The Weekend. Reviewed.

Thursday

So we need to start where the weekend started for me. Thursday, in Chicago. A day game at Wrigley field. First time I was there since I was a little kid. Just absolutely amazing. The game was decent, Cubs lost, but the whole atmosphere was great. Ended up going to a Wrigley area bar. Just awesome. It's a must for a baseball fan. And, I almost forgot the best part. I caught a foul ball. It was in BP, but it still counts.

The Steelers seemed decent. It looked much more like Miami lost the game. The only thing that really jumped out at me during that game was that when a man kisses another man he's either European or a flamer. And I'm pretty sure Joey Porter isn't European.

Friday

Nothing happened on Friday. I'm positive of this.

Saturday

Notre Dame looked good. Offense was in sync, and the defense was opportunistic with turnovers. But I think the big question to ask is was it Notre Dame proving they were that good, or was it Penn State proving they were that bad?

What in the world happened to Florida State? Troy? Seriously? That was horrendous. I've heard of overlooking an opponent, but that was crazy. Troy gained more yards then Miami against that D. FSU is lucky to have made it through the weekend.

Two different 2OT games. Iowa looked horrible against a really bad Syracuse team. I didn't hear why Drew Tate didn't play, but that almost ruined their season, and lots of people picked them to run the table. Boston College turned in the only Top 25 upset of the week, knocking off Clemson with a blocked PAT.

I'm a little shocked by the OSU-UT result. I just didn't think OSU was that good. They pretty much dominated on both sides of the ball. Although, I will say, if that Texas reciever doesn't fumble at the 2 during the first quarter, this is a different game. And what was with Texas' running game? I don't think they did a straight handoff the entire game. It was draw left, draw right. It seemed to work, but it was so odd.

Maria Sharapova won the U.S. Open. She's hot. And a good player. Good combo. And she feels pretty. Which is always good for one's self-esteem.

Sunday

The day we've all been waiting for. NFL Kickoff weekend. And it feels good.

I think this week definitively proves that Brett Farve should have retired. A telling sign: Farve overthrew a WR, directly into Vasher's hands, and Vasher dropped it. Very next play...Farve overthrows it into another DB's hands.

Seattle just looked bad. Nothing much else to say about that. Maybe the Super Bowl loser curse has weight to it.

What happened to Carolina being the best overall team (per hoardes of media-types). They sucked it up on both sides of the ball. Only 65 yards on the ground, why didn't DeAngelo Williams get any carries?

Stallworth looks like he might finally be the answer for Philly at WR. They did play a bad team, but they still looked nice. This has been said a thousand times, but Houston fans have to be sick seeing what they could have had in Reggie Bush. Especially with Davis down, it just magnifies things so much more.

Colts eek it out over the Giants. Big problems for the Colts with the run on both sides. Over 7 yards a carry on defense, and near 2 on offense. Eli wins per the stats, but Peyton pulls the win out. The Vinatieri pick-up looks real big now. Vanderjagt probably could have made those 4 FGs, but it looks much better to say that he wouldn't.

Oh yeah, and Federer is amazing, and wins another major. Roddick chokes again.

Looking Ahead

And the biggest thing for this Monday, remembering the lives we lost on this day 5 years ago. A horrible tragedy, and something that can never be forgotten.

Hey! Did you think that the fake punt and #26's run was for the Michiganders to see?Weiss and staff are ready....and Weiss' way of paying tribute to the Notre Dame student body after the game was significant because the 'team' feels responsible and will repay by their dedication....

I'm not so sure the Falcons-Carolina game was the Panthers being overhyped or the Falcons being underestimated. I'm sure most of you didn't see it, but the Falcons totally dominated that game, much more than the score showed. Dunn was fantastic as usual, and Vick did enough for the win - some nice runs of course and a few nice passes, but several bad misses on VERY open receivers, to where even the kneepad-wearing announcers had to call him out on those misses.

But the defense looked absolutely amazing, even with Kerney missing most of the game, and all of their off-season pick-ups looked great. (And yes, I know Steve Smith didn't play, but at least according to the ATL paper he and DeAngelo have made up. Whew!) John Abraham was a 1-man wrecking crew and played a FANTASTIC game - depending on the diagnosis of his groin injury, I may want him to father my first child. :-)

Man, was I hoping for a Troy upset win on Saturday.

Dallas lost this week, and Bledsoe looked awful - can't wait for the meltdown with T.O. to start!

OK, so I am watching the OSU/Texas game with a bunch of OSU fans and all they do is bitch about how Bob Costas hates them and clearly wants Texas to win.

I wasn't quite getting that out of him, although he is a dolt.

Do people in Texas say the same thing about Costas, except they think he was a huge OSU fan? Or do they say, "yeah that's our Bob, he clearly loves Texas...in fact I bet Mack got his cold sore from Bob."

ebntx said...

ok...lets this get this over with. my team stinks, but hey if this werent fantasy at least i could look forward to the #1 pick in next years draft. i love optimisim.

And that fake punt ND did was sweet. I want to know if Weis called it, or if the upback called it. PSU had 4 guys on the line and 3 were on one side. I would have ran for the first down there. Although just the first down, not any farther than that.

El Padrino said...

anyone see the phantom pass interference call on Giant WR Tim Carter last night that totally killed the drive and essentially a chance at coming back and beating the colts who by the way don't look invincible?

Sincerely,
Giant fan whining.

I did see the Bears dominate the Packers yesterday. I know the Packers suck, but the Bears did what they should have done. They shut them out! That was the first time the Pack had been shut out in 233 consecutive games. The Bears offense looked OK, but struggled in the red zone. Next up...the Lions!

Did anyone see the Lions - Seahawks game? Were the Lions really that good, or the Hawks just that bad?

Isiah Thomas said...

Did Weiss give the ND fans the rest of his candy bar or something?

Isiah Thomas said...

oh god here comes the bears talk again....

what happened when they faced a real offense and real team in the playoffs? Oh that's right they got BEAT DOWN, at home no less.

Keep the Bears talk on ice till they play and beat a real team.

jugdish said...

Good prediction on ND too there Zeke...

El Padrino said...

bears have a cupckae sched

they'll be 13-3
then they have to prove they can win in the playoffs

jugdish said...

...and you will continue hearing Bears talk whether or not they win or lose because I'm a real fan.

jugdish said...

I agree...although sometimes the schedule in the NFL at the beginning of the season is like preseason college FB rankings...bullshit. You never know who the breakout teams will be in the NFL from year to year. They do have an easier schedule because of their division though.

Umm, I meant Brent Muskberger or whatever...Not Bob Costas.

I watched the UT - OSU game at a Buffalo Wild Wings down here in the Houston area...sure was quiet during that second half.

Spaceman Spiff said...

that was a horrific PI call on the Giants last night, it cost them the game, and I loved it

Martin VanNostrand said...

I'm still laughing about this. My wife saw all the Manning vs Manning hype on the television and stated she might like to watch some of the game. Then when the game started she said,"Wait they're both QB's? So they aren't on the field at the same time at all?" From this she deemed they really were not playing against each other, just against the others team and didn't watch the game. Funny stuff.

re: Friday

Friday was the HOF inductions for the Hoops HOF.

Is Joe Dumars really a HOFer? And Geno Auriema?

You're saying Geno Auriema = Charles Barkley = HOF. Not in my book.

Isiah Thomas said...

Andy Roddick.....SUCKS. Plain and simple. The guy is a product of the media hype machine.

You can't compare Tiger to Roger. Federer has ZERO competition. At least some other golfers, Vijay, Ernie, Mitts, etc have a chance.

Isiah Thomas said...

Yes I think the Falcons could have been underestimated and YES the Panthers were overhyped. They were everyone's pick to go to the SB and they got shellacked at home. I thought they were a complete team but they couldn't move the ball. (Last part heard on the herd but its a good point)

Isiah Thomas said...

Joey Porter is not European, that leaves only one alternative.

ebntx said...

ok spiff...what are the chances randle el has about 4 td and 150 receiving? my ffl needs a boost as it is on life support.

Martin VanNostrand said...

So unless LT (the one in SD) can score 27 tonight it looks like Spiff waxed me. I would like to congratulate Mr. Chris Simms for scoring a nice -4 for my squad. Maybe Jfreak was right when he called Simms a nice pick up for the 8th round (my 4th round selection I believe).

Spaceman Spiff said...

ebntx,
randle el's potential tonight maxes at 2 TD, 1 returning punt and 1 receiving, but the chance of even that is very very slim. so ur done this week.

BERLIN -- Soccer's governing body wants Zinedine Zidane and Marco Materazzi to make peace after the infamous World Cup head-butt.

"We are definitely working on that," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said Monday before a two-day conference to assess the World Cup in Germany.

One suggestion was for them to meet at Robben Island in South Africa, where former President Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid leaders were once imprisoned, Blatter said. --espn.com

WTF? They want to reunite them in South Africa? I'm a soccer fan and this is just stupid. Equating a headbutt and apartheid is just retarted.

Let them stay mad at each other or make up on their own terms.

You think they care?

Thats like making Steve Smith and DeAngelo Hall make up. I don't want to see that. I want to see Steve Smith burn him again then scream into the camera :

Just saw this story on the local news this morning and thought it was interesting enough to share. Some furniture store owner in Chicago over Labor Day had this promotion where if you bought furniture that weekend and then the Bears shut out the Packers you'd get 100% of your money back. Apparently since the Pack hadn't been shut out in like 230+ games he felt safe. Well as I'm sure everyone here knows, this was their first time in like forever getting shut out, so now this guy has already had to refund money to 200+ customers.

Wonder if the store owner can go after Favre to get reimubrsed...
