Weekend Recap

Weekend Recap:

Biggest Story : Tiger wins his 52nd title at the Bridgestone Invitational. He beat Stewart Cink on the 4th playoff hole. Again, he pulled an Obi-Wan and mind fucked Cink into submission. The guy has won 4 straight and is now tied for 5th all time in career wins. Let’s see if he can rally a suspect US team at the upcoming Ryder Cup. That’s really the only place he’s somewhat unproven.

MLB : Tight like an 8 yr old. (joke)
The NL Wild Card race is heating up down the stretch with 8 teams with-in 5 games of the surprising Reds. The Yanks continue to roll and have a healthy lead over the Sawx, well Sux at this point. The Tigers continue to impress and have a 5 game lead in the AL Central. Philly pulled off a minor trade for Jeff Conine and they are one of the teams in WC contention only 1 game back. Could Conine push them over the top?

NFL : Preseason continues. The Skins are looking overrated (shedding tear), while the Pats look ready for another Title run. Reggie Fumbles, while Leinart and Cutler continue to impress. VY – well, good luck Tenn. With the 1st overall pick next year. TO receives his first public fine and reports are that he’s “faking” his hammy injury. This situation is about to combust. Whoever had Week 1 in the “TO will sabotage the Cowboys Season” might be a winner. More headlines about the Panthers players who received steroids are surfacing. I’m surprised this story hasn’t become a huge media storm, as I believe the Doctor who supplied the roids has already been convicted. Keep this on your radar. MNF tonight : Bengals vs Packers, Palmer is supposed to return, good chance for potential fantasy owners to get a look at him. Over/Under on Favre picks : 2.

Racing : Marco Andretti, all of 19 yrs old, wins in Sonoma thanks to great gas mileage and some lucky caution laps at the end. Looks like he’s over his last lap failure/heartbreak from the Indy 500. There’s only once race left for the IRL guys and check it out, if Franchiti is in contention the endless cut-a-ways to his wife, Ashley Judd, are worth it. NASCAR : Big win for Matt Kenseth at Bristol. The night race there is always special. Mark Martin and Tony Stewart struggle while Jr, Kyle Busch, Hamlin, Gordon, Burton and Jimmy Johnson all get top 10’s to help their Chase cause. Only 138 pts separate 4th through 11th with 2 races left till the Chase.

Andre Agassi returns to the US Open for the final tourney of his career. Will he have some Jimmy Connors type luck or will the run end quickly?

College Football returns this week and we def. need an indepth preview post.

Pop:
Emmy’s – The Emmy’s were last night. Was forced to watch some red carpet stuff with the GF and caught a few awards. Honestly, another show devoted to giving Hollywood BJ’s is not high on my list of things to watch. Anyone with lucid comments here is welcome to add details.

For those interested Invincible led the box office with $17.0 Mil, Talladega Nights took second with $8.0 M, and Beerfest debuted in 4th with $6.5 M in sales. SOP fell to 6th with $6.4 M.

The season finale of Entourage was pretty solid. It’ll be interesting to see where it goes next season. No way they can get rid of Ari.

Who else is in the FFL? Last I checked we had 7 teams signed up, lets get that filled today so we can get a draft order then start the draft this week. Don’t be scurrred to sign up.

And don’t forget to comment on anything I missed.

I'm stunned that people are actually looking at the Phillies as contenders now.

Stunned, I tell you.

Forgot to mention I am a graduate of THE College of William and Mary.

Home to non-other than NFL legend Steve Christie (K-Buf) and current star Darren Sharper (S-Min).

That was a damn good recap.

temwr said...

That Abreu trade is Simmons' Ewing theory in action.

Or else it is just because the NL sucks.

The Rev said...

Temwr87...

Definite Ewing Theory potential there. Though I would argue that Abreu is helping the Yankees tremendously as well. But yes, the Phillies got better after he left. And I'm an Abreu fan saying that.

Also... yes, I'm sure it has something to do with the NL sucking. Thank goodness you only have to play fellow NL teams in the playoffs to get to the World Series. If the Phillies made it, and had to face teams like the Yankees and Red Sox in the first round, it would be a three game sweep right out of the box.

Isiah Thomas said...

it's nice to see there are some NASCAR and soccer fans up in here....

temwr said...

Does the fact that Abreau is doing well for the Yankees negate any Ewing Theory potential? Or is it solely based on what the Phillies do?

Isiah Thomas said...

I think its solely based on what the Phillies do, so the theory is in full effect...

Forgot to mention Team USA's dismantaling of Australia Saturday night. They are cruising. They are in the "easier" side of the bracket so it should be smooth sailing until the finals where they will presumably face Spain or Argentina.

Isiah Thomas said...

is solely one of those words primarily used with based?

Don't see it used too much without it.

temwr said...

Responsible. It (solely) is used with responsible a lot too.

I'm gonna cut the league down to 12. Only 7 have joined so far. And I figure 5 more is easier than 9.

Futher Highlights from parts of the Emmy's I did watch:

1) The Return of Dick Clark : They unfroze him and had him behind a desk accepting some award. It was pretty sad to see him rumbling, bumbling, stumbling through his speech. Not sure if it was his idea or not. Obviously you can never use the words "minor" and "stroke" again in the same sentence.

2) Charlie's Angels tribute to Aaron Spelling. I seriously wanted to go run around in traffice after watching that. First the 3 chicks had that "we're really old and haggard but we're trying to cover it up with plastic surgery" look. Then there little speeches were so self absorbed. Just dreadful.

temwr said...

I am all signed up for the FFL.

I am not sure whether or not I can do the live draft, but if I can make it, I'll be there.

If not I'll rank some players and you all can draft for me.

i do not want the 1st pick, i just had a draft where i had it and its horrific, well for me it was

jugdish said...

The Yankees haven't been playing THAT great lately...the Red Sox have just been that BAD. As far as the Tigers go...they haven't been playing well at all. They still have a 5 game lead, but are 3-7 in their last 10 games. If a team can cling to a 5 game lead, then they are doing just that. The Tigers are 5-11 against the White Sox this year...not sure what their record is against the Twins. They better watch their back or they will get swallowed up by one of those two teams.

jeremy piven...emmy for entourage (ARI)

Abreu isnt good enough to be ewing theory

jugdish said...

Outside of the Mets, the NL is just horrible this year. I live in Houston so I see a lot of Astros baseball...along with a lot of the other NL teams that come through. The NL west and central divisions are up for grabs with all the contenders in those divisions hovering around .500. I think the entire NL central was swept by the AL central during interleague play.

I think the door is closing on the Cardinals' window of opportunity before they have to retool.

Its been a hell of a run for Atlanta!

The best part of the Emmy's was that one dudes acceptance speech. Where he listed the people that he did not want to thank:

"And finally god, I know you might have had a hand in this but you took my hair...not cool man...not cool"

steve,

other than that the NL is a dog's race, tiger is a beast, arod was 2-20 with 13 K's (i think) and Leinart looked great

Spaceman Spiff said...

zeke, dick clark returned after his stroke at the New Years Eve show. He hosted as usual, but also had co-host. Still he did much more talking there, imagine his little emmy's piece times 100. sad

I don't watch many sitcoms but I love me meat, er, reality tv...

I've never seen an episode of Lost, 24, ER, Scrubs, The Office, Earl, etc...

And I love myself for it.

JFreak said...

Grey's Anatomy should have won.

Stupid 24.

Martin VanNostrand said...

Scrubs, The Office and Earl are the few shows I watch other than Conan and random PBS programming if intresting.

I have only watched one entire episode of Survivor and maybe seen 15 minutes total of American Idol.

Yes I reside in a cave.

Dikembe Meiztombo said...

You NEED to be watching The Office. It's now required.

Beth82678 said...

Amen! The Office is the best show in years. I already have season 1 on DVD and can't wait for season 2 to come out in mid September.

The Rev said...

The Office is definitely quality programming.

Isiah Thomas said...

didn't the office almost get cancelled during its 1st season?

I've heard the English version is better...

oh and letterman, cuz he's the only guy that makes me laugh
besides katt williams of course

whocares said...

Zeke,

I hate being one of Those Guys, but I saw the English version first and thought it was hillarious. Coincidentally, my boss got me the two seasons on DVD of the English version.

The first couple of the US episodes were completely ripped off from the BBC version and I silently boycotted the US version for a while. But now I'm a fan of the US version as it stands on its own with good characters and new plotlines not ripped off from the BBC version.

I would HIGHLY encourage any Office fans to get the two seasons. It will take some getting used to, but it is definitely worth it.

Wow. Sorry for the rant. Didnt realize I was quite that big of a fan. And no, I dont work for the BBC...

temwr said...

I have never seen The Office, British or American. I don't even know what day it is on. If it is wednesdays I don't watch any TV that day because I am playing sand volleyball (indoor in the winter) and drinking lots of beer.

Side note for everyone...

I currently have two guest columns in my inbox from two of our readers.

I think both of them would be good for this week. I was going to use one on Wednesday. But if anyone wants me to use the other one this week, we can use both. Both are football related.

Anyone want to take a break this week? I do think a lot of people are taking vacation this week with the Labor Day Weekend coming up. Maybe this would be a good week to get in some guests.
