Suicide Pool - Who's in and who's out Week 1

WHO'S STILL IN...

The Rev - Eagles
Spaceman Spiff - Patriots
Cam - Bears
Temwr87 - Seahawks
Isiah Thomas - Cardinals
Ebntx - Colts
ElPadrino - Chargers
Iamunstopable - Chargers
Thejaywhite - Cardinals
Bryan2857 - Chargers
Los - Cardinals
Keith S - Patriots
Eric - Eagles
Martin Vannostrand - Bengals

WHO'S OUT...

Steve - Panthers
Mound of Venus - Cowboys
Beth82678 - Cowboys
Mr Meiz - Dolphins
Whocares - Buccaneers
Bob Kaelin - Redskins
Hick-Hops - Titans
Jfreak - Browns

GUTSIEST CALL THIS WEEK...
I say it's Ebntx taking the Colts. That was far from a gimmie against the Giants going in. Standing with a tough game in Week 1 takes cajones the size of avocados. Mr. Meiz gets honorable mention for taking the Dolphins in a losing effort. It also takes guts to pick against the defending Super Bowl champs.

KILLER TEAM OF THE WEEK...
Every year in Week 1 of the suicide pools across America, there's the team that everyone picked only to be undone by a shocking upset, and it usually eliminates 50% of the pool. This year, it's not as clear cut. The Cowboys in our pool are the only team that knocked out two players, and I have a feeling many people across America suffered with that. However, how many people do you think got blasted when Carolina lost? I think that was the stunner this year.

BANDWAGON OF THE WEEK...
3 people rode both the Cardinals and Chargers bandwagons this week, so it is a tie. But I give the edge to the Cardinals because it was not as much of a gimmie. I think we all expected the Chargers to dominate. But if anytime was a time to use the Cardinals, it was Week 1. I don' t think the Cardinals will be a sure thing the rest of the way.

Thoughts?

well i am glad i was able to pick something right in a week full of disappointment. next week i will be "back with a vengeance." (not likely)

El Padrino said...

agree, good week to get the Cards out of the way...

this week is going to be easy as the opening lines are out and the Colts -13, Broncs -11, Bolts -10.5
and there's more
Bears, Fins, Bengals

Do the Skins stink or are the Vikes better than what we thought?

Los said...

That's why it was nice to get the Cards out of the way.

Pad - The Skins stink. Not nearly enough weapons on offense (Randle El looked good, though) - the offense line got bullied, and they were exposed defensively (run, run, run, and the Skins will be tired by halftime).

temwr said...

Brad Johnson is DA MAN.

anonymous said...

how bout them Raiders! i know someone said they'd win..

dont make me go back a couple posts and search....

anonymous said...

lets just mention the BLOCKS on Randle El's return. can i get a witness? the Skins laid some people OUT! just damn. some licks were laid.

but too bad the rest of the team sucks.

The Rev said...

I definitely vote for Skins stink. I don't think they have the offense to sustain long drives to keep their defense rested.

I'll say it here... Eagles vs. Giants this week is going to be a slugfest. Anyone with the guts to pick either one of those teams this week will have cajones the size of watermelons.

And now with Lito Sheppard hurt, it just gave the Giants' wideouts one less corner to worry about. That worries me.

I'm looking forward to the game in a big way, but I have the feeling it's going to be one of those games that puts knots in my stomach.

You know, it looks really stupid just to pick the Raiders alone. It looks even worse when you end the pick by suddenly switching to a Spanish word.

The use of "manana" at the end might call for a ball dip. Ruling, Iam?

The Rev said...

Jaywhite...

Nice pick, but be sure to remind me when the official picks page is up on Thursday. That is where it matters.

For the record, I'm looking at the Ravens this week at home vs. those Raiders. But I'm not 100% yet.

temwr said...

So did Simmons' wife outpick him?

If she did I think this bit will end this week.

The Rev said...

By the way...

Mound of Venus gave us a gambling column a week ago as well.

He lost both of those picks... the Giants and the Cowboys.

Saying any team stinks after one week, outside of the Raiders and Packers, is foolish.

Did the Skins look great? No. Are they terrible? No.

If the Skins stink then the Panthers, Broncos and Bucs tie with Oak and GB for the worst teams in the league, because those 3 looked vastly worse than WAS. Its stupid of me to say the Panthers, Broncos and Bucs suck.

This was basically their first preseason game. They were inept in the redzone and that D looked bad. Still with all that they were almost able to tie the game. The Skins have a lot to work on but they don't stink. And since everyone but Philly lost they're not behind the 8 ball yet.

Isiah Thomas said...

MOV was riding my ass for calling TX a lock and going 2-2 in CFB last week. And he was proclaiming his gambling prowess early Sunday also....

But I'm not starting it up again MOV.

Isiah Thomas said...

NE came within one Losman boneheaded play of destroying suicide pools around the country.

AZ was a smart play and leaves us with a lot of flexibility this week.

jugdish said...

The Skins may not stink, but they still suck!

Isiah Thomas said...

And the Skins played all preseason without some of their top D lineman (granted its not the best d line to begin with) and Springs is out after abdominal surgery and they lost their nickel back on the kickoff.

Greg Williams will get the D to play better and the offense will be potent, they showed flashes.

THE CHAMP. said...

I gotta give some credit to the Vikes. They did what they needed to do to win the game. Ran some clock, got the running game started (a little), didn't turn the ball over. Brad Johnson is a good QB, not a superstar, but just a guy that doesn't kill you.

Isiah Thomas said...

Can we get a roll call of who people root for in the NFL?

I know the Rev is with Philly, I'm with WAS, but after that?

Isiah Thomas said...

and Rev they lost by 3 to a team you predicted to win their division....its not like they got blown out by the Packers.

Big Tampa Bay fan here. We got shellacked.

jugdish said...

Every team has some injuries, guys have to step up...plain and simple. The Skins weren't expected to be that good after that preseason. I think the jury is still out on the Vikings. As far as the Skins go, I say if they have a 50/50 shot to make the playoffs...play the young kid.

The Rev said...

I did a rundown just now. I got the Sports Guy at 7-8 and the Sports Gal at 4-11.

jugdish said...

Da Bearsss!

temwr said...

Also, did anyone else notice that Theismann was very quiet last night? He started off by pretty much openly rooting for the Skins. Then he shut up for about the middle 2 quarters of the game. I didn't watch the end because I decided that tonight(yesterday) was not the night that TK and JT fought in the booth.

Isiah Thomas said...

thats the one thought I had as soon as Hall missed that kick...

losing games like that is what keeps teams out of the playoffs...

Isiah Thomas said...

that was a tough opening game for TK and JT to be a part of. Both are Washington institutions. Its obvious they both have rooting interests in the Skins and they did seem a bit down after the Skins started to poo poo the game away.

I think TK will be pretty good in the booth.

I thought it was funny when Jamie Foxx kept calling Kornheiser "TC".

Cornheiser. HA.

El Padrino said...

GIANTS!

my take on the skins is this:

yes they'll be better but as i said in my preview (on my page a couple of posts back) I think they are nothing more than an 8-8 team. Possibly 9-7 but that won't be enough to make the playoffs this year. Oh and Brunell sucks ass.
Please don't defend that statement.

The Rev said...

I'm rethinking that Vikings division pick. In fact, I think I'm rethinking half the picks I made. In that division, I may concede the Bears being better than I thought.

But I agree. The Skins lost to a decent team in their building.

Maybe stink is not the right word. But you have to agree on this. In the NFC East this year, falling behind early will spell doom. And the Skins are looking at the real possibility of going down 0-2 with a division loss pinned to them next week.

I know it's early, but those things matter in a 16 game season.

temwr said...

Don't read too much into the Bears beating the Pack. To quote or at least paraphrase Favre.

"maybe we just ain't that good"

The Rev said...

That Tom Jackson clip is classic!

Eric said...

I think you can put me in the Redskins don't stink camp. They had some costly penalties and they failed to execute in the redzone, that's all. The defense played well in my opinion. 2.5 yards per rush seems pretty good to me, especially considering how they talked all night up how awesome the Vikings O line is, the only lapses were the 2 or 3 times Rumph and Kenny Wright got beat for big plays and they have a pro bowl corner back on the sidelines who will be back in a week or two to fix that.

Clinton Portis only had 10 carries. Rev pointed out that it didn't look like they could sustain drives consistently, well I think that problem is solved when they let Portis loose next week. They had the ball with first and goal 3 times and came up with 3 field goals, if one of those is a touchdown they win, to me that the only kink that needs to be worked out.

Basically what I'm saying is I think the Redskins will be fine.

Isiah Thomas said...

Of course they matter and 0-2 is a distinct possibility, which is something you don't want to have happen.

I think Philly has the easiest sched in the division, but they are all pretty tough.

The Giants play at Phi, and at Sea in the next two weeks. They could be staring at 0-3. 8-8 or 9-7 might just win that division.

El Padrino said...

Bears are just as dominant on D as they were last year...the schedule is pre-k and Grossman is going to get better (decen backup in Griese if not)

Remember they need to get it done in January cuz they will be there.
Hell they won 13 last year with Kyle Orton as the QB!!!

jugdish said...

My take on the Bears...as impartial as I can be being a fan...their defense is there. They are one of the best in the NFL, but their offense is suspect as always. Rex hasn't played much in his whole NFL career so he is still an unknown. I have a feeling we will see Griese before the season ends as the regular starter. I think the offense will be better under him. They have a pretty good group of receivers and a promising running game. I'm just anxious for the games against teams like seattle to see how they do. I know their schedule is easy, but with that said...division games are always tougher regardless of the records because the teams know each other so well.

The Rev said...

I think someone in the NFC East gets to 10 wins.

The winner of the Giants and Eagles game this week might give us an early indication who will do it.

anonymous said...

i love the nagging of Kornheiser. joe seems to wanna kiss old NFL ass.. it's as if he doesnt wanna say anything bad/negative about people because he might see em at some after party. 'TC' however just says what he's thinking and it seems to be what maybe Joe Average would be saying, which is exactly why they put him there.

JT must've taught at whatever school jaywhite's went to, cause he seems to think that only ex-players have worthy opinions. i hate listening to his pompous ass.

TC's position on the Taylor hit for a penalty... Refs are human, refs hold grudges, they know a player's history.. JT wouldnt admit that there is a CHANCE that the ref's wouldve called that just based on Taylor's history.. but TC stuck to his guns until he agreed.

its not saying that the refs were throwing the game or calling plays for either side.. just saying that someone like Taylor has a history of big hits, and it POSSIBLY couldve been in the back of the ref's mind. i agree with him.

so to recap - Theismann is a huge douche and i dip my balls on him.

THE CHAMP. said...

Isaiah, they weren't calling Kornheiser TC!!!!!!!!!! they were talking about TOM CRUISE!

I suspect a team that is 0-3 will rebound and make the playoffs this year. It will be a great story.

Spaceman Spiff said...

skins didnt get run over, chester taylor averaged less than 3 yards a carry, would you call that successful? No stopping on 3rd down killed them. dink and dunk offense wasnt great either.

JFreak said...

I just want to let the record show, that if I had actually been able to pick a real game, I would not be out.

As far as the Redskins are concerned. I think they showed that the preseason does mean something. 700 page playbooks don't mean a thing if you can't execute.

I'm not sure who is worse, Oakland or Green Bay.

I'm a Colts fan.

Isiah Thomas said...

Eli didn't play well when it mattered Sunday and he's still not there. Tiki will save that team, pray he doesn't get injured.

And the Bears D....

We heard the same song and dance last year about this team. "One of the all time greats..." then they get straight ball dipped repeatedly AT HOME by Steve Smith and the Panthers.

temwr said...

Also did anyone else catch this:

During the WAS/MIN game they went to the announcers that were going to do the SD/OAK game and those announcers were talking about LTs carries in previous games at OAK and someone said it was like 37, 32, 27 and the other announcer said something like "those are good figures and they'd be good on a woman too."

And all I am thinking is that 37, 32, 27 would look somewhat stupid on a girl.

Isiah Thomas said...

You can't chalk up road games against playoff teams as automatic W's also.....esp when your QB proves he still craps the bed in big games in crucial moments...

Isiah Thomas said...

JFreak said...

I want to give Rev some props on a good fantasy game. Only won by two points.

They also put up points against the Panthers, and I believe their offense will be better this year. If the Ravens can win the Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer, and the Bucs with Brad Johnson...then anything is possible.

No, it is impossible that the Titans win the Super Bowl with Kerry Collins.

El Padrino said...

He also wouldn't have thrown that pick if he would have thrown to an open receiver...or if they would have called a run. Or is Peyton was the QB.

true, the Giants are the only team to suffer from a bad call in the history of sports....

you can do coulda/shoulda/woulda's all day, the point is he threw a terrible pass.

And old man Brunnell took the Skins just as far as the NYG last season...

Isiah Thomas said...

and if you want to talk terrible calls the first unsportsmanlike against Convict #21 was horrible. The receiver was in the act of trying to catch it when he got hit. TK was right on that one, Taylor's rep got him.

Then Minn has a similar if not worse play in the last 30 seconds and no flag.

IF they woulda called that the FG would have been what 33 yds?

I saw Eli Manning play at the Music City bowl when Ole Miss played WVU quite some time ago. WVU was kicking the crap out of Ole Miss, so they put some crappy freshman in at QB. He almost brought them all the way back. He is a good QB.

Of course must ball busting still must be done because his team lost. And all losses are entirely the QBs fault.

jugdish said...

No, but he'd rather have Brunell dip his balls on him than Eli. Eli's balls just would get intercepted anyways.

Isiah Thomas said...

good point spiff, get the extra yard and maybe you can take one last shot, don't be a pussy and go out of bounds a foot short, lower your shoulder and get the 1st down.

I'll take Campbell over Eli. Even Giants fans have to admit Eli is overrated.

Isiah Thomas said...

Spaceman Spiff said...

the 15 year is guaranteed even if he gets hurt

JFreak said...

Cooper had a degenerative spinal condition that if he had continued playing football he could have ended up paralized. He was a pretty decent WR in his own day, and probably would have made it in the NFL, if only for his last name.

Martin VanNostrand said...

Eli is a pretty good QB. He seems to have more potential than Carr in my opinion. I will admit I have not seen as many Houston games though so my observations could be skewed. "Lets give beth another shot at this..I think its only fair shes still just learning the game and knows less than about football than a dirty condom "

This is the front runner for comment of the year so far.

Hey, I'm not asking for any special circumstances on the suicide pool and while I appreciate the (misguided) gesture I couldn't in good faith accept it even if offered (which it shouldn't be). Hell, I'd be the first one screaming bloody murder if I was in still in the pool and the rev and/or isiah was out and it was agreed to give them a second chance just cause of their "unusually close relationship". :-)

And thejaywhite, if your blog is to be believed (a big if btw), then I'd think you'd know more about dirty condoms than me. (You do realize if you turn them inside out you can re-use them, right?)

plus as far as i know there are no "fantasy" std's

Beth82678 said...

It's not THEM I'd worry about being diseased...

Beth82678 said...

Now now ebntx, that's not fair. There are such thing as rashes on your palms you know...

Hahaha, classic.

I read TMQB. It takes forever to read and I pretty much skip over half of it.

temwr said...

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2584380

Is this even legal?

Isiah Thomas said...

I'll put in the time to read MMQB anything else out there that is a quality NFL read on Monday's?

The Rev said...

You can be tossed out of many ballparks for excessive swearing at Major League Baseball stadiums, so yes this could be legal.

However, if they crack down on the old reliable "BULL-SHIT" chant, I would be pissed at that. There's nothing like a well-timed "BULL-SHIT" chant.

Spaceman Spiff said...

beth, if youre not worried about them having diseases, how is thejaywhite going to get one?

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Eva Longoria says she's done with television after Desperate Housewives ends.
The 31-year-old actress said she loves the medium of television and the routine it provides, but that Housewives will be her last series.
-- USA Today

I haven't watched one minute of Desperate Housewives and had no clue who Longoria was till this show came out. Now she's calling her shots? She'll be in playboy within 2 years trying to resusitate her career.

Beth82678 said...

Spiff, don't try and confuse a blonde with logic, it's just not right.

Since when does it have to be Democrat?

Last I checked, the Republicans were all about the censorship.

George W Bush is the one who wants to fine broadcasters $350,000 if they say fuck by accident on the air.

Isiah Thomas said...

PC = Democrat.

The Rev said...

Censorship = Republican

Isiah Thomas said...

its too easy to get democrats fired up...

Beth82678 said...

I'm with the Rev on this one, that move sounds way more Republican than Democrat. It's the religious right hard at work.

jugdish said...

That's right Zeke...if it was a Democrat story...they'd have an ACLU rep down at each stadium defending everyone's rights to curse as loud and as often as they wanted.

Isiah Thomas said...

on broadcast tv you shouldn't be able to say fuck, for fuck's sake.

Isiah Thomas said...

1/2 the ACLU would be there defending the right to say fuck, and the other 1/2 would be there defending the right to not have to listen to it.

anonymous said...

Theissman is the government.. he's bringing us down, and he wont let us drill for oil.

time to rise up, peeps.

The Rev said...

I agree you shouldn't be able to say fuck on broadcast TV.

But it ain't worth $350,000.

ebntx said...

longoria is a 'tard. i live in her hometown and had never heard of her either until that show came out. people don't even talk about her here...well in a good way.

btw...she is still hot to look at.

The Rev said...

I'm a liberal, not a Democrat.

Get it right, Zeke.

I register independent.

THE CHAMP. said...

"take it up the ass Middle-East"

new nominee for coment of the year.

although we'll probably have the great idea of outscourcing hydrogen production to Afghanistan just to help them "rebuild".

The Rev said...

Joe Theismann doesn't want you to say fuck.

THE CHAMP. said...

longoria already did maxim this month. playboy is the next logical step. or skinemax.

Isiah Thomas said...

thats seriously the democrat's way - point fingers and blame it on the republicans.

jugdish said...

That 350,000 is to help insure that those "accidents" don't happen. Besides, $350,000 is nothing for these TV companies.

The Rev said...

Right... but that same $350,000 fine could apply to a small radio station that is not owned buy a big company. In that case, it is outrageous.

Isiah Thomas said...

who gives a fuck if some owl dies or loses a tree to nest in?

Drill for oil anywhere, I'm tired of $3.00/gal.

jugdish said...

You better watch your mouth then.

jugdish said...

Our gas prices in Houston have dropped about 70 cents over the last few weeks and have been falling. Good times...but these oil companies owe us about a year of 99 cents a gallon!

The Rev said...

Janet Jackson's tit ruined everything!

jugdish said...

Can you say tit on network TV? You can say asshole.

Where are George Carlins 7 dirty words when you need them?

The Rev said...

I'm paying $2.50 a gallon, and I'm actually happy about that.

They have us brainwashed into thinking $2.50 a gallon is cheap.

THE CHAMP. said...

they just found a new oil source in the gulf of mexico and hydrogen plants are being built in NY and Kansas City.

as soon as that oil well in the gulf is up and running gas should drop below $2/gallon.

The Rev said...

I remember 79 cents a gallon in the Clinton years.

Good times!

Spaceman Spiff said...

they not gonna be getting anything from teh gulf for at least a year i saw on news

THE CHAMP. said...

the first tank of gas I bought cost me .90/gallon.

I remember in college a kid from SC talking about it being .68/gallon. and that was only about 4 years ago.

The Rev said...

Shit
Piss
Fuck
Cocksucker
Motherfucker
Tits
Cunt

Those are Carlin's 7 dirty words. So by that rule, tits would not be allowed on network TV.

THE CHAMP. said...

they won't get anything from the gulf, but it will make the arabs rethink their prices.

The US needs to invest in bullet trains and run them across america.

The Rev said...

Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back...

I know my Carlin quotes!

was anybody else watching the transition between the games last night? brad nessler, dick vermeil, and Jaws and his hideous glases were there .. anyways, so they throw to the old coach, and im waiting for him to choke up and cry a little..

and he talks about the Raiders and how the attitude is different now with Art Shell back.. and he says "well, theyre workin hard, and theres been some bitchin' around here."

then Nessler takes the cue and says, "well, lets see if theyre still bitching after tonight", then transitioned over to Jaws..

i realize "bitchin" aint all that bad, but to hear it twice on national tv, with one coming from Mr. Super-Announcer-Nessler, it was funny.

anonymous said...

and let's at least MENTION Bill Hicks in this best-ever convo. any list without him aint a real list.

Martin VanNostrand said...

I started driving in 1992 and it was like 75 cents a gallon. Sometimes in the 60's if a place was just opening up and doing a promotion.

What was everybodys first whip? I had a 1980 Cutlass Supreme. 2 door with the vinyl top over the back 1/3rd of the roof. Ghetto Sled.

temwr said...

well i wasn't making a list, especially seeing as I only typed out 3 names. so just pretend I typed Hick's in there instead of murphy.

anonymous said...

yeah, i was just throwing Hicks out there before it became a pissing contest and he became overlooked...

The Rev said...

My first car...

74 Dodge Dart, white with a beige top.

The damn thing got like 10 miles a gallon on the highway. I still loved it!

Martin VanNostrand said...

The Dodge Dart, that is rad. My cutlass got crappy mpg too. I could literally see the needle move down if floored it. Which was strange because it was only average in the get up and go dept. Just thirsty I guess. That car had a ton of play in the steering wheel too.

JFreak said...

My first car was a red 1991 Ford Taurus. I had it for a year in 2004, and then the transmission crapped out. Good car. Good memories.

The Rev said...

Best standup comics ever...

Richard Pryor
George Carlin
Eddie Murphy (when he was funny)
Bill Hicks
Rodney Dangerfield
Sam Kinison

I might even put Andrew Dice Clay up there. Anyone who could sell out an arena is big-time in my book. It's about putting asses in the seats, and Dice was the best at it for a stretch.

temwr said...

Jerry Porter was seen laughing on the sidelines at his team as Aaron Brooks got sacked for a 7th time.

Well, he shouldn't be laughing at how bad his team is, but you have to admit, Aaron Brooks is funny. Especially when you think of the "Aaron Brooks" glitch in European Madden.

temwr said...

1st car 1982 RX-7. I got it in 1997. Best comic convo starts and ends with Carlin, the rest are just there.

temwr said...

And if anyone brings up Gallagher, Carrot Top, or Louis Anderson in the best comic convo they get a ball dipping. Sinbad is acceptable though because he was in Necessary Roughness, which is the best football comedy ever made.

anonymous said...

Rev, if putting asses in the seats equals talent level, then all the 'white trash hick guys' today are comedy gods.

homie dont play that game.

The Rev said...

I've seen two Gallagher shows in person in my lifetime.

The Rev said...

But that is what stand up comedy is about.

If less people come out to your shows, you make less money and get less laughs.

temwr said...

You can see them, I have seen 1, but you can't put him on that list.

IAM- Foxworthy is probably top 5 or top 7. He is freakin' hilarious and has been at the top of his game for a long long time. The other ones are just flashes in the pan.
