of every team very offensive.
