AL MVP

I agree with the SG that one of the things broke in sports is MVP voting. Is the MVP the best player on the best team, best player in the league, player that if you took him off his team the team would suck? Do they have to play on a winning team? Is it the high scorer/stat leader? MVP voting rules are too ambiguous and far too often you have bias and agenda driven motives involved.

Two years ago I was living in CA and thought that Shaq was by far the league MVP over Steve Nash. Now that I’ve lived in PHX for over a year I’ve done a 180. Steve Nash, to me is truly a deserving 2 time MVP. Sure the only other 2 time NBA MVP’s are some of the all time greats and seeing Nash’s name included in that list looks out of place. But to me, the MVP is someone who plays on a winning team and if you took him off the team or replaced him in the lineup how would the team fare. IMO if you took Nash off the Suns they’d still be good but he is the engine that runs that team. Great passing, great hustle, great teammate. Sure his D is suspect but he’s so integral to what they do that without him the team wouldn’t be the same. Preseason they weren’t even picked to be an 8th seed and look where they ended up.

What I’m trying to do is lay the groundwork for is my case for Frank Thomas as the AL MVP. Billy Beane took a flier on Thomas before the season and most people didn’t really give the move too much of a chance to work out; especially given Thomas’ proclivity for injury the last few seasons. Yet Thomas has produced well this season, he’s on pace to hit 40 hrs and have 100+ RBI. Not too bad for a 38 yr old who has moderate protection in that lineup. I think the MVP should come from a winning team and the A’s are in 1st in the AL West, have been for quite some time. Take Thomas off this team and they’d still probably be pretty good, but there would be a big void in the middle of that lineup. Chavez and Crosby have been inconsistent and part of Swishers success is due to Thomas’ bat.

Here’s the case against the other candidates :

Jeter : Gimme a break. I think Jeter is a good player just not the MVP. And don’t give me the “Yankees have been injured all year”. Bullshit. When you’re still trotting out A-Rod, Giambi, Damon, Posada, etc and have Rivera and Co. on your team you better win, even with a few injuries. I agree with Papi. Put Jeter on the Royals and he ain’t carrying them to shit.

Ortiz : Great player, likeable guy, unbelievably clutch. Team is fading though. Gotta be on a contender to be MVP. I don’t mind him being a DH, that doesn’t affect his candidacy in my book.

Johan Santana
: Probably #2 on my ballot but the MVP award for a pitcher is called the Cy Young. Also, Liriano was better than him at the start of the year.

Jermaine Dye : Tough to overlook him as he’s having a great season. His team is fighting for their playoff lives and they are in a tough division. But he’s got a lot of protection around him. Plus this is a career year and with HGH/steriods leaving a cloud over sudden feats of power....

Morneau/Mauer : Both having great seasons on a scrappy team that has rallied from a horrific start to contend for a playoff berth. Neither say MVP to me though. They get overshadowed by Liriano and Santana.

I’m not the biggest MLB fan so I’m probably full of shit. But to me The Big Hurt looks like the MVP.

I say Howard is NL MVP.

I think sanatan is hte mvp...being a DH should affect the mvp voting....you do half the job of the other players...thomas has no chance at it...his average is too low..

jugdish said...

Good post. I'm partial to Jermaine Dye. I don't think having protection around him can be a knock against him for MVP voting. If that's the case you have to remove almost every candidate on that list, especially Jeter. Dye has been clutch all year at the plate and in the field, and has single handedly carried the Sox in some games.

NL MVP is Poo Holes in my book.

Isiah Thomas said...

its a no brainer in the NL, hands down Ryan Howard. But the NL as a whole is inconsequential. Whoever comes out of it will get rolled by the AL.

Isiah Thomas said...

if you discount the DH bc they only hit, then you have to discount pitching.

Santana isn't having a special enough year to get the Cy and MVP.

Isiah Thomas said...

re: protection

look at OAK's lineup and their stats, other than Swisher no one is having any type of good year.

jugdish said...

I agree with the pitching vs DH comment. Santana is not the only bright spot on that team.

As far as Howard vs Poo-Holes...I don't think its that much of a no brainer. If you look at just stats maybe, but I think that the Cards don't make the playoffs with out Poo-Holes. The Phillies aren't going to make the playoffs either way.

anonymous said...

and as a side note, theyre saying Liriano is done for the year.

jugdish said...

That's good for any team in the AL Central.

thejaywhite said...

I disagree on pitching..its more important..pitchers go 230+ innings a year thats 690 at bats..

more than any hitter..

and i like hitters getting MVP as well but this is such a down year its just hard to select someone...I really just want anyone but jeter...manny would have been nice..but when the sox fell out he stopped trying...

travis hafner cooled off too..theres really no clear cut winner this year

jugdish said...

...except Minnesota...:)

jugdish said...

I couldn't argue against Howard getting it, I just think Albert means more to that team and they would be no where near the playoffs without him.

On a side note...I was at the game last year where he hit that monster home run off Brad Lidge in the NLCS. I have never heard the life sucked out of a stadium so fast. That place was so loud until he hit that, then you could hear a pin drop...unbelievable!

Eric said...

Here is the problem with Frank Thomas for MVP, less than two weeks (at the beginning of September) ago he was hitting .270 with 28hr and 78 RBIs, hardly MVP numbers. I guess you can say he is picking it up when it matters the most, but to me an MVP has to be the man all year long. He was just ok for 5 months then incredibly hot for 12 days.

temwr said...

ABJ is my motto. Anyone but Jeter.

Not that I dislike him, but come on, he might not even be the MVP on his own team.

Sometimes I think the MVP should be a blind vote and that all the voters can see are a players stats. Not the team they are on, not the team's record, not the name. Only stats.

But I suppose that would take some of the 'magic' out of it or something.

jugdish said...

I don't think that would work...you have to consider intangibles too...

El Padrino said...

Beltran, NL MVP (homer call)

wouldn't mind if Howard got it

AL is tough, I'd give it to one of the TWINS. I mean Detroit was up on them how many games? More than 10 I know and they are now what 2 behind (not checking, just estimating) Plus Mauer handles that staff and produces on the offense and Morneau is a hitting machine.

Isiah Thomas said...

Jeter for MVP is so overblown. People want to give it to him as more of a "lifetime achievement" type deal. Yes he has great #'s but look at that lineup. Give me a break.

I think we need to get the ABJ movement started.

Isiah Thomas said...

MVP should be voted by players only and not the media. Too often you get some jerkoff leaving a player off his ballot to make a statement.

Eric said...

i doubt beltran will have much of a chance against howard and poo holes

Isiah Thomas said...

the Twins need a collective ball dipping for potentially ruining Liriano's career.

El Padrino said...

really?

he's having a career year on a team that has the best record in baseball

jugdish said...

from ESPN's article on the MVP race...

• The RISP factor: Which player has gotten the bigger hits, Pujols or Howard? It isn't as clear-cut as Howard's RBI totals might make you think. Average with runners in scoring position: Pujols .389, Howard .248. Two outs, men in scoring position: Pujols .421, Howard .230. Two outs, runners anywhere on base: Pujols .359, Howard .227.

Poo-Holes is clutch!

temwr said...

My NL guy was Beltran, so I am on board with el padrino.

The AL guy is Dye. But still ABJ works for me.

El Padrino said...

the real debate is the al

no one could argue howard, pooholes or beltran really
all are derserving i would say

Isiah Thomas said...

Pooholes missed a big chunk of time and his team still stayed in 1st without him.

Howard is having a great season, if he hit 61 or more HR and takes and passes a public piss test I'd give him the MVP.

jugdish said...

The home run derby is not the MVP award. The Cards stayed in first, but the division closed the gap on them to less than 5 games at one point. You can't argue with Pujols' number in the clutch, plus he is a gold glove candidate and Howard has the most errors of all NL first baseman. Considering all that, its almost a no brainer.

temwr said...

Yes Beltran is awesome in the field too. It is a no-brainer.

jugdish said...

Beltran has had a great season, no doubt, but does Beltran mean as much to his team as Pujols does?

TaeKwonDee said...

remember that, right or wrong, many MVPs have a "defining moment" or "defining moments" late in the year. see vlad's rush to mvp after his final week for the ages in 2004. sure, he had a great year up to that point, but the final week put him over the egde. i say that the al is literally up for grabs with all the candidates mentioned here until the final week of the season. if thomas continues this tear for 2 1/2 more weeks he gets it. if the chi sox pull the WC out and dye goes 6-12 with 2 hrs and 6 RBI in the final minnesota series, then dye gets it. if Santana continues his lock down his last four starts of the season and shuts the chi sox down with an 8 inning gem with 10+ Ks to finalize the WC, then Santana gets it. i think voters have all the people mentioned here in mind, but will reserve judgement until one of those distinguishes himself in the next 20 days.

TaeKwonDee said...

also i agree with the post, an mvp is someone whose team would be absolutely devastated if they were unepectedly and suddenly removed from their team. the yankees would be just fine with mariah carey playing SS if jeter had torn his acl three months ago. so vote "no" on jeter.

temwr said...

taek hits the nail on the head I think. This is probably true in both leagues. If anyone goes on a tear for these last few weeks they can sew it up...assuming of course they were in contention to being with. If Jack Wilson ends the season 20-20 with 10HRs he isn't getting MVP.

As for Beltran I think you could make the argument that he means as much to his team as PooHoles does to his.

The Rev said...

In the AL... I'm fine with anyone winning the MVP except Jeter.

In the NL... I want Howard to win it. But I am biased.

TaeKwonDee said...

count me down with the ABJ movement. but isiah is right, for him it would be more of a "lifetime achievement"/"all around good guy who lucked out to play on a team for the ages, with decent offense, terrible defense, and made one wild looking throw to home plate to catch a runner who didn't slide in the playoffs" award.

and if you think the BBWA are going to let jeter get out of baseball without an mvp award, you're crazy. and this year is his best shot......

jugdish said...

I guess my arguement against Beltran is that the Mets have three players who have been mentioned as MVP candidates in Beltran, Wright, and Delgado. The Cards don't have any other players close to being mentioned as an MVP candidate, so Pujols has less protection in the line up and has to step up and do more...and he does.

Haven't we given up the Jeter is a bad defensive player argument yet. He's unspectular at worst, he makes every play he is supposed to make, he has like 11 errors, thats pretty solid. Theres no way someone can say hes terrible. PS he has at least 2 gold gloves.

And it is fairly clear to me that if you are a team and you know you are going to start the season in the presason top 10 then you should play as many cup cakes as you can. If you start outside the top 10 then you gotta beat someone.

seriously, why is this guy on our jock?

Martin VanNostrand said...

Word El P. At the rare office party function they have bud and bud lite. I don't even take the lite then. If it's that ghetto just give me bud.

My BOC is Sam Adams. The Boston Lager. I've had some of their other brews but like the OG best.

Bryan...

I reread. Your quote was...

"But, if some ass is going to Jr. High out and follow me around all day, then I'm going to do the same"

The point was, you compared whoever it was to a JR High kid, and you then did the same actions as the person who you put on the JR High level.

A lot of people say "it's on". That's a common term that we all understand. But who says "Jr High out" anyway?

Really, has anyone ever heard that term used anywhere? Am I too old and not hip with the kids? Am I not drinking enough cheap beer and smoking enough weed in my life?

You're making it easy Bryan. Maybe you need to take a few plays off, kid.

EP - what's a good, cheap, watered down light beer that good to pound? Bud light fits that description for me, but I'll take suggestions.

temwr said...

Miller Lite is my cheap beer of choice. It gets the job done.

If I am actually going for taste I go for Stella.

This brings back memories of that teacher's blog where they are talking about pitching staffs and beers...what happened to those guys? corey and carson or something like that...

I don't get how a beer drinker counts calories....

temwr said...

Drinking lite beer for the calorie savings ranks right up there with ordering a double whopper value meal and getting a diet coke.

Dikembe Meiztombo said...

Miller Lite, Blue Moon.

Isiah Thomas said...

thats along the lines of Wendy's offering those deli sandwiches...wtf.

In a lot of cases, that is what is called "common sense".

Try it sometime.

OK, I'm done with you now. You bore me. I rinse you from my balls!

Isiah Thomas said...

you know when it takes you a good 3 or 4 rolls of the mouse wheel to get to the bottom of a Rev post that he is indeed fired up.

You're right Zeke. How could I be so short sighted.

The Rev said...

Now those were the days.

Zeke is a dick! Good times!

temwr said...

Blue Moon isn't bad, apparently an orange is required to drink it though.

Isiah Thomas said...

an orange?

I'll throw a lime in a corona but orange?

Martin VanNostrand said...

LOUD NOISES!!!

The Rev said...

I thought lemon went with Blue Moon.

Spaceman Spiff said...

nah its an orange

jugdish said...

I prefer Miller Light or Zeigenbock. Killians is good too.

Not that I subscribe to the theory, but I've heard it said that if you have to put a lime in your beer...you need a new beer?

Now an orange? No..sorry, that's like Pineapple on a pizza. If you have an orange in your beer, you might as well have one of those little fruity umbrellas too.

Isiah Thomas said...

bears can smell the menstration

Spaceman Spiff said...

i drink el pacifico

The Rev said...

I had one with lemon before. Maybe the bartender fucked up.

It was good though.

jugdish said...

...and don't forget to lift your pinky when you drink it.

anonymous said...

blue moon with the orange is solid.

whoever mentioned that Pitching = Beer thing.. that WAS pretty funny.

newcastle is solid too.

theres a brew in MI called Oberon (sp?).. i dont know if its elsewhere as well. theyre like a mini sam adams with regards to having "seasonal beers".

pretty tasty.

Isiah Thomas said...

dude Corona is a good beer, even better with a lime....

The Rev said...

I would like to extend to you an invitation to the pants party!

Dikembe Meiztombo said...

NO orange in the Blue Moon.

El Padrino said...

nothing wrong with a lime in a ice cold corona

especially after a shot of tequilla or rum

The Rev said...

Dos Equis is better than Corona. Any Mexican guy will tell you that.

Isiah Thomas said...

I'll take Anchor Steam if I want to go beer snob. Or Negro Modelo.

Dikembe Meiztombo said...

You lose the blueish flavor with the orange. tell me you know what I mean.

Spaceman Spiff said...

anyone drink the loast coast brewery beers, such as downtown brown, its tasty and the name is filthy

jugdish said...

They don't even sell Corona in Mexico do they? Not the places I have been anyways.

Spaceman Spiff said...

definitely rev, id rather drink dos equis, el pacifico, or even tecate before corona

The Rev said...

I was going to drink some wine tonight, but now I'm in the mood for a beer.

El Padrino said...

i drink corona all summer
then i switch it up in the fall
stella is great beer (tem mentioned i think)

peroni is delicious
el presidente i like
brooklyn lager excites me

Spaceman Spiff said...

michelob amber bock is smooth and san miguel dark

The Rev said...

Jugdish...

It's been 16 years since I was in Mexico, but they sold it in Cancun. Maybe they sell it in the tourist places.

That's where I fell in love with the Dos Equis though. They sold it at the bullfight I went to. There, they sold more Dos Equis than Corona.

Yes, I've been to a bullfight in my life.

El Padrino said...

JW Dundee Honey Brown Lager is one of my favs. Michelob makes one too.

jugdish said...

I've only been to the tourist places. Not Can Cun, but Cozumel twice, Nogales, and one other place I can't remember the name of. I found a lot of Sol down there though.

Martin VanNostrand said...

We had some harsh red wine a week ago. A gift from helping somebody move. My wife didn't really care for it. I her told to break a cherry popsicle and put it in her glass as ice. Worked out nicely as she had two glasses after that.

Beth82678 said...

Wow, I miss most of a day of comments and I miss all the excitement. I was probably one of the first, if not THE first, to get on people's cases for whining about KC, but bryan you seriously need to calm down. When a girl thinks you're overemotional on an issue it's time to pull it back a little. It seems to me that most of the regulars here have long ago started ignorning KC, and the 1 or 2 that might not have just aren't funny, but not worth getting your panties in a wad over. You want it to stop then just ignore it - any 12 year old getting picked on on the bus knows that.

As for beers, someone mentioned Michelob Ultra earlier and that surprised me - I thought that was purely a "chick beer", unless it's the amber of course which is just a very good beer. But then again, I thought drinking a Blue Moon WITH the orange was only for non-drinkers or gay men so what do I know? :-)

The Rev said...

Out of respect to Martin's wife, I won't make a "broken cherry" joke.

Dikembe Meiztombo said...

Word Beth, word.

The Rev said...

Know how I know you're gay?

You drink Blue Moon with an orange in it.

I tried one of those Michelob Honey joints. It wasn't bad. Only had one though so I can't make a good ruling.

Anyone been to Chicago and tried Old Style? Tasted like Bud to me. That's why the Cubs never do anything.
