Upon further review, Referee Ed Hoculi says its Tuesday

Some of us have pointed out some flaws in the feel good story of last night.

1) Obviously the Saints mean a lot to the city and their community. In respect to giving the city hope and maybe being a catalyst for rebirth. But I remember people wearing bags on their heads to Saints games and people calling them the Aint’s so I’ll take their importance for what its worth. Anyway, it was nice to see the Dome alive and rocking again. However, when they keep showing shots of the lower ninth ward and then the Dome then Bourbon Street it makes you get a little Scoop Jackson and Spike Lee and wonder why over a year later it still looks like a nuke hit the predominantly black parts of town.

2) The pregame concert : U2 and Green Day. Alright cool, a little pregame entertainment. Laissez les bon temps roule. But when a horde or preppy white kids are rushing the field to get close to the stage…..Also, when they’d pan the crowd I saw a ton more white faces sitting in the lower levels. I just found it odd that amongst all the feel good story lines the same old black and white divide was smacking us square in the face and narry a peep was made about it. Alright I’ll put down my Jason Whitlock hoagie now.

Other story lines….

Atlanta shaved points and/or threw the game, plain and simple. Dropped passes, no blocking, etc. Mora coming out in his post-game press conference and saying a very small part of him was happy that NO won. I wonder if Arthur Blank will write another letter apologizing for his teams shitty play. I don’t put all the blame on Mike Vick for that loss either, even with his crappy stat line. I counted a shit load of passes that hit receivers in the hands and were flat dropped.

Joey T / TC – This combo will just not work. I don’t think Joey T will take too kindly to TC calling out his stupid comments anymore. I can see Joey T either saying with a tearful voice “stop making fun of me” or shanking TC. One or the other. A few more “they have to run with their weight over their feet” comments and that booth will combust.

Coaching – why the fuck do you run Reggie Bush up the middle, two consecutive plays from 3 yards out? There are a million ways to run plays for him but running him up the middle would be the last one I’d think of. Dumb.

Other random football thoughts…..

Matt Leinart will take over for Old Man Warner this Sunday. Interesting after 3 games the “New Era of Cardinal Football” is restarting again. Glad I’m not a Cards fan. Also they finally sold the naming rights to their new stadium, instead of calling it Pink Taco Stadium; they agreed to call it The University of Phoenix Stadium. Boo.

And the Madden jinx is alive and well, Shaun Alexander has a broken bone in his foot. Any thoughts on Mo Morris?

Apparently they are still playing baseball - who knew.

The White Sox are finito while the Angels remain pesky. That’s quite a comeback for the Twins who are still alive for the Central title. STL is crapping the bed and giving new life to Houston who is now only 2.5 games back. Too little too late? LA and Philly tied for the NL wildcard. I’m ready for playoff MLB. I think they need to shorten the season personally.

Let’s do this on a Tuesday.

I was at the Phillies and Astros game last night. It was a little deflating. We had a chance to take a one game lead over the Dodgers and the bullpen collectively shit the bed in the 7th inning.

Now it's basically a 6 game season.

Yes, it's fun just to be in it because the Phillies were near dead 2 months ago, but I have had enough of near misses.

Isiah Thomas said...

One more thing about TC...he goes off on these long soliloquies while something important is happening or they need to go to commercial break....shorten it up TC.

The Rev said...

And as far as the Saints go, I'm happy for them. I hope my cousin who got trapped in New Orleans during the flooding got to go to that game.

And I don't know what shocked me more about what you wrote, Zeke... the fact that you and I agree on the black and white divide in NO, or your use of the term "hoagie".

I always thought hoagie was such a Philly term.

whocares said...

First thing that ran through my head after Vick fumbles, sets the Saints up for a scoop up defensive TD, The Saints screw THAT up, so ATL let's them block the punt:

"This game's rigged."

It's like Vick was giving them a TD, but the Saints still managed to botch that play, so the Falcons had to find an easier way to let them score. If they had messed up that play I was planning on watching Vick actually HAND the ball to one of the D-lineman and let him watlz into the endzone.

whocares said...

Rev.,

Why dont you just ask your cousin if he went to the game? Dont just sit there and hope.

El Padrino said...

i thin TC is a bit fruity

the way he sits and cetain mannerisms makes me think he's light in the shorts

------------------
huge baseball fan ...but i think it should be a shorter season as well, say around 150 games maybe
i know it's only 12 game shave but it shortens it up a bit and eliminates the 19 division games each team play

Who else saw Old Dubya's coin toss?

First, it was premature. Referee Ed Hoculi hadn't given him the OK. Old Dub just went for it.

Second, it was limp wristed. The gigondo sized coin just fell flat to the ground, I don't think it flipped once.

Poor showing for Old Dub.

The Rev said...

I just pimped us again at Shanoff's blog. He's recruiting blog posts from other blogs to view and maybe link to.

One of these days he'll get that blogroll going.

temwr said...

TMQ hates punts. He writes about them too much. He always says a team should not punt if it is on its opponents 40yd line or so because a punt only nets you 20 yards or so.

What he fails to see is that the 20 yards you net from that punt is the same 20 yards that keeps the opponent from scoring on the next drive. I suspect the % of times you score some points starting from your own 20 is far far less than if you started at your own 40.

Isiah Thomas said...

its all a scam Rev. Shanoff hasn't and won't link any other blogs from his. Its not in his best interests. You can tell he's pimping that blog hard trying to get as many people as he can to link to it. He's desperate to parlay what is left of his DQ/MQ fame into a paying gig.

100% chance he won't link to any other blogs. It would take away traffic from his site.

anonymous said...

Tem, im with you.. this is not Madden on his xbox, it's the real game.

punting is a worthwhile choice. you could pin a team deep inside the 5 or 10.. he's basically saying that that's not worth the try.

hmm...

The Rev said...

Perhaps Zeke.

I'm going to watch him for the next couple of weeks. If he doesn't do anything with other blog posts, then we will know for sure.

temwr said...

On a side note if I ever meet TMQ, I will punch him in the face.

He throws out stats that don't even back up what he was talking about.

Case in point, last year he was complaining about weathermen and how they get everything wrong (which they are wrong alot, but that is beside the point). So he points to a game where the weatherman said 40% chance of rain, but it ended up not raining. So he said that is another example of the weatherman always getting it wrong...In this case the weatherman actually got it right. 40% chance of rain also means 60% chance of not rain. So he is saying it is more probable hat it won't rain. It didn't rain, the weatherman was correct.

TMQ needs punched in the face.

I would have ranked boxing 4th about 10 years ago. I used to be more of a boxing fan, until Mike Tyson bit Holyfield's ear. I'll go to my grave saying that Holyfield would have beaten Tyson even in Iron Mike's prime. Evander had his number.

NASCAR ranks about 297th in my world. But that's just me.

100% agree.

He's a smart guy, he went to Harvard B-School. He knows what he's doing. I think the basis for his stuff is his own true opinion but he definitely sprinkles in some non-sense to get attention.

His instant history bs is all to get people's attention. Best ever after one game and all that? Please. Even a moron wouldn't get behind that. He can't believe it, he's just trying to laugh all the way to the bank.

What's annoying is that his lemmings just sit there and slurp him down agreeing with him bc he's somewhat accessible. Does he really care about his lemmings? Hell no, he just wants to get paid. People are just too dumb to realize it.

i think the amount of points allowed to be "teased" varies from sportsbook to sportsbook. with mine a 10 point tease is the maximum.
honestly, this early in the season the oddsmakers are as clueless as the general population. they overvalue and undervalue teams a tremendous amount the first few weeks. the teams are closer than that. adding a touchdown to generous odds already--take the pats +13--seems to me to be a great way to make up for our bar tabs on the weekend. and what is even nicer is that an 8 team 7-point tease pays out 10-1. so you dont even need to wager that much to get a nice return. and if you lose you dont lose that much.

This part of my comment is in reference to the weather thing. When a meteorologist says there is a 40% chance of rain, snow, whatever, he means that roughly 40% of the metro area will see some of that precipitation. So, if you live in a large metro area like I do, chances are I will not see the precipitation. In case you’re wondering, I know this because when I was young I either wanted to be a meteorologist or the next broadcaster for the Cubs. That didn’t work out for me. Instead I’m a substitute teacher looking for a full-time job.

temwr said...

Also - I loved the Statefarm ads about how they helped out. I'm sure they did, but in Spike's documentary they give examples of how most insurance companies wouldn't cover the damage. They showed one actors fathers house, which was destroyed and the insurance company only paid a miniscule sum of money, like $300 total.
