Roid Rage, The Return of the King and a No-No

Roid Rage

A story I saw late last night got me to thinking, which can be a very dangerous thing. News that Marion Jones “B” sample was clear of any PED’s broke late last night. So while I guess that clears her name there is enough smoke there that you’d have to be pretty naïve to think she is clean. Evidence shows that her ex-husband and baby daddy both used PED’s and her trainer has deep roots in them as well. And we all know her ties to BALCO. Combine her initial positive test with Floyd Landis’s test and the NFL/MLB player de jour who tests positive and it makes you think how clean are sports really? Are the people we cheer and boo clean at all? Is it all a huge travishamockery? Nearly every major sport has had some sort of brush with PED’s in the last few years. Bonds, Mcquire, Sosa, Palmeiro in MLB, the Carolina Panthers (a story that has flown under the radar) in the NFL, Justin Gatlin and Marion Jones in T&F, Floyd Landis in cycling and Amelie Mauresmo in tennis. Alright, maybe Mauresmo isn’t on roids but she definitely has a set if you know what I mean.

Being a fan in this “steroid” era is pretty sad. You can’t watch a great performance without thinking that the athletes are clean. Will this skepticism hurt sports? Doubtful as media outlets like ESPN and the like will always find something sports related to shove down our throats and tell us what to like and what to watch and cheer for. I think in this day and age there shouldn’t be any reason that we can’t come up with comprehensive testing and ways to clean things up. I don’t think we’re far away from adopting a zero tolerance policy for all sports. While I love my middle linebackers big and fast so they can decleat someone and want to see Ryan Howard crush another HR, I’d like to be able to sit back and watch and know I’m watching God given talent and not something that has been injected into their heinies. Or maybe just legalize everything and just tell us the truth.

The King is Back

Ah yes, the NFL regular season starts today. The King of all sports is finally back. Miami is at Pittsburgh today in the first game of what is sure to be an exciting season. I put some cashe money on the Stillers seeing that they are a 1 point dog at home. Even without Big Ben I think they will win, we’ll see. Its just good to have an old friend back. Let the meat head announcing begin.

Dirty Sanchez No Hitter

Anibal Sanchez pitched a no-hitter for the Marlins last night against the D-Backs. I watched the replay here and he had some good stuff and benefited from great defense. By the fourth inning you got the sense something special was happening. Sawx fans must be cringing from seeing this. Way to go Theo. Is the honeymoon over for him, his moves the last two seasons have really, really, really sucked.

steroid testing is a joke. they clearly define what they can test for and what they cant.. and the players union fights for these stipulations to "protect the player". this is a blatantly obvious way of saying "we're doing this for a show", because that makes them all look guilty. if everyone was serious about having clean sports they would just set a zero tolerance and kick people out.

the most pathetic thing about doping in sports is the fact that everybody tries to fake like the sports are clean. if u REALLY wanted them clean, they would clean em up and get a real policy. they want their revenue though, so they try to at least ACT like they have a system in place.

kind of like.. i have one buddy on probation, but he calls in each week to see if his color has been called.. if yellow was called that week, then he tests.. if not, then he smokes out cause he knows he can get clean real quick.

the system is a joke, yet the saddest part is that they still try to sell it to us like its not.

that said, they should just legalize everything and let the entertainment begin...

ebntx said...

good point iam-
write it into contracts that if you get busted you are out of the league and you have to payback your salary already paid to you for that contract. that should get people to thinking if it is really worth it.

THE CHAMP. said...

Legalize. Let people do to their bodies what they want. When they start dying at 35 people will start to understand and the use will decline. You will never be able to clean up everything. There will always be a new designer steroid or PED. They can only test for what they know about.

I love the NFL. I love the hype, the cockiness of everyone involved. I work for the second greatest receiver of all time. (guess who?) He's the cockiest (but nicest) guy I know. Talking to him about the upcoming season gets me so excited.

i dont want to inflict them on anybody else.

any other team, that's a good idea (KC Royals, 49ers), but with the Lions youre just gonna have to wipe them out and start all over.

clean house and when youre done, disinfect it too.

Do you really care if your sports figures take juice? I dont ..makes no difference to me...theyre all still playing the game and I think 95%+ are doing it anyways so theres no unfair advantage. Bonds (along with griffey) was the best in the game in the 90s and hes the best this decade (this year excluding)..so whats the difference

How bout bill simmons saying ewing theory for TO leaving the eagles ..NO WAY..TO was the mvp of that superbowl and is a great player....if he played last season eagles woulda won 9+. He makes his teams better its just a matter of how long you can stand to be around the guy.

need to mention Theo wasn't the "GM" in title when the sanchez/ramirez for Lowell/Beckett trade was made but I think he was an advisor. Still, his GM-ship since they won has been bad.

The honeymoon will never be totally over for Theo. Sox fans will always love him for 2004.

However, I know for a fact that the fans are going back to complaining about the team again. And they view Theo as more of a human now than as God. The shine is off the star for sure.

anonymous said...

as much as im sick of hearing about the red sox in general.. this year cannot be blamed on any one person. its been injury after injury for them this last half here.. theyve been hit with bad luck and are playing with a patchwork team.

Steriods: I don't even care any more. I just don't. I'm not making an argument for or against. Everybody's on something. HGH isn't detectable, greenies are in every locker room. Red Bull is free, etc. etc. etc. Who gives a fuck!?

The Rev said...

I agree with one thing...

If TO had played the season with the Eagles, they would have been a better team.

But I don't know about 9 wins. Don't forget how McNabb was hurting all year. TO would not have done well with Mike McMahon throwing him the ball at the end of the season.

As far as MVP of the Super Bowl, yes he may have been. However, it was obvious on more than one play that TO lost a step in that game. There was one play that a healthy TO would have out run someone for a TD. But the less than 100% TO gets tackled at the 20. That TD would have made a difference in the game.

Ewing Theory could still apply.

ebntx said...

maybe i missed this..what were your original feelings on to coming out of san fran?

i'm from texas and will always remember the whole spiking on the star game. i am not completely sold on him. of course he is a great player that it is undeniable, but is he worth all the trouble he brings with him? the minute he makes the first td a lot of people will love him. i just hope if he blows up it happens in the offseason, but who am i kidding.

as a fellow Texan, still upset about the Star, I expect some sort action to make up for it on his first TD

temwr said...

Too much TO talk.

Let's talk about who you take in a suicide pool for week 1.

My pick is Seattle or New England.

Any other thoughts?

Isiah Thomas said...

I've been going back and forth on my suicide pick.

I might roll the dice with the AZ Cards (they play at home vs SF).

Try and save the heavyweights for later on in the season.

temwr said...

I like to use the heavyweights early so that I stay in.

I just don't know enough about the other teams to feel safe picking them. After I see them play a couple weeks a lot of questions are answered. So I got with teams that I feel have less questions early on.

Of course now that I said that both NE and SEA will lose.

The Rev said...

In a suicide pool, I'm actually going homer first week. I think the Eagles steamroll the Texans. I'm not confident enough to use the Eagles any other week, so I go first week with them.

El Padrino said...

New England
of Eagles

remember SF beat the rams last year
about 2,000,000 people got knocked out the first week because of that

if your going to "roll the dice"
do with the eagles in Houston or San Diego at Oakland

Los said...

If the leagues can't police themselves correctly, at this point they may as well let everyone use steroids ... I'm sick of arguing and complaining about it, and basically having the leagues laugh in our collective faces. Ugh!

The Rev said...

My thoughts on TO when he first went from San Fran to Philly...

I'll admit it. I was happier than a pig in slop. In 2004, I was a huge TO fan. I got his first book signed and everything (although not in person). And everything he did in 2004 made me love him as a player. And all of Philadelphia was with me. He made us incredibly happy for one season.

Really, you had to experience those games as they happened and the run of dominance the Eagles went on with him in the lineup. I never saw an Eagles team that dominant in my life. They were scary with him on the team. And even when he got hurt, they built up so much confidence by that point that they rolled into the Super Bowl without him on that swagger alone. (Which by the way was the blow to TO's ego that started the mess... he hated the fact that the team felt they could get there without him. He admitted that.)

In 2005, he collectively pissed on us all. I never saw so much betrayal of fan loyalty in my life. It was unbelievable, even for him. Whatever happened in San Fran never compared to what he did in Philly.

Honestly, after 2004 and what he did for us, TO could have been elected mayor of Philadelphia. He was that popular. And then he ruined that.

I can't think of any athlete who did more to ruin his own image in a city. Now, he's dead to most of us (there's still a few stragglers who defend TO over McNabb in this town, though I will never understand that).

Believe me... there's a part of us that is upset that he's in Dallas because we know you bastards might get a great year out of him and kill us in 2006 (and by the way... words can not express how much Philadelphia hates the Dallas Cowboys).

But at the same time, we are so happy he's there. Because it gives us an even better reason to hate the Cowboys if we ever needed one. And at the same time, we know he's going to do to Dallas what he did to us at some point. And we will point and laugh.

I don't have much to say. That's why I didn't volunteer to be a contributor. I just thought it was interesting that you guys started this thing as a place where the same sports stories weren't written over and over again. Yet, that's what's happened.

Regurgitating Simmons' column doesn't count as new stuff. If you want something good to read look up Chuck Klosterman. He's closer to what Simmons used to be.

Also thought I could hate in here without repercusions.....just sayin.

Ewing theory cant apply...

HE MADE THE TEAM BETTER WHEN HE WAS THERE!.

And TO is not a speed burner hes gotten caught frombehind before when healthy. Now if Moss were to get caught from behind it would be a surprise. As Moss is actually a burner and one of the top tne fastest guys in the league. Or atleast CAPABLE of being top ten, hes been hurt a bit lately and you never know how that impacts one.

THE CHAMP. said...

Forget about all the off field stuff, given the chance to have TO, Moss, or Steve Smith, who would you take? For sake of argument let's say you only have to have him for one year.

temwr said...

The Ewing theory most certainly can apply. Of course he made the team better, it is supposed to be when a good player (read: one who makes the team better) leaves his team and then the team actually gets better, when you'd expect for the team to get worse.

Are you saying Ewing didn't make the Knicks better?

El Padrino said...

T.O

because he's a deep threat and a possession receiver

Moss, for my money, is only a deep threat

THE CHAMP. said...

This is where the Ewing Theory falls apart.

If a guy supposedly made the team better, why did they win more when he left? If the team didn't win while he was there how is that being better?

The Rev said...

I would take a healthy TO over a healthy one of any of those three in pure skill. I'll admit it.

Ewing Theory totally applies. But not only did he make the team better when he played, he also brought it down while he was still employed by the team. Both extremes apply to TO with the Eagles.

thejaywhite said...

Id go TO, MOSS, and smith isnt even on my radad for who I would want next. I could name 5-10 guys Id rather have.

Players like Chad Johnson, Roy Williams, LArry Fitzgerald, Tory holt, Marvin HArrisin(although I also think hes overrated and beneftis from Peyton more than we admit), Andre Johnson. Smith falls next in line for me wiht guys like Anquion boldin

The Rev said...

Ewing Theory really applies when someone who universally is regarded as a superstar leaves, and the team wins without him after he leaves. They could have been a winning team with him, but they became a better winning team without him. Or they could be a losing team with him, then a winning team without him.

By the way... this has never applied to the Philadelphia 76ers. They trade superstars, they suck for three years.

Beth82678 said...

Bryan2857, I learned from personal experience if you comment about poeple's obsession with KC around here you get attacked, so welcome to the club.

But I agree with you, this blog is so much more fun and interesting when original topics were being discussed instead of mostly hating on KC, that's one of the reasons I pretty much quit posting here.

And yes, I expect to have "repercussions" for posting this viewpoint again...

The Rev said...

Maybe a few of those I agree with. Chad Johnson, yes. Larry Fitzgerals, yes. Even holt and Harrison, yes.

But Roy Williams over Steve Smith? Are you crazy?

I give you the first guest column here, and you stop posting here because of too much KC hating?

Sorry... that's pretty weak.

Does too much of one topic really bother some of you? You should know by now that we change topics here often in threads, or keep two or three going at one time. That's always the way it is.

It's like weather in New England. If you don't like it, wait a minute.

In this case, if you don't like too much KC or too much TO, feel free to post something in another direction or hang around until it changes. It always does.

It's the beauty of a lawless society. If you don't like the direction of a thread, instead of bitching about it, try to post something new. If we like it, we will go with it.

This isn't hard. It ain't brain surgery.

I've been waiting for people to lay off KC and get to a subject that seemed more interesting. (And yeah, I know I know, I could always try to start a new one myself.) It was funny at first (and how did I know that the funniest ones had to be from iam - maybe it's the fact that his pic is from a great show) but now it just reminds me of a bunch of 13 year olds trying to outdo the others with how crude they can get.

And isiah, using thejaywhite's (twisted) reasoning that unless you've participated in higher level sports you can't fully understand or comment on pro sports, you shouldn't be allowed to call me "lick-a-lot-a-puss" since from your posts it's clear that you don't have experience in that department. I picked Vick in the 6th round in my money league last night and I'm pretty unhappy about it. He was really the best QB available at the time though...I always said I would never pick him too. I'm still not happy about that.

survivor - whats the over/under week that the white people take over and start slave trading the others?

yes i said it.

THE CHAMP. said...

Yeah of course this is what survivor wanted. That's what ALL network shows want...hype. That's why CSI has "ripped from the headlines" type stuff. That's why the roast of will shatner had andy dick licking people. It's a show not a national election.

THE CHAMP. said...

damn you for taking my joke IAM.

I'm going to cut and paste the email now.

thejaywhite said...

NIce this is the first I heard of racist survivor I love it..and in this day and age race shouldnt matter so this shouldnt be a big deal. This should be as simple as whites against the darks on the playground when dividing by shirt colors.

Isiah Thomas said...

forgot to mention this in my original post, if ESPN needs to stop promoting Grey's Anatomy....

I saw too many ads for it the other day. I get the synergy of the networks and all but enough is enough.

I've never seen the show but it looks queer enough as is.

THE CHAMP. said...

they were worried about segregation issues.....
i think the asians will win
they'll repopulate the island in a week
by the end of the game their island will be the 5th largest country in the world
and they'll be the most tech. advanced
the white people will try to get the black people to work for them and pay to watch them play in the challenges
black people will dominate the challenges
and the hispanics will clean up after everything is over.

Isiah Thomas said...

I wish Reggie White were alive to comment about the Survivor idea...

RIP #92.

anonymous said...

zing!!

THE CHAMP. said...

I hope the challenges are racially motivated too...

who can put together this cell phone?

who can dunk a basketball?

who can force people off of their land and do it under the name of "freedom"?

Isiah Thomas said...

if CBS wants publicity they will call it as thejaywhite said "racist survivor"

Jim Nance : "nice run by LJ, and folks don't forget to check out....RACIST Survivor every Thursday on America's most watched network...."

thejaywhite said...

no the spanish will just park on everyones lawn and play loud music

thejaywhite said...

I agree I will watch my 1st survivor since survivor allstar...when does this one begin

Isiah Thomas said...

I just heard the Jets are at 6 for the over/under in wins...take the under people.

new survivor starts a week from today

Cam said...

The latinos will be too tired from cleaning the white camp and doing their laundry to compete in the challenges.

THE CHAMP. said...

How is it racist?

The Rev said...

Of course I'm the bleeding heart liberal here, and I got something to say about Survivor.

It ain't no big deal to me.

I mean, it's not like the teams won't all merge into different tribes by week 6, then into one tribe by week 12. These tribes won't even exist anymore after the first several shows. So big whoop-dee-do!

This is the reality TV equivalent of shirts vs. skins to me.

And it's also a desperate attempt by a reality show franchise that was more relevant 4 years ago to stay in the headlines. It worked.

Isiah Thomas said...

its not racist bryan, thejaywhite dubbed it "racist survivor" which I think is a brilliant marketing strategy for CBS to use.

thejaywhite said...

REally its no different anyways the black people ALWAYS vote the same way anyways..fuck i just started school again its the same way..people go with whats familiar..blacks sit with blacks even if they dont know each toher..old people with old people....fat chics with fat chics....nothing changes

THE CHAMP. said...

Rev. aren't the liberals the one's running the ACLU? I think this means you lean toward conservative on this one.

THE CHAMP. said...

oh ok Isaiah, I was just making sure we were on the same page.

I already had that argument with a coworker.

The Rev said...

I'm only gonna watch it because my fiancee watches it and I'm too lazy to fight over the TV.

It is my "take it for the team" program.

THE CHAMP. said...

make it interesting. place a bet with your girlfriend on who's going to win. each of you pick 2 races.

Isiah Thomas said...

Survivor is still quality programming, its the Godfather of reality tv. You're all wet here Rev.

once my girl moved in I immediately got another DVR for the tv in the other room. That's a must have.

Bryan... no, not necessarily.

I just think there are far bigger problems racially in this world than a reality show just trying to shake things up.

On a scale of 1-10, this ranks about a 1.5 in the racism debate to me.

And as far as the ACLU goes, they do exist for a reason, but they need publicity too. I realize that.

thejaywhite said...

Nice i love clarrett news..i wanna see the over under on the years he will get (TOTAL for all crimes)

I would set it at 8.5
but I think the over under on when he gets paroled is 4.0

Isiah Thomas said...

the ACLU exists to give devil worshippers a voice.

Isiah Thomas said...

he'll get shanked in jail and die in 2.5 yrs.

ebntx said...

steve-
it's not called being whipped. it's called planning for the future..."if i piss her off this late in the evening, i may not get any later."

got your back rev.

The Rev said...

Oh, I got two more TV's in the other rooms. I'm just too lazy to move from the couch.

Yeah, I might be whipped. But I've always said that if you're gonna be whipped by anything, it might as well be poon. Them real whips hurt more.

THE CHAMP. said...

haha I think i got Isaiah and Rev. to disagree.

Survivor is the only quality reality show. At least it has some athletic/sports type events. And there are places to bet on it.

The Rev said...

ebntx...

Damn skippy!

The Rev said...

Survivor ain't bad, but it ain't no Flavor of Love!

Beth82678 said...

Personally, I think The Amazing Race has all the reality shows beat. Where else do they always cast the most flaming gay couple they can find for everyone to laugh at?

in totally random news.. did anyone see a video of some football parent socking a little player? i saw this headline and story online, but i cant view video at work, and its not like i watch the news..

but anyways, kid A hit kid B after the whistle (apparently hard enough to leave bruises on him). parent of kid B charges onto field and knocks him down, large brawl ensues.

good times! nothing like living your life through your child.. the stench of failure resumes...

Beth82678 said...

Actually Steve, all women have met men LIKE thejaywhite - who are convinced they are god's gift to women.

i say this from my soapbox.

The lesson as always is that iam is a eff up.

I can not imagine what Detriot is going to do to the coach that was busted driving naked.

Millen was probably in the trunk tied up with an apple in his mouth, so the guy will probably get suspended and put on special duty in Millen's office.

doesn't this just mean that the drug users are getting older? I know i'm getting older.

temwr said...

They might be talking about drafting Calvin whatever from Georgia Tech.

Someone else said it in an earlier post, but that guy is guaranteed to be Detroits number 1 pick.

THE CHAMP. said...

No he's actually a good receiver. Detroit only drafts WR that over-hyped but not good.

Whitlock's 10 thruths are up for week 1...

say what you will about him but I like these articles.

Martin VanNostrand said...

iam - I saw that video too on the CNN page. The kid who made the late hit was twice the size of the other kid but it wasn't that bad. Dude did like Zeke said and ran on the pitch delivering a bow or fore arm to the bigger kid. Then they said he jumped a fence and took off. More inportantly there was an alleged 20 minute altercation on the field following all this but no video of that. What's up with that?

Spaceman Spiff said...

i hate those letters that whitlock writes to himself that are supposed to be from halle berry and beyonce, etc.

whitlock is a moron. Just another writer that makes crazy statements to get attention. he makes 10 a week and about 4 of them come true. then he parades those 4 around like he's god to football.

he was a fat lineman at ball state. that's worse than playing just high school.

The Rev said...

Just saw the video. Yeah, that was an open field smackdown if I ever saw one.

That guy should get teabagged by Iam for his indiscretion.

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- An 11-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by as many as 20 boys as a 16-year-old girl watched and told her what sex acts to perform, authorities say in the latest mob attack to rock Milwaukee and set off another round of civic soul-searching. --cnn.com

Meiz - what the fuck is wrong with your city?

THE CHAMP. said...

I went to school in madison. Milwaukee is just crazy. I bet that "soul searching" went on at the bar with a few rounds of MGD.

Dikembe Meiztombo said...

You see, as I stated earlier when commenting on Simmons' Lambeau column, the SUBURBS are what make Milwaukee a good city. Milwaukee Milwaukee is ghetto as fuck. I don't set foot up in that mufucker anymore. this summer already-14,000 arrests, 200 illegal firearms seized, and last years homicide rate has been eclipsed already. It's fucking nuts. I swear to God someone should just drop a bomb on that city. If you come to Milwaukee, stay in Ozaukee County. Don't leave. Don't let somebody sucker you into going to Water Street or to the East Side. You'll get in a fight or get shot. I'm not fucking kidding. Milwaukee is FUCKING GHETTO. You hear about all the German culture and midwestern hospitality. It's all bullshit. Simmons said it was like 1992 in Milwaukee. Yeah you know how it's like 1992? Like the Fucking LA Riots, that's how. I need a fuckin' drink. Vodka and Cokes at my crib if anyone's interested! (in Cedarburg not WW III)

Dikembe Meiztombo said...

That's why all of my friends that lived in Milwaukee moved the hell out of there. Terrible parents, terrible schools. It's like a third world country except these people are "free" to do what ever thety want. Yesterday, some asshole robbed and MURDERED a mentally retarded guy at the bus stop. What the Fuck!!??
