E-mail from thejaywhite

So over the weekend, I get an e-mail from thejaywhite. This isn't a guest column per say, but I thought it was interesting enough to post.

For the record, I am not posting this for any pro or con Notre Dame bias. I am a Penn State fan, so I will admit that Notre Dame is not one of my favorite teams. But I found the e-mail below interesting.

First of all, I found it interesting that thejaywhite still talks in the third person in his e-mails, at least in the first sentence. .

Secondly, it is an interesting look at a conversation between father and son, especially when the father played for ND.

Thirdly, I knew it would stir up a few weekend comments.

Happy Labor Day!

--------------------------------

Below an email conversation from my dad and Jaywhite, Dad is a former notre dame all american DB. You can see my email to him after the big win at G tech, and his response above. Just thought I would share the excitement from the ND family.

Hey! These Notre Damers--including freshmen( 18 ..19..years old!)-- had to 'secure' a victory away from home. Now,watch them!!!! But maybe even one or two games at home playing conservativelywill help.I do believe they'll start to "show" their collective talents by October !!!!

Subject: what a scare

that was a big scare..hopefully our boys in south bend wake up and learn something from this..i know GT has a great D but if brady wants to bring heisman home to momma then hes gonna have to play better than that.

Well, there were at least two teams on ND's schedule who looked better than them yesterday.

Enjoy the Gator Bowl, Domerz.

thejaywhite said...

ya good one...clearly ND is a BCS quality team. Gtech is a good opponent and a very tough opener. Not many teams could have walked into that environment and won.

ebntx said...

nd was lucky to ge out of gt with a win...neverless they proved me wrong with that win, but no way did they prove that they deserved the #2 ranking. all the other top 5 teams blew out their opponent. about the only other thing proved was that gt looked a lot better than most people expected them to be. using thejaywhite's reasoning we can expect gt to have a top 5 ranking next season because they played a close game though.

the horns keep on rolling and will continue that on osu next week. if that osu d can't stop one back from gaining 170+ yards rushing, how are they going to stop that stable of backs that ut has?

hook 'em horns

The NOVA Report said...

How can you consider a team with next to no running game a "good opponent"? Moreover, how can Notre Dame not stop the one person on the field that EVERYBODY knows is getting the ball? Case and point-- first quarter, first and goal for GT on the four. They line up double tight, with Johnson one on one with a 5'9" corner. What coach is so cocky to think that his team comes out on top of that matchup? Seriously.

I think that yesterday, USC and Penn State looked better than Notre Dame. Georgia Tech is going to be a team that finishes 3rd in their division in the ACC.

Isiah Thomas said...

nd will lose 2 of their next 3 and 4 overall.

Quinn lost the Heisman yesterday, no need to mention him and the award in the same sentence again unless its "Brady Quinn watched the Heisamn ceremony on TV again...."

Too much sizzle not enough sausage with ND.

And SC covering easily as predicted.

The NOVA Report said...

Not only that, but I think the rest of America (Southeast excluded) was introduced to Calvin Johnson.

If he's not destined to wear a Detroit uniform next year, I don't know who is.

thejaywhite said...

GT is ten times better than Arkansas. All you nay sayers are unbelievable. A win is a win. And it was a quality win at that.

The heisman isn't lost yet, Awards and rankings are earned by performance at the end of the season not the start, we should all know this by now.

TaeKwonDee said...

ND was lucky, I'm a FSU fan so speaking objectively I can say that GT was jobbed by the refs. They were Big 10 refs, imagine that.....I was at the game, and the personal foul call on hitting brady quinn was one of the worst calls that i've ever seen in my life. not only was he 2 feet inbounds, but he had just turned UPFIELD. one who is going out of bounds generally does not turn upfield. second, calvin johnson made that catch on the ground. a play that turned possession back to ND (made GT punt) with 8 min left in the 4th. called a catch on the field, and improbably overturned. in fact, i don't care if he made the catch or not, it was called a catch on the field, and there was no indisputable evidence to overturn it. it's far too early to say brady lost his shot at the heisman, but playing like he did last night won't even get him to the DAC.

The Rev said...

Penn State definitely looked better than ND did.

Next week's game is gonna be a classic!

thejaywhite said...

noway and FSU talking shit about notre dame? you should just be thankful- touchdown jesus didnt get out of bed 13 years ago and take back our NC that you got even though we kicked your ass earlier in the season but somehow your win against BC gives you the title.

The NOVA Report said...

The penalty wasn't for Quinn being out of bounds; it was for the hit being helmet to helmet. The Johnson catch was correctly overturned-- he did catch the ball before the ball hit the ground, but he didn't "complete a football motion" to complete the play. Pretty simple.

With that said, Georgia Tech is a middle of the pack ACC team, and if Notre Dame had the stones to join the Big 10, they'd probably be in that 3-5 range behind Ohio State, Michigan (who looked equally shitty yesterday) and Penn State.

thejaywhite said...

Notre Dame defeated Michigan last season AT MICHIGAN...

youre only as good as your last game...so for now we are better than michigan

The NOVA Report said...

...and they LOST to Michigan State at HOME last season.

What's your point?

Like I said-- enjoy the Gator Bowl, dooooooooooooooood.

thejaywhite said...

DOOOOD youre from virginia....youve probably played 0 collegiate level sports and you got married at 19 with 4 kids already ..enough said

The NOVA Report said...

Nice argument, douche.

I'll see you in Jacksonville.

thejaywhite said...

well am I right?

how many all american awards do you have?

ever play varsity sports after highschool?

Well teams dont always have good games but good teams come through in the end...do I think ND is the best team in college football right now ? NO...but do they have a chance at the title...damn right they do...we are fucking good and anything can happen...of course you dont know that cause you play video games and dont realize when two good teams play anything can happen...

you would make a good sports reporter..you fit the profile..never player sports at a high level but love to run your mouth with no backing...

The Rev said...

I love it when people use the whole "did you ever play the sport at a high level" argument to make their opinions seem so much more informed than the rest of us.

Dude... it's football. It ain't brain surgery.

If you asked me to judge good brain surgery, I would tell you that I couldn't because I never cut open a brain. That makes sense.

But I think most of us are qualified to have an opinion on sports here. You don't have to play a high level of sports in order to judge whether a team is good or not. It ain't that hard.

And for the record, I have no All-American awards. Though I did once win a trophy in my boys club for my tee-ball team winning the championship. We had an awards banquet and everything. I think I had stuffed chicken for dinner that night.

The Rev said...

Just for the record, and only because I was curious and bored tonight, I looked at the list of Notre Dame All-American players in their history, and only saw one guy with the last name of White. And that was Jim White in 1943.

That's not him, is it? Or does your dad have a different last name?

Just curious as to who it was. Care to share, Jay?

The NOVA Report said...

Funny, I didn't know that All-Americans/ex-college athletes can't be blind homers. I mean, look at guys like Jay Bilas, Michael Irvin, Trev Alberts, Mark May, et al. Most importantly, it's even WORSE to call them on it.

not playing a sport DOES mean something...I wasnt questioning his football knowledge I was questioning his knowledge on not understanding the atmosphere of going on the road to open a season and the fact the teams only practises a few weeks....I was questioning his knowledge of the intangibles, not the game itself.

Dad's coaches at ND jon kuharich / hugh devore / and ara paraghian

Isiah Thomas said...

with all the hype ND got they should have won that game by 3 TD's at least, GT ain't that good.

Way too much hype for ND already. Padrino's ranking is closer to reality than more gave him credit for.

SC looks like it will be a "playa" in the BCS title. Don't count them out.

I too was raised and spent 15+ years in NOVA and am happy to say I am not married and don't have 4 kids. And I have all my teefis.

Isiah Thomas said...

I agree with Rev (taking a deep breath)....

Football ain't rocket science.....

Although I love hearing meathead announcers who know football but can't articulate a thought announce a game....case in point, Chris Spielman.

Isiah Thomas said...

For the record, bets last weekend:

Dogs :
1-1

3 Team 10 pt. Teasers:
3-1 (damn you Adrian Peterson)

Upset Special
1-0 (who else gave you Rice!!?!?!)

LOCK
1-0

Overall : 6-2

temwr said...

Spielman is just amazingly inept at announcing. He is also a terrible Arena Football coach.

Berman is a terrible announcer too, but that is neither here nor there.

Lou Holtz sounds like he had a stroke or his dentures are falling out, I'm not sure which. Either way I can't understand him when he talks. He needs to quit. Hopefully the chick that got Harold Reynolds fired can pull the same stunt on Holtz...Bad joke, I know...Yeah I know sexual harrassment isn't funny. Perhaps thejaywhite would disagree.

The Crocodile hunter got killed by a stingray. That is weird. Sad and weird.

ND was good enough to win and that is all that matters. GT is a solid team, it was on the road, and was the opener. I still think they lose 1 or 2, but they showed a little something. Previously I had said I would rate them 13. Maybe 9 is better.

The Northern Illionois RB looked pretty good. He gets a gold star.

The NOVA Report said...

Also, for what it's worth, I think you and your dad can hold whatever belief you want on the state of Notre Dame. Still doesn't change the fact that I think that they're a Top 20 (at best) team. The problem is Darius Walker. No way he can do what he did against Georgia Tech against better defensive teams.

Come back to me when the Domerz have a guy who can run between the tackles, mmmmkay???

The Rev said...

First of all, the death of the Crocodile Hunter is sad, but it is probably the least surprising news of any celebrity death I have ever heard.

Really, the way that man played with danger, he was destined to die in a freak accident. I'm actually surprised it didn't happen sooner.

Secondly, I'll actually play the other side of the fence now. No, Notre Dame did not look as good as everyone thinks they should. I do believe they were ranked a little too high.

But at the same time, I expected them to have a tough time on the road against GT. I don't think the fact that they had a tough time should be held against them. You're dealing with an road situation against a tough team playing their home opener. That's a lot of things to fire up the home team. There were a lot of intangibles. And ND overcame them.

Now, if they lose at home next week against Penn State, then we can really kill them. Now that would be fun.

The Rev said...

Zeke...

Ever since we started this blog, you've agreed with me way too much.

Cut it out!

The NOVA Report said...

To put the horse to rest Rev, i am in the opposite camp. I expected ND to blow GTech out of the water and win by two or three touchdowns. The way I see it, Notre Dame is a consensus Top 3 team who couldn't beat putaway team who will be lucky to finish in the Top 3 in it's division of it's conference.

Nova - I watched both the Michigan and Ohio State games on Saturday, and I wouldn't say they looked "equally shitty". OSU jumped to a 28-0 lead in 15 minutes, and they called off the dogs. They stopped throwing the ball, and they basically ran with their 3 RBs the rest of the game. Coach Tressel has never been one to try to get his team to score 40-50 pts a game, he has always stressed defense and field position. But now he has the firepower on offense where he can come out throwing and build a big lead early, and then just play ball control the rest of the game. And their D wasn't as bad as everyone thought they'd be. Wolfe ran for 185 on them, but it's not like he is some scrub who had a career day. He was the #2 runner in the nation last year, and he is their whole offense so he was bound to get his. They dominated a game they should have dominated, which is big considering they have the #1 target on their backs and they could have easily overlooked this game with the Texas game on the horizon.

The NOVA Report said...

Not sure if it was clear, but the "equally shitty" was just for Michigan. I think Ohio State looked like a bona fide national title contender.

Keith S said...

My bad then.

thejaywhite said...

A win is a win....and you're right next week is a big game for ND..but I really dont see anyways we lose this game..PS was even luckier than ND was last year in achieving an elite record...this was a wakeup call for our boys we gutted our a victory and I expect another one next week...geez its a good thing you guys get impressed easily with 30 pt wins against no bodies..lets crucify Notre Dame for winning a tight one on the road..if only every team had the balls to schedule tough situations like this.(opponent, location, date)

Isiah Thomas said...

Army, Navy, Air Force, Purde....

man I wish my team had the balls to schedule those tough ones....

Isiah Thomas said...

and oh yeah...Stanford, UCLA, North Carolina....

wow what a schedule...

Isiah Thomas said...

that's 7 easy wins right there...

all that leaves is them going 2-3 in their remaining 5 games and they go to a BCS game...

For Shame ND, FOR SHAME.

Isiah Thomas said...

ND = A Hot Terd

thejaywhite said...

purdue, UCLA, stanford, UNC have all been quality progrms over the last ten years...none are cake walks UNLESS YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY ELITE which ND is...but some of those will still be tough games..

the government schools are mandated by NBC we cant do much about that

Los said...

That win should keep them in the top 10 for the rest of the season (even if they lose the rest of their games). Good to see the refs giving Notre Dame some good calls. I guess they also work at NBC on the side.

Dikembe Meiztombo said...

Tiger Tiger Woods y'all!!

Keith S said...

"PS was even luckier than ND was last year in achieving an elite record"...
So now you're admitting that last year was lucky for ND. Well that more than justifies their preseason ranking this year.

Los said...

PSU was lucky last season??? They were 1 play away from an undefeated season - how is that luck?

The Irish lost 3, and were somehow still in BCS contention (please, Jaywhite, don't give me that USC game - they lost to a 5-6 team at home - unacceptable.).

I believe that Weiss is a good coach, but he still doesn't have all the players he needs to "legitimately" win a national championship (you know what I mean, Jay). I believe he is fully capable of doing that, but this is NOT the team. Their defense is not fast enough, and Quinn is not all he is cracked up to be ... at this point.

thejaywhite said...

No I dont think ND was LUCKY last season but they played well and got some bounces..

I have never been a big quinn fan I think he throws a wobbly ball and is very overratd..I think half of what he does is because teams are very scared of Walker..Walker is awsome..

and Yes PSU was very lucky..what did they win the previous 3 years...ten games combined?

The NOVA Report said...

I am not high on Walker. Like I said earlier, I think that he is more suited for change of pace duty because he is lacking between the tackles. Last year, Powers-Neal was the difference between a win and a loss against USC. Had he be given WAlker's carries, the clock would have moved, as opposed to Walker's running toward the sideline and halting the clock.

thejaywhite said...

I dont agree with that Walker is a stud..Notre Dame didnt really have the lineman last season to run between the tackles and they still dont really, so walker provides the outside threat teams have to respect

The NOVA Report said...

that's still a bit of a problem. If you can't run between the tackles, you're not going to be able to grind out the clock. That's a of a Football 101 kind of thing, don't you think?

JFreak said...

You know what I think?

I think we'll find out who's right soon enough.

Hopefully jay's right...but that's why they play the games, to find out.

And if ND was such a bad team last year, shouldn't USC have dropped in the rankings for just barely beating them? That seems to be the same thing you're suggesting with the ND-GT game. Sure, it wasn't a blowout, but a win is a win.

What we really need to talk about is Cal's fall. People were picking them as title contenders. What happened there?

JFreak said...

Oh, and I almost forgot. Michael Bush is out, and no one says anything? That's huge people. I'd say this makes a Louisville championship very unlikely.

thejaywhite said...

you can control the clock with moer than just running between the tackles..this isnt the old option offense we can do alot more now...look at the spurrier offenses....more than 1 way to skin a cat

Spaceman Spiff said...

should we give el padrino a do over on the top 25, miami is done

nd still sucks!

i know this discussion was on here before, but i think thejaywhite should be disallowed to use the term "us." he uses way too much, like he is part of the team or something.

btw...didn't you just run or something after high school? not to say that that isn't a tough sport, but no way can you compare that to football. there is no comparison. get it? no comparison. and no i did not do any sports after high school and i am fine with that. i dont need that along with my fake female conquest stories to make me feel good about myself. i got married at 20 and have 2 kids and yet still dont have to prove my manhood to anyone let alone brag about it. so you going to give up the info on "pops" yet either? didn't think so. sit down, shut up until you have something to say.

jfreak - good call, Michael Bush going down will probably crush Louisville's already slim title shot. TO his current recruits

Kids from rough neighbourhoods who are outstanding athletes and have a lot of baggage so noone else will touch them and have no sports brain and arent neccesarily lazy but are easily distracted by going to the clubs or hanging out with girls and playing video games.

Some character this jaywhite is

anyway, ND won a tough game on the road yes. But i was wondering why GTECH stopped throwing the ball to Calvin Johnson. And now Jaywhite is wasn't because he was covered. Yes he was double teamed most of them time but that doesn't stop great players...truth is they stopped throwing him the rock. Even the announcers stated so.
and the Ball fumble killed them

either way they are still over-rated, everyone agrees....

Dikembe Meiztombo said...

So, draft today. I gotta autopick. Do I set that up myself?

thejaywhite said...

I disagree theyre not overrated.

So not everyone agrees. The fact is its a wide open season this year there is clearly no ELITE DOMINANTE TEAM, every team has their issues. The fact is some teams have to be ranked in the top 5 each year. Based on last season and the continued progression that is expected yes Notre Dame deserves to be in the top 5. Why not? They lost in a BCS bowl game to the team thats now ranked # 1, and they have almost everyone back.

It's that simple, you guys have no basis for saying they dont deserve this ranking. You just dont like us well tough. We are 10-4 since the start of last season how many other teams can say that.I say our ranking is justified, and beat us to prove otherwise.

jugdish said...

You can change the pre rankings of your players...or you can go with Yahoo's pre rankings, but you don't have to do anything for the autopick to work.

Isiah Thomas said...

ND got SMOKED by OSU, top 10 preseason rank maybe, top 5, doubtful.

I'm telling you, watch out for USC.

They're still loaded.

I spent about 30 mins preranking guys yesterday then when I went to save it I had preranked too many and it didn't take. I didn't bother redoing it. I just hope I don't get Dominick Davis.

jugdish said...

So how many people will actually be at the live draft aside from myself?

Dikembe Meiztombo said...

Okay, cool.

thejaywhite said...

USC will falter because of Carrols coaching. He is not a good coach.

I have no doubt that they have the talent thats what happens when you make 3 straight championship games and you are from california. Players go to your school.

As for the Fiesta bowl it wasnt that one sided. A two touchdown score isn't that bad. Ohio state had 27 1st downs to NDs 22, Sure they had 250+ more yards but they also had two plays for 60 and 85 yards.

Theres your difference right there. That Ohio state team was loaded look how many kids went to the NFL. WE're talking about this year.

Dikembe Meiztombo said...

Can I chime in and make picks when I'm available? Or is it set once it starts. I'll have like a 30 min gap where I won't be available. I can start the draft. Then, I get off work gotta get cigs/gas 10-15 min drive home and I'm back.

jugdish said...

I've never done that before, but I am pretty sure you can get into and out of the draft at anytime. If you aren't there, the autopick will pick for you.

Isiah Thomas said...

you were talking about ND's preseason ranking being justified on last year, when after a month of prep, All-God Coach Weiss got SMOKED.

Let's see, Weiss couldn't get-r done vs USC at home, then lost to MSU at home then got DESTROYED by OSU, uh he's a great coach right?

Then after an entire off season to prepare his vaunted O puts up a meager 14 on Ga Tech? Call me when he's won something without Belichick and Brady, Tom that is.

Isiah Thomas said...

Who else saw Peter King predict 10-6 for Detroit....

Uhh Pete, might want to go decaf buddy.

jugdish said...

Somehow Mr. Sheridan gor Zeke's log in ID...and now he is hating on Notre Dame!

Isiah Thomas said...

I've gone on record stating my hatred for ND.

ND and Duke, not sure who is worse.

jugdish said...

I saw that too...is that what SI gets for paying him to go to all of those training camps??

I admit I'm partial to the Bears...but he said that he is unsure of them because their QB situation is unsettled...when has it ever been settled? Hell, every year EACH QB on their roster starts at least one game.

jugdish said...

What has Bellicheck won without Weis??

Isiah Thomas said...

if you think NE won 3 SB's bc of Weiss you're smoking more pole than DB.

jugdish said...

I'm just saying your logic is faulty on that one. I mean that kind of argument could be used for any coach.

Isiah Thomas said...

how is my logic faulty?

You can't have it both ways and say Weis is a great coach, but then his record shows he's not there yet.

I'd say in college the Coach has more impact over the outcome than in the Pro's.

And Weis' teams haven't been lights out.

whocares said...

going 10-4 since the start of last season is not something to brag about, jaywhite.

How many teams can say that? I would guess somewhere around 10-15, just off the top of my head.
