Tuesday Morning Quarterhack

Monday Night Foosball was a a good contest between a couple of evenly matched squads. Lowest scoring Monday night ever, so they say. Theissman and Kornheiser, aka TC, inched ever closer to a potential death match. Super Blow Champs? How do you goose-egg it, seriously? I know the Jags D is supposed to be solid and all.. but damn man, zilch? I'm thinkin Big Ben and his stitched-up side needed to sit. He looked to be bailing out of every possible hit (which I'm sure I would've too). But bottom line is, he was not 100%, and I think in this case they should've plopped him on the bench. The whole "fighting through injury/recovery" thing is played out. At certain points you're hurting the team, and I think this might've been one of those times. Dude has had a really rough last few months.. slow it down fella, you've got a whole career to go.

Whack-10 admitted that the refs blew the calls in the OU/Ducks game. Is that consolation for Bob and his Sooners? Obviously they're still fired up. And they've said they're not gonna take the game off the books, but maybe the rankings should reflect the "non-win". Maybe we'll see the coaches give some love to OU. But probably not.

We've been talking football for days, so let's pass some love to the NY Mets, who popped the playoff cherry first. Also, the Dodgers jacked 4 homers in the 9th en route to a comeback win. The playoff battle continues...

And lastly on this mini-cap morning, on a non-hater note, I see that Peter Gammons is due back on-air this week. Good times. Not to be mean, but hopefully this won't be a Dick Clark thing. No need to make him suffer through that. But it sounds like it won't be..

-------------

Alright, so a topic was brought to my attention by blogger Bryan2857...

There's only 5 out of 32 starting QB's that have won a superbowl
Favre, Brady, Warner, and Rothlesburgeshacagher, B. Johnson and Bledsoe*.

So, why do we hype QB's so much when they haven't proved anything yet? The mannings, vick, culpepper, palmer, mcnabb, hasselback. All big names, all have done shit. When people talk about certain QB's it's like they've won everything possible. The Manning's story last week was nice, brother v. brother and all, but neither of them has really won much of anything.

Discuss.

--
(And I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but Notre Dame got boned.)

UPDATE

Secondary topic, which I forgot to throw in. This stems from a topic from out of our femine side. Beth's question about the best and worst teams after week 2.

Here's the change to that question... How about the WORST 2-0 team, and the BEST 0-2 team. So much was made of the Redskins, Miami, Carolina.. all 0-2. Will they bounce back? Are the Falcons for real, can Minnesota continue to win ugly, can Reggie and Drew carry the Saints?

I agree Big Ben (kinda gay knickname if you ask me) hurt the Stillers last night.

But I think Cowher wanted to get him game tested before the Bengles come to town.

I'm about one more MNF broadcast from turning the volume off. Joey T is just not easy on the ears.

jugdish said...

Big Ben had a 104 fever before the game...he never should have played.

Isiah Thomas said...

there has to be some sort of recourse for teams that get jobbed by officials. Coming out after the fact and saying "we screwed up" and suspending the refs doesn't cut it. A one game suspension? Make it a season long suspension.

THE CHAMP. said...

I don't think ben will ever be the same. the dude was seconds away from dying! how do they expect him to play 100% now?

Isiah Thomas said...

good to hear Gammons will be back, good call on the Dick Clark comparison. I hope for PG's sake he's 100% healthy. No need to trot him out there if he isn't.

pac-10: i say u just stuff that crap under the rug like youre the government. dont come out and say u were wrong. just ingore it and it'll go away... this way just makes those players MORE pissed off and now makes for questions like mine.. so should OU get some love, and OR get treated as a one-loss team? in a perfect world, that would be the correct situation...

I've pretty much given up on MLB for now, until the playoffs start, hopefully they'll be good.

And who saw my MVP pick ball dip the Chi Sox over the weekend?

anonymous said...

well with MLB, these divsion races are tight and it'll make for some exciting games down to the wire. i think base-a-ball needs it. they need good teams competing hard rather than continuous stories of fatheaded athletes sucking down drugs like theyre morning lattes.

although an interesting stat thrown up during my Tigers' stomp out over the ChiSox.. in the last 12 games (including last night's), Chi has to go 11-2, and the Tigs 6-7 for the sox to make it in.

so pretty much, unless there's a MAJOR fallout, the Tigs should playing in october. 1987 no mo'!

Because QB's are usually the captain of the ship, aren't they?

Hey, you forgot Bledsoe ... he won a Super Bowl ... pulling splinters out of his ass.

Spaceman Spiff said...

jags shoulda went after TO in the offseason, great defense to keep them in the game all the time, no number 1 receiver, leftwich would have been getting him the ball early and often.

Isiah Thomas said...

Leftwich can really chuck the ball but that wind-up will hurt him in the long run.

temwr said...

Chris Simms watched his dad win one. That should count as something. Apparently it counts for 3 picks a game....bastard.

I certainly hope Gammons comes back and shows no significant signs of his stroke. I am getting fed up with people on sports shows or new year's shows bringing me down by looking/sounding like they are on their death bed.

1) Benny Parsons needs to shut it down he sounds like death on NASCAR telecasts.
2) Dick Clark starts my New Year's out on a sad note. Thanks, jackass.
3) Lou Holtz had a stroke and apparently nobody told him. He needs to shut it down.

temwr said...

As for Big Ben, I agree with Zeke, I definitely think Cowher wanted to get him some PT before they play the Bengals.

Having said that he looked terrible and probably should have only played a half. Put Batch in!

El Padrino said...

we talk about sean tyalor, ed reed, polamalu, hamlin, milloy but never any mention of Donovan Darius

every hit he adminstered last night was ferocious

ben should have never played
cowher knows he made a big mistake.

pac-10, what a disaster..
OU got jobbed big time

METS, first since 1988
hopefully the outcome will be different

anyone see the pads crap the bed in LA late last night
4 back to backs then a 2 run dinger to win from Nomar

The Rev said...

Big Ben looked like he was sick. He didn't belong there.

But I'm happy he was because I started the Jacksonville defense and the shutout gave me the win in my money league.

Spaceman Spiff said...

anonymous said...

how many games has that padres closer blown this year? and we'll count the all star game too..

and Rev, i guess he WAS sick too.. 104 fever? hmm..

Isiah Thomas said...

EP great call on Darius, I was thinking the same thing after one of his blasts last night.

He was getting some pub but then got hurt either last year or the year before.

The Rev said...

You know, I have no problem with that list of QB's who did nothing except for one name.

And no, I'm not going to harp on McNabb. Believe me, I realize just as well as anyone what he's done in the big games. I have no problem with anyone saying he's done nothing.

But including Carson Palmer in that list? I mean, he's in year 3. I think it's too soon to label him a "never did anything" QB. Those other guys have been around.

And I wonder if we can include Bledsoe in the list of Super Bowl winning QB's. He did "rescue" them in the AFC Championship. But in the end, not only did he pick splinters out of his ass, he no-showed the championship parade. He took his ball and went home.

Isiah Thomas said...

I think all the 0-2 teams look like shit.

Carolina - can't move the ball w/o Steve Smith. Maybe their D can carry them.

Tampa - Chris Simms ain't the answer and his back-up is some guy named Gradkowski. YIKES. I feel bad for people that drafted Caddy Williams high.

Detroit, GB, Cleveland, TN, Houston, Oakland - good luck battling it out for the right to take that loser Mrs. Brady Quinn, MD. Whoever drafts him, make sure you have plenty of hair spray.

KC - I think Herm "Mr. .500" Edwards will be the anchor on this team. LJ can keep them in games though.

MIA - Culpepper obviously isn't anywhere near 100% and when you hear rumblings to sit him in favor of Harrington..... I'm very interested to see how Saban continues to react.

WAS - don't know what to make of this team. Inconsistent offense and defense. No real signs of life. Portis is hurt. Springs is hurt. Supposed strengths of the team are weaknesses (O-Line and defense). I'd be higher on their chances for a turn-a-round if Old Man Brunell wasn't under center. I'm starting to worry about Jason Campbell, I mean does the guy completely suck? Get him in there with a watered down playbook.

Overall, 0-2 = poo poo.

The Rev said...

Best 0-2 team... Carolina. I still think they have a win streak coming, but it better be soon.

Worst 2-0 team... Minnesota. I still think they can win that division if Chicago collapses, but that's mainly because the division is weak.

Why not go for the best and worst 1-1 team while we are at it?

Isiah Thomas said...

New Orleans is the flukiest of the 2-0 teams, they'll regress back to a 6-10 type season.

Honestly, the "worst" 2-0 team is the Patriots. They've struggled with Buf and NYJ - both supposed bottom dwellars of the AFC and AFC East. And they just traded their best WR.

The loss of both co-ordinators and major contributors is starting to catch up. Although they still have Tom Brady which makes up for a lot of loses.

Their schedule looks ridiculously easy at the moment, write about that SG. So they might make it to the playoffs but I don't see them making noise in the playoffs. I say one and done for them.

Minnesota is intriguing. They will probably end up 8-8 or 9-7 again but that's not too bad for a 1st year head coach and 58 yr old QB.

Isiah Thomas said...

1-1's, I'll take NYG and Pitt.

I'd like to believe in Philly but losing the Freak and completely collapsing doesn't help. I'll reserve judgement on them for the meantime.

Arizona is by far the worst 1-1 team. They will be lucky to get to 6-10. Warner will be hurt shortly. That O-line is plain awful.

El Padrino said...

they're showing Cin/Pitt and Chi/Minn out here this weekend. For us non-dishers this is good news.

The Rev said...

Time to have a disagreement with Zeke. It's been a while.

The Patriots are better than that.

Granted, we all thought the Bills and the Jets were going to be bottom feeders, and I don't know if either one of them will make the playoffs. But I think those two teams are a little better than advertised.

And you know as well as anyone that when division rivals get together, the teams get their heads up a little bit more and raise their games. This is especially true when the opponent is a three time Super Bowl winner. They treat the game like it's their Super Bowl and come out with something to prove. So when you have both factors coming into play, it's easy to see why the Bills and Jets would play them tough.

Give some credit to the Pats for fighting out two tough division games. While I do agree that losing the coordinators hurt, and NE doesn't have the secondary it used to anymore, they're still a very good team.

Maybe I still have some love for the Pats from my time living up there. I might be biased.

Spaceman Spiff said...

out here in CA, they said they will be showing skins-texans on sunday morning, i wont believe it til i see it, but i hope its true, rarely get to see teh skins unless its against the division

Isiah Thomas said...

I can't take another week of watching the Skins, I hope the Chi/Minn game is on instead.

I'll just follow along over the net for the Skins.

Isiah Thomas said...

eh, I'm not impressed with the Pats.

Like I said, they have an easy sched so maybe they'll look better later.

I think their window is closing though.

THE CHAMP. said...

I include Carson Palmer because of the hype. It's not a knock on any of those guys really, just a fact that people LOVE them but they really haven't done anything.

Bledsoe doesn't count because he didn't start a Super Bowl winning game. There's a bunch of QB's that have been to a Super Bowl and rode the bench. (See: Chaz Batch)

El Padrino said...

they love them because they have high expectations to win

On the Bears two opponents this season, Green Bay sucks, granted. They dominated the Lions, who just the week before, held the defending NFC champs and the league's highest scoring offense last season to 9 points.

Why is Carolina 0-2? I look at all the 0-2 teams and I can explain why they are sitting there, but not Carolina. WTF is wrong with them?

Oh and TMQ is up, so I will be reading that for the next 5 days. That guy writes too much and uses too many big words. Takes forever to read.

First sentence I don't understand in TMQ this week:

" A lackluster guy takes you to the dance, but he picks you up in a washed car and brings you a nosegay."

WTF is a nosegay?? I understand the rest, but nosegay??

jugdish said...

Tem...Carolina = OK

The Rev said...

nosegay \NOHZ-gay\, noun:
A bunch of odorous and showy flowers; a bouquet; a posy

I had to Google it myself.

Question is... why would TMQ use a term that no football fan in his right mind would know? I mean, how many of us know a term for an ugly bunch of flowers?

Kinda fruity if you ask me.

Spaceman Spiff said...

Carr seems to be playing well. What they could really use is an electricfying offensive weapon.

thejaywhite said...

temwr said...

TMQ has to use at least one word that he knows nobody will know. He does this to remind himself that he is "better" than the rest of us.

It also compensates for the fact that either he never gets any, or if he does get some then it is only from ugly dudes.

temwr said...

Carr=OK
Jags=OK

jugdish said...

Another one of Carr's problems is he gets sacked like 5 times a game and never has any time in the pocket. Fans down here are tearing him up. I don't care who you put back there...if they don't have any time, they're gonna lose!

The Rev said...

I was a fan of TMQ at one time, but it seems to me that he is falling in love with himself and his style of writing more and more with each column.

Really, that read today could have been 40% shorter, and it would have made it 60% more entertaining. I was skipping parts.

Best mention in the article was the Krispy Kreme burger. Really, someone came up with the idea to serve a bacon cheeseburger and use a Krispy Kreme donut as the bun? Oh, sweet Jesus!

That's what you eat as your last meal before you go to the electric chair.

Spaceman Spiff said...

FF question:

Trade Chris Chambers for Julius Jones.

The league starts 3 WRs, Chambers is my #3 (chad, marvin). I have Bennet, Jenkins and Toomer on the bench

The league starts 2 RBs. Mine now are Rudi, Westbrook. My back-ups are umm, Rhodes and Barlow and Moats I think.

Should I pull the trigger? At the very least I will wait to see how this concussion thing goes with Chad J first.

It's a deep keeper league.

25-30 players for each team and 10 teams.

I'm gonna hold my breath and hope Westbrook survives the year. if he doesn't then I'll look to trade. Right now I am rockin' 1st place, so I'm not going to mess with what is working.

I will say, though, I think the Bears have a great chance of winning the division, with a defense like theirs how can they not? However, even after putting up a crapload of points the past two weeks I still question the offense's ability to score.

Monday Night football was so boring Sal had to stop watchin' and pay attention to the game his team was playin' in.

Bill Cowher should enhance his jaw by growin' a longer moustache.

I couldn't imagine being a Cubs fan, Sawx for that matter too.

Da Bears need to play some NFL teams before I give them any credit.

temwr said...

With Da Bears I just keep waiting for Grossman's season ending injury. After that happens they are in trouble.

They'll win that division going away though.

MNF was the worst. monday. night. football. game. ever.

BTW I hate when Shanoff does that. I wanted to try it out. It isn't too fun. Not sure why he likes it.

holy effing ess.

hit up Shanoff's blog and hit refresh. how many friggin posts can u do in one day man??? judas, this dude is writing as if he gets paid for it. maybe he's trying to parlay his online following into a job (ie, get a shitload of readers and hopefully someone will take a second look at his resume).

i mean, that's cool that you update so much, cause you definitely dont want the DB alternative, but damn man.. worse ADD than all of us here combined. terrible to follow or get any real discussion going. i bet half his readers just post a thought and move on to a new thread.

i personally like the back and forth like we have here, not just a giant dart board where one guy continually throws ideas out all day....

Isiah Thomas said...

if Pitt would have won, and the total score would have been 32 or less I would have taken the office pool, alas, Roethlisberger crapped the bed.

It was a boring game but had my interest until that final FG.

Isiah Thomas said...

Shanoff is definitely trying to keep up readership and parlay that into another gig.

Kinda surprised no one picked up the DQ/MQ. There are a ton of sport sites out there. He must be taking showers in blee-atch trying to get the stink of failure off him.

temwr said...

It is amazing he doesn't catch on at cbssportsline or the new aol sports thing. He has a lot of readers already.

He must like blogging all day. Maybe his wife rolls in the $$$ and he is a kept man now.

mound of venus said...

question for you guys: who would you start out of the two of these guys this coming week: braylon edwards vs. ravens or jerricho cotchery vs. the bills?

The Rev said...

More lurkers need to come out of the woodwork.

One of them is a babe, and the other one is apparently an overrated backup catcher. Welcome to both!

temwr said...

The crotch.

The ravens will scare Braylon and he will end up with more drops than catches.

The Rev said...

Ladies and gentleman... we have a Mound sighting!

Spaceman Spiff said...

bills defense is looking good, but so is pennington and the jets dont have a running back. browns qb sucks and ravens D is nastier. plus cotchery sounds great, go with him

Isiah Thomas said...

I go with Cotchery, saw a stat that he was getting more looks in the redzone than LA Coles.

Isiah Thomas said...

yeah, Mound, wtf? Welcome back homie.

anonymous said...

im with you on picking up his MQ/DQ thing. or even why the WWL canned him... you would think readers would be drawn to a section with "quick hits" on each days topic. i sure as hell dont sit around and read monster long articles unless they are super interesting (which most arent).

maybe we should start shopping our services to aol and cbs... we could parlay this into a radio gig with the Rev triumphantly leading the way.

Isiah Thomas said...

Did you guys see Steve Smith went to see Dr. Andrews today? That means he's done.

Not to worry... LOV will be prominently mentioned.

i was doing some soul-searching after picking the raiders in that MNF game. they seriously are the worst team i have ever seen in my life. and my memory is long and good. does anyone think they are going to win even one game?

ps--if any of you are into music festivals then you need to come to see the Austin City Limits festival. unbelievably good.

Isiah Thomas said...

just heard Barbaro is still alive, 3 months after his accident.....

haven't they "milked" enough semen out of that horse to put him out of his misery?

The Rev said...

3 people?

You mean my listership tripled?

temwr said...

The problem with the Barbaro thing is that in order for his offspring to qualify for a race (triple crown, other high $$$ races, i.e. be a thouroughbred) he actually has to mount the mare they can't just inject his semen into a mare.

So they need him to get on his feet enough so that he can get up on it, otherwise he is worth far far far far far far far less.

Isiah Thomas said...

tem....I did not know that.

He's prob shooting blanks by now anyway.

I wake up this morning to the news that the Falcons just signed 46 year old Morten Andersen to a 1-year contract, even though their kicker from last year (Todd Peterson) was available and apparently eager to return. I mean I know Morten had some VERY good years here, but am I the only one who is slightly baffled by this move?? I mean I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he wasn't even in the league last year.

And Stiggy, welcome to LOV! It'll be nice to have another sports chick on here. Most of the guys on here are pretty cool, once you get past all the posturing and ball-dipping references. :-)

THE CHAMP. said...

I'll take Anderson over 12 points wasted. As long as they don't need anything over 40 yds kicked the falcons will be fine.

Did you see Mora's face after he missed the 4th one? And did you see him tackle his Linebackers coach? Good stuff.

jugdish said...

Stiggy, I'm right there with ya (Bears Fan). I probably won't be totally convinced until they at least win a play off game (after all, they are the Bears)...but I do like what I have seen so far!

Also...if Grossman does go down, they have Griese, who is totally capable of leading that offense.

Spiff...I saw that about Big Ben's temp last night. Despite that, he still shouldn't have played. It takes longer to recover from that kind of operation, and they did well with Chaz at QB the week before.

Beth82678 said...

Bryan, apparently Morten is only for 40 and under field goals with their current punter/failed experiment still doing the over 40 attempts. He did that last year if I remember right so maybe that'll work out alright. I just hope they got Morten for relatively cheap.

But hey, at least they're trying to fix the problem instead of denying there even is one. That's already better than a lot of past Falcon teams!

And damn, where is everyone today???

temwr said...

The NFL pays people at least a minimum salary and it is based on years of experience.

Morten must cost a ridiculous amount, he has like 30yrs in!

I have no clue why they didn't sign Peterson. He would have had to been cheaper. The only thing I can think of is that Morten is about the pass Gary Andersen for the all time scoring crown (I think). So maybe they want to market that a bit.

It hurt his legacy.

Before the worlds hardly anyone talked about how he is not a solid in game coach. Everyone just said he is awesome and left it at that.

After the worlds people are discussing how he is a bad in game coach, but still a great recruiter. His rep took a hit. I am not sure how anyone can deny that.

Before I picked that game, I would take a Maalox.

This week, we've heard from ElP, me, and Iam. So today, I call on Zeke, Freak, or Mound to step up.
