Monday Morning Quarterback

Kind of a wacky weekend in the NFL huh? Out of the 5 teams that were 10 point or more favorites all but one covered, easily. El Pad had a rough betting experience going a gnarly 0-3 in college (although I hit the USC bet, the line dropped to 17) and a respectable 4-2 in the pros. After going 7-2 last week that brings the overall stand at 11-7. Not bad. Let's get into some of the events that was a great football weekend.

GIANTS! Unbelievable comeback win on the road. Just gutted out a rough 3 quarters and took it to Philly in the fourth to tie the game and force overtime. Eli was unspectacular for 3 quarters mostly due to "protection problems" but really turned it on when it mattered. Driving down the field to set-up a tying FG he then went unconscious in the OT period and went 8-8, 82 yards and a TD. Now they head to Seattle to face the Hawks who sit at 2-0 but it's a different 2-0 as yesterday they had a under-whelming victory over the Cards. That's two under-whelming performances against two mediocre teams. The Giants are not a mediocre team.

Gamble is his name and gamble he did. A lateral pass that went bad the Panthers blew thier game in Minny and now sit 2 behind the flying Falcons. Vick and Co. set a record by rushing for over 300 yards with him and Dunn doing most of the work. Needless to say the Falcons look good, the Bucs and the Panthers don't.

Speaking of the Bucs, Simms needs to sit. I guess he ain't ready. And the cover is still on the Cadillac, cuz we haven't seen that fool yet.

Pats still own Jets. Ravens squash Raiders has predicted.

Are the Saints for real? Well you know what....with Brees you have to respect them now.
This Colston kid is becoming a threat in an offense that can score.

Niners with a big home win against a pretty good Ram team still finding themselves. I called Frank Gore a year ago and now he's emerging as a top back. Did anyone see the throw Alex Smith made to Bryant for the go-ahead TD? Wow.

Colts did what they do against bad teams and Manning passes Unitas on the all-time Colts list.

Broncos struggled again and the Chargers look like the team to beat out west.

Redskins offense makes me want to puke when I watch it. It's awful. I though Al Saunders was a genius? Brunell has to go. I'm surprised that situation doesn't get more press. What do fans in DC want?

T.O busted his finger and is out 2-4 weeks. Culpepper layed a home-opening egg.

Bills looked pretty good again, should we watch out?

Bengals took care of business over the Browns but did anyone see the lick Chad Johnson took?
Let's see him do the chicken dance after that?

Da Bears.

the 'boys looked ok last night. got lucky that the skins couldn't totally execute last night and got away with the home opener. good time for a bye week to retool and reevaluate.

skins offense looks raider-ish. mark brunell duped us last year and now the coaching staff wont bench him even for 1 game.

Chicago is scary-good right now.

No excuse for the Iggles to blow that kind of lead. Reid should take the blame.

Coker needs to go, that's obvious.

More so than Carr

I expect a number 3 ranking. Auburn should get 2.

El Padrino said...

he did los, but you know what

you have no RB. Westbrook, and I've said this a million times, is a nice player but he is not a wear down the opposition back. He cannot carry the ball 25 times, he just can't. He'll either breakdown somewhere along the line or he'll turn the ball over. He's a glorified third down back. Yeah your defensive line is awesome but draft a goddamn running back already!!

Spaceman Spiff said...

you aint getting number 3 even if deserved, with USC's reputation

Spaceman Spiff said...

how is it possible for me to be a fan of 2 teams, redskins and seminoles that have some seriously inept offenses. its like watching the same game, jeff bowden needs to go, no way he can get a job anywhere else, how can he be running the whole offense.

This Eagles loss is the worst I've had to endure since the NFC Championships that were lost three in a row.

It's worse than the Super Bowl loss because I could at least take solace in the fact that we got there.

It's worse than the losses last year because we could at least blame TO and McNabb's injury.

This one... inexcusable. The Eagles gave that game back. Andy Reid forgot how to call plays in the 4th quarter. The entire team got careless. The Giants benefitted from a fluke fumble in the endzone. And I didn't see Trent Cole's taunting penalty, but that is just bush league shit. Trent Cole was having an amazing game and he singlehandedly pissed it away on one dumb moment.

Throw in some key dropped passes in overtime, and you have a recipe for disaster.

I take nothing away from the Giants. They proved to me that they are the class of the NFC East right now. They didn't fold. Good teams don't fold.

But the Eagles did dominate most of the game. If they can dominate 4 quarters instead of just 3, they'll contend again. But right now, this stings like a bitch!

El Padrino said...

4?

Cole kicked Kareem Mackenzie in the sac or tried too. Stupid penalty making Feely kick from 25 instead of 50 is a huge difference on the road.

El Padrino said...

6? that's why ND's 2 rating was a bullshit, they really weren't a true 2

The Rev said...

ElP...

I love Westbrook, but I'm starting to agree with you.

The Eagles needed to wear down the Giants at the end and gain yards on the ground. They didn't even come close to doing it.

Correll Buckhalter is more of that style of running back.

I'm thinking the Eagles don't even have good plays to get those yards in the book. With 70% of the playbook being pass plays, how do you concentrate on grinding out yards?

Can you tell I'm a little upset?

chad johnson took a lick, but not as big of a lick as NOTRE DAME TOOK! beyatch!

i hope Kornheiser can do another Skins game and bring up their highly overpaid and overrated O-Coord.

giants game... superb comeback, officiating got a little sketchy at the end.. but what a meltdown and complete boning by NY.

the best part of the Jints game is McNabb getting that false start penalty when he was trying to mess with that linebacker. he was trying to fake him out and he got the penalty called on his OWN team.. douche bag.

has it been mentioned that ND took a RAPING? im glad that only ex-players' opinions count.. i could take jaywhite's dad's advice and gamble my way to being a millionaire!

hail to the victors, biznitches.

The Rev said...

Agreed on the penalty ElP... that was a huge difference.

I take my chances with Feely kicking from 50 yards if I'm the Eagles. But 35 is practically a gimmie even for him.

Spaceman Spiff said...

saban picking culpepper over brees, huge mistake or what

ebntx said...

i believe thejaywhite has nothing left to look forward to. it seems his "playa" days are over after the move (re:his blog) and nd takes it straight up the ass this weekend. all that is left for him is a teabagging from iam to make his weekend complete.

The Rev said...

Yeah, I was realy pissed at that false start. McNabb should know better by now. He got cocky.

I don't blame McNabb for the loss. But that was an example of cockiness that I think overtook the whole team in the 4th quarter.

The Eagles had the Giants down, and fighting with each other on the sidelines to boot. You put a team away when they are in that state. You don't let up. And the Eagles let up.

Isiah Thomas said...

from what I read it was more the Eagles laying an egg than great Giant football, you get down by that much, you ain't pulling out victories consistently.

Get Brunell out, if they're going to lose at least put in the young kid and see what he's got.

The O-Line can't protect and at least Campbell is athletic enough not to get sacked like Brunell.

And Springs being out is hurting the secondary and overall D. When you make Bledsoe look like Montana you know there's problems.

But yes, it was the Eagles laying a huge egg.

I mean, they laid a fuckin cheese omlette with ham and peppers right on the damn field and a side of home fries with toast to boot.

The Eagles laid eggs, and that led to the Giants laying balls right on our collective chins.

Spaceman Spiff said...

I believe Zeke was the only loss this week with Miami.

I will officially update later today. No one took the Monday night game, so the pool is in the books early this week.

I watched two games yesterday, the Bears game, and the skins cowboys game.

First up the Bears...they don't have to prove anything, but they have proven that their offense is at least a little better than it was last year...and their defense is just as good. Its still early, but I like what I see.

Skins vs Cowboys...Zeke, I like how you changed your tune from two weeks ago. Two weeks ago you thought it was a great idea to keep Brunnell in there and let the kid sit. Well, it is nice to have a veteren QB around to teach a young kid how to be completely inept and go three and out. The Skins were horrible to watch. I know the Cowboys D is decent, but the Skins couldn't do anything. Their defense was almost just as bad. The Cowboys marched up and down the field almost at will against them. Speaking of the Cowboys...how about catching a pass? I saw Jerry Jones smiling on the field after that game, but there wasn't much to smile about aside from the scoreboard.

Brady Quinn seemed to be more concerned with his hair and eye blacking getting smeared than his play.

They put up a comparison between his first two years and Henne's and Henne's numbers obliterated Quinn's. I believe Quinn had 1 more INT than TD his first two years.

Pundits talk about Tedford and his QB's being "system" guys. Well Quinn sucked pre Weiss and had one good year last season. Seems like a "system" QB to me.

He is not a franchise QB, at all.

And don't get me started on Szmardia.

El Padrino said...

No doubt that Henne is better QB
I've said that all along. He's a true pocket passer.

He needs to improve on his secondary reads and maybe some on the run throws. He's going to be a good one.

anonymous said...

spiff, it doesnt matter if all those teams already have QBs.. you take Brady Quinn because Touchdown Jesus loves his soul and he will take you to the promise land.

didnt u watch the halftime special on "notre dame football saturday on NBC"? chuckie weis has taught him SO much.. his game has been taken to a new level. Tom brady, marino, manning, montana, unitas, they have nothing on the potential that BQ has.

and that sir, is why you double-draft a QB of brady quinn's stature.

The Clarett plea is 7.5 yrs. After 3.5yrs he can ask the judge to let him out. So he'll be in there 3.5yrs. If he doesn't get killed in there by the Turkish mafia.

temwr said...

I do feel sorry for the Michigan fans. They will get all their hopes up and then get crushed by Ohio State in the last game. That will put them in The Outback Bowl. Which really stinks because they appear to be worthy of a BCS bowl, but losing that last game will dash those hopes.

And ND on NBC, even the announcers couldn't fluff ND back into it.

The OU/Oregon was amazing. OU got jobbed. I could care less who won, but OU got jobbed. 1st the onside kick, which it was clear didn't go 10 yds before ORE touched it, then a pass int call that should have been taken back due to a tipped ball...Amazingly inept refs.

And Fouts did sound like he was doing play by play, but he apparently wasn't. He never shut up though.

I'd love to see Fouts and Theismann do a Chagers/Redskins game.

I watched deal or no deal once. It was annoying. Some chick had 3 boxes out there, 500K, 1Million, and 1 dollar. The deal guy offered 100K. I watched her think about it for 5 minutes. 5 minutes of my life I will never get back.

Here's a hint, if you have a 2/3 chance to get something far far better than what he is offering say no deal and open another fucking box!!! Then deal if you feel the need. The worst that can happen is you get down to two boxes with $1 and 500k. The offer will probably be the same 100K at that point. Fucking show, still has me mad. I hate dornd.

re: celebrations in the NFL....

Ok so you can't have a group celebration after a TD, or any kind of choreographed TD celebration...ok.

But what about after a 1st down catch or tackle? I want to hurt someone after seeing a WR get up and do the arm shimmy/1st down thing. How does this not get a flag?

Or when the DB watches his receiver get by him but the pass sails over the WR's head for an incompletion and they celebrate (hello Carlos Rodgers). No Flag?

The NFL needs to crack down on this. Its been out of hand for a while.

Isiah Thomas said...

my favorite part of DornoD is when someone gets on an early run and knocks out a bunch of low #'s....

the offers are going up and it gets to a ridiculous point, like $300,000.

And the donkey reasons that they'll stay hot and they keep going for it.

Nevermind that there are now more high #'s to knock out than low #'s and you're bound to knock those out thus lowering the offer.

"No Deal" - then the next 3 cases are high # and the offer gets cut drastically.

Now, they feel stupid for not taking the huge offer and keep going, only to continue to knock out big #'s.

Eventually they settle for like $40,000. I love those contestants.

temwr said...

I get mad when anyone celebrates a first down. Or a tackle that ended a 4yd run. Or a 8yd punt return.

It is also very annoying when a defender celebrates when the offense just fucked up. Ala what zeke was talking about.

Actually check all that. I am going to start incorporating this behaivor into my job. When I finish some sort of spreadsheet I am going to the kitchen and dancing. When I answer the most mundane question I am going to shout "boo ya!" When I return from lunch it will be high fives and chest bumps for everyone.

The Rev said...

I never gave a rat's ass about celebrations.

If you want to stop a guy from celebrating, make a better play than him or stop him from getting in the endzone.

That being said, I also think it is silly when a CB celebrates on a ball that is not even close to being catchable like he did something great. But all it does is make that guy look like an ass.

Isiah Thomas said...

And you're trying to tell me NO ONE can get an interview with Mo Clarett?

He's got to have a ton of things to say.

"I invented the question mark sucka"

"You mean to tell me I cain't get my goose on with my AK-47 in my escalade?"

"You heard that new Ohio Inmates CD, its off the heazy"

Please, someone get a mic infront of Clarett.

Did Notre Dame steal your lunch money as a child or something?

Yes, they were overrated.

So was Miami. So was Cal. So was Texas.

Doesn't anybody remember ElP having Miami at 3? I was told they had a great defense? Gave up 31 versus a Louisville team without Michael Bush for the whole game, and without Brahm for half of the game.

If you're gonna hate on people for being overrated, you have to spread it out. I mean...no one even made a comment about Miami or Cal when they lost.

Isiah Thomas said...

what I'm getting at Rev is why not let someone celebrate a good play (a TD) but you can celebrate a 1st down catch?
