Home of Snarky Comments since 1932

Okay, so how exactly are the Astros making this comeback? They've pretty much sucked balls all year, and now all of the sudden, they go on a 8 game winning streak to pull within 1 1/2 games of the Cards. This is definitely in the pantheon of collapses, if it happens. They were something like 8 games back with 13 to go. That's absolutely freaking absurd. In other NL Central news, what happened to the Reds? Weren't they tied with the Cards back in August or something?

Who would have guessed that out of all the divisions in the NL, the West would be the one with two teams? Shocking. I still hope that Philly can mount a run, but I remain skeptical. They always seem to find a way to screw it up.

I'm not sure which team I want more in the Series, the Twins or the Tigers. Both are great cinderella-type stories. How often do you see a team go to dead last to first in just three years like the Tigers have done?

My hoped World Series: Phillies-Tigers

root for the Tigers, it's better for your health.

Believe me, the Phillies almost found another way to screw it up last night. I am losing some hope.

But a Tigers and Phillies World Series would rule. As a result of that pairing, Iam and I would get so revved up and pissed at each other we would have a slapfight to the death.

IAM if the Tigers make the series, i'm going to need to borrow your couch to sleep on.

Spaceman Spiff said...

i dont want to see the phillies in the series unless mitch williams makes a comeback, mullet included

The Rev said...

Mitch Williams made a comeback last night, but he was disguised as Tom Gordon.

Walking in the tying run in the 9th... that's just wrong!

Spaceman Spiff said...

i caught the end of that game, i thought you guys were screwed once that pitcher got that hit.

Isiah Thomas said...

Rev - I was watching that game also. I think the highlight was the botched double play where Rollins threw it to no one in particular. It must have been excruciating to be a Phils fan and watch that game.

I don't get why Buck Martinez was so adament about pitching to Soriano in the 9th. Gordon was awful and even though Soriano doesn't have much plate discipline he would have hit the walk off hr there. Shows why Buck is an announcer again.

The Rev said...

Actually, it wasn't a botched DP. There were two outs. Rollins had a choice to go to second or first, juggled the ball, and made a late choice to flip to second. However, Utley thinking he was going to first ducked for the throw. It resulted in a flip to second with no one there.

Honestly, I never saw the end of the game. It was after 11:30 here in the east, and I was getting upset with it. Honeslty, I had to take some Maalox as a result of what was gong on with the game. I wanted to spend a little quality time with the lady after the game, and I was mad that Gordon extended the game in the first place. So I turned it off.

Maybe when I watch them, I jinx them. I may have to stop watching games. Then they'll win.

I didn't see the Phils game last night. I was watching the Braves/Mets. As a diehard Mets fan, I'm starting to worry that the Mets might "shit the bed '88 style" come next week. I've been talking myself into thinking that they will turn it on in the post-season, but I'm not sure now. Last night seeing Pedro take a Rodney King type beating was painful to watch. Plus in wasn't on SNY on the BB package, so I had to listen to the DB Braves annoucers beat the crap out of Pedro, Willie and the rest of the pitching staff. And it wasn't even the clowns from TBS/Turner south, it was Jeff Torborg on Fox Sports South. I think he is a far worse announcer then he was a manager and that's saying alot...Anyway, my point was I'm not sure who I'm rooting for to be the NL wildcard team, I don't know who I want the Mets to play.....

I rooted for the Tigers back in '84 (since the Cubs blew it and didn't make the Series) and I'll be rooting for them now. I love it when really crappy teams find a way to turn it around and do something good.

temwr said...

At this point both sides look like a crapshoot.

Who would be suprised to see the Twins, Yankees, A's or Tigers make it all the way? Nobody, that's who. Well I might be shocked if the A's make it out of that bunch.

Cards, Mets, Dodgers, Pads, Stros, Phils? None of those would shock me. Well the Stros would, but only because that would have meant a shocking collapse by the Cards.

I'm at the point where I'm surprised that there are people out there who would not be shocked if the Phils made it to the WS. Really, you wouldn't? At this point, I'd be absolutely bowled over if we just got the Wild Card.

But how's this for a sucky deal. Oct 7th and 8th I have to be in Boston for a friend's wedding. Those two dates happen to be the games that would be scheduled in Philly for the NLDS.

And today, a friend offered me the chance to buy two tickets to the Oct 7th game if it happens.

I want to kill my friend in Boston for getting married on that day. And I can't blow it off because I agreed to DJ the thing months ago.

Oh yeah, that's the same weekend that TO is coming back to Philly. I get to be driving home from Boston while that is going on.

Potentially one of the biggest weekends in Philly sports, and I'm stuck in New England.

Sorry... had to vent.

breezing past Shanoff's blog made me connect a couple of dots. (which really isnt too tough)

so has anyone else noticed that his new version of the "daily quickie" is a straight up listing of the stories off of espn's main page?

the order his topics are listed in are the EXACT SAME order that the stories were listed on espn this morning. people keep guzzling his balls saying that he is "breaking stories" and stuff.. it looks like he breezes by espn.com and maybe that deadspin site, and lists all the stories in the exact same order.

how is this reporting news? it's regurgitation..

i guess when he makes his outlandish claims like florida gators should be number one and that OJ didnt do it are seriously a desperate ploy at sparking convos on his site.

Isiah Thomas said...

"Brunell received three stitches resembling a half moon on a cut on the tip of his throwing elbow"

Isiah Thomas said...

I stopped taking Shanoff's blog seriously a long time ago. First there are way too many posts. As we've said here, the give and take is where its at. Having to scroll through five posts in the same day to get to a convo is worthless.

Great observation iam. It wouldn't surprise me. His whole instant history schtick makes you think he wouldn't dig very hard or far to break a story so why not just take the topic from somewhere else and add your own thoughts.

I think I'm the only person there to have a comment deleted by him. He thought he broke/found the story about Madden grossing a $100 M in sales. I put a comment up saying that LOV had this story 4 hours ago which he promptly deleted.

speaking of regurg'ing, here's something funny from another TO column..

"Give me a break. Those officers are 10 times better than this man. ... We police officers don't go out to these calls and make stuff up."

"Him and his publicist need to apologize to the officers that were out there, that did their job," said White, head of the largest police employee group in the Dallas department with more than 3,500 active and retired members.

if snarky = telling the truth, then i'm one snarky mafugger.

people cant handle the troof.. really, they cant. like simmons condescending about sports bloggers... Simmons just talks down about "sports journalists on message boards" to try to give himself more credibility. just cause you get cash to talk sports does not mean your opinions hold more merit. sounds like someone is realy self-important.

it's like the political ads that tell you how BAD someone else is, rather than how GOOD their candidate is. trying to build yourself up by condescending to other people down does not give you more cred. just because he gets paid money to write doesnt mean his opinions are more worthwhile than any of ours.

this is blindingly obvious, for example, based on his "fantasy record". his picks suck, and even his wife beats him. seriously.. your wife is beating you at picking football games. she probably picks by mascots, like girls in NCAA pools do. so while you jizz your pants about going to Green Bay to see their legendary field, your wife should be the one that people take sports advice from.

fraud.

so the Lemmings would be the only retards reading my comments.. and their opinions ARE worthless, just cause theyre so intensely dumb, not cause im that much better than them.

The Rev said...

Alright I'm tryign to piece together the whole TO thing.

He may have mixed some pills by accident, his publicist may have freaked out and overreacted thinking he was committing suicide, she may have told that to the police when they got there, then being the publicist she is probably lied about telling them that later after the incident was over to save face. And now the police are pissed at her for being snarky in the news conference to them.

Is that right?

temwr said...

but you are, aren't you?

that much better than they are.

The Rev said...

anonymous said...

for the record, and my intentions are to drop the name TO from my vocab, but i had one more thing that didnt seem to get enough play.

past the obvious "supplements and pain pills" fraud.. because yeah, your protein shake and advil are REALLY gonna put u in the emergency room..

but one thing that was touched on here, but not much by the media.. his publicist saying he has "25 million reasons to live".. maybe THIS is part of the reason TO is so screwed up. the company that he keeps looked at this situation and didnt say "he loves life because of ....family, kids, etc." she said he was still alive because HE LOVES MONEY.

that, my friends, is definitely a top reason to stay alive. your life is definitely worth living if you have enough money to buy all the bullshit that you want. if youre poor, kill yourself, if youre rich.. keep your ass alive.

maybe this is part of the reason TO himself is so fucked up mentally.

Isiah Thomas said...

Poorly organized, food was taken away early, lines for autos were rushed, all night events were closed WAY early. We got home by 9. The event was supposed to go 'till 9 or 9:30. You stand in line for 40-50 minutes to get a pre-determined group of signatures. Put all 12 in their own spot. the stadium is not small. Over all, a pretty crappy experience.

Saw this recent quote from a VERY famous athlete, and thought it might be of interest here. (And maybe this will get more than 2 or 3 comments on here before 9:30 like has been the norm lately.) I'm thinking/guessing it was said tongue in cheek but who knows.

"I don't really follow baseball. Mostly because I don't understand it. If you can do tobacco and play the sport, then it's technically probably not a sport."

I'd see if anyone could guess who said it, but I hate it when people do that to me so I won't do that here. :-) It's someone I greatly admire (read his 1st book and I'll bet you feel the same), despite the doping rumors (which I don't think are true) and who I also think is damn hot. :-) Yep, it's Lance Armstrong.

The Rev said...

temwr said...

"I don't really follow baseball. Mostly because I don't understand it. If you can do tobacco and play the sport, then it's technically probably not a sport."

Lance is just saying this to get back in the public eye. All he had/has going for him is cycling and America doesn't care about that. He is just trying to extend his 15 minutes of fame, which was more like 3 hours, but he wants it extended. He needs to let it go.

whocares said...

Beth,

Dont put too much stock in what Lance says. He rides a bike for a living.

temwr said...

Also I am completely biased against cycling and can not believe how many stupid ESPYs that guy won for riding his damn bike.

And didn't he bail on his wife to nail Sheryl Crow? Or did his wife do something bad and he just happened to end up with Sheryl? Offhand one of those scenarios seems far more likely than the other.

Beth82678 said...

From what I understand, he and his wife were long broken up before he hooked up with Sheryl Crow. I think he gets a pass for that one. What he shouldn't get a pass for though, which nobody talks about, is how he had a serious girlfriend when he got cancer and she stood by him the whole time, played the dutiful and supporting girlfriend and all, and then he dumped her as soon as he gets better. His ex was not who he was with during his cancer.

I actually have a great respect for cyclists and think what he did at the Tour de France was ungodly. His dominance there was equal to MJ and Tiger at their respective sports, and required as much if not more hard work than there's did/does. But then again I have several good friends who are triathletes so I realize I'm a little biased towards cyclists.

My negatives on cycling:

1) Seemingly teammates are thrown under the bus so that one of the guys gets all the glory. Can anyone name more than 1 of Lance's teammates? I can't name any. But when you talk to someone about cycling they always say that the glory hog gets to draft behind the teammates and other cycling crap that makes the teammates incredibly useful. Yet, nobody hears anything about how the teammates helped.

2) You only use half your body. I can't get behind a sport that only uses the legs. The arms are for steering, but that isn't enough for me to consider them a key part.

3) No kid in America rides his bike around the block and pretends to be in a big bike race. If anything they pretend they are in NASCAR. There is a reason for this. The reason is that cycling is not cool.

Beth82678 said...

Damn tem, you get run over by a cyclist as a kid? :-)

Good points though, except that I'll say that "true cycling fans" totally appreciate Lance's teammates. Lance himself for the record donates all his prize money from winning the tour to his teammates (which I think is like several hundred thou). Of course when you're making millions off sponsorships and commercials, it's easier to do that.

Ok, my half-hearted defense of Lance and/or cycling is done with this post. The pressures of avoiding typos are just too tough. (He's still hot though...)

The point is a cyclist does not need to train his arms just to steer.

I imagine he does squats, leg curls, and what nots that help his cycling out a lot, but he isn't doing bench presses to help him steer that bike.
