Just another manic Monday (woo-o-ooh)

Well, there's not a ton to report.. just a small recap of the weekend/last week, and we'll get one started for new comments.

-Tiger. Dominant. Dude just ran ovaaar people. Stomped em out. Then of course the instant overreaction is already in full swing, with the lead story on ESPN arguing that he is not only the greatest golfer ever (he will be by the end of his career at least), but the best individual athlete ever.

-Lefty. I think his right breast finished at -9 under, but he himself finished at -6 under, so he wasn't really in contention.

-Playoffs. The wild cards/division races are heating up. East coast bias tells me that the Red Sox got stomped out this past series.

-MNF. Our first look at Reggie Bush as a nation. Setting it off on Monday night. Bush, Kornheiser, no T.O. This is worth watching for the 1-2 series that Bush plays. I'm glad that we don't have to see TO come out tonight, although I'm sure the sideline cams will be in full effect. Hopefully he'll bring his bike to the sideline.

-August 22nd. Which leads me to the final warm up point for today.. Madden. Midnight sales, huge numbers.. people go insane over this game. They take their Maddenness very serious. (Cheapest price I saw was $37.99 at Circuit City). I'm not even a huge fan of the game (sorry), but even I'll be picking it up for that price.

-And who saw Snakes on a Plane?!

Haven't seen SOP, can't say its really on my list unless its too over the top.

I did see Talladega Nights, overall funny, nowhere near Anchorman though.

Tiger - the man is a BEAST. Seriously, he's the best golfer ever. Ever. Tough to say best athlete ever - I mean are you saying athlete as in freak of nature? Athlete as in able to mind fuck the competition into submission? Athlete as in dominating the sport? He's def in the discussion for best ever. Its almost like he goes Obi-One on people "You don't want to make that putt" - then doink, they miss the putt.

I've got Reggie in a Keeper League I just started (I know - no more personal fantasy stuff) I'm a Reggie guy, I lived in CA for his first 2 years and saw all his games on tv, the kid can play.

As for Yanks/Sawks...it's soooooo OLD. The Sucks are done. Stick a fork in them. People out west aren't enamored with it like they are in ESPN land.

Don't forget the NASCAR race, Jeff G gett-n-r done with a top 2 finish.

Looks like SOP did $15.3 million in sales, below their expectations.

Tiger is definitely in the argument for greatest athlete ever. In every sport the best players, while admittedly were the best, had peers, someone who competes with them. There isn't another golfer in the same stratosphere with Woods today, and there are barely any who approach him in the history of golf. No one dominates a mainstream sport the way he does. It awesome, I'm just glad I get to watch it in my lifetime.

People may call me crazy but I think you have to put Tony Hawk in the discussion for best individual athlete as well. I'm not even a huge fan but he dominated for 15+ years and you can't deny that. Much of that time though skateboarding could have been considered "underground" with a smaller field of competition and it might still not be mainstream but it's close.

Now let the mockery of me begin...or send me to the spice mines of Kessel.

The Tiger hype is getting crazy. Sure, he's only 30, but let's let him play for a few more years, before we annoint him the God of sports. (it gets annoying when we keep hearing "The Next Michael Jordan" tags for all basketball players).

I hope T.O. gets "Michael Irvined" on the turf in Philly.

whocares said...

What's really depressing is listening to all of the other golfers being interviewed before, during, and after the tournaments.

They're all scared shitless of him and it's kind of sad, really. Is there another sport where people concede defeat so openly and honestly? I mean, at least in football, basketball, etc. the worse team at least talks up their own virtues prior to the game. In golf, their all just crapping their pants at the sight of Tiger.

This is genuinely turning me off to the sport. Quit being such pussies for Christ sake!!

Martin VanNostrand said...

Team USA will be on at 6:30am tomorrow on ESPN2. I didn't see either game over the weekend but I like the team averages of 20 assists, 16 steals and 38 rebounds a game so far. Glad to see Sheridan pulled his journalistic foot out of their crotch and inch or two...oh wait, that's because they didn't play today.

temwr said...

Tiger is super dominate in his sport, but not even in the discussion when it comes to best athlete.

Let's pretend you are picking teams for a tournament where you play 10 events, heck make golf one of the events, do you pick Tiger in his prime over Bo Jackson in his prime? Tiger over Thorpe? Sure Tiger gets you a guaranteed win in golf, but hell he is getting a DFL (dead f$@#ing last for those who didn't know) in the other 9 events. Hell, I would take Beth over Tiger and I have only seen a headshot of her and read some running times.

anonymous said...

and for the record, can we get those running times converted to Canadian times for thejaywhite?

and seriously.. Cott cut off comments. just sayin.

I've been a "lurker" reading all the posts you guys put up, and thought I might add my two cents in the future.

I pretty much found you guys through SG -> KC -> reading comments on that page and finding it more entertaining than any of the aforementioned.

So, to all who contribute, my quick ass-kissing of excellent job; much oblige. Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself.

dh said...

I think the problem is that Tiger looks like he could snap any competitor he faces (excluding those with man-boobs).

Seriously, did you see how much freakin' bigger he was than Donald. Looked like he was playing with a 12 year-old.

And just him walking down between holes, I think it completely sikes everyone out.

On another note, did anybody read Bayless's article of how Jack had stiffer competition. Any opinions there?

Isiah Thomas said...

DH = the New Rev? JK Rev you'll always be #1 in my book.

DH, welcome and bring some heat with your posts. Throw some chap stick on those lips first.

I guess I'll be in the Tiger is the greatest athlete ever camp. The guy COMPLETELY mind fucks the competition. Sergio Garcia was talking about how Tiger gets away with stuff. He didn't say "I need to work on this...that". He was whining!

The man dominates his sport. I think he's the best ever.

And how can you not like watching him? Any golf with Tiger in contention becomes must watch TV. I don't watch golf if it doesn't have Tiger in it.

dh said...

Oh, and one more thing to isiah ... since you are the only one who mentioned Nascar (and I don't want to start a whole Nascar thread, but i'm curious as to what he and others might think), what did you think of Beaver throwing a tantrum when Junior spun him out in the Busch race. Just curious.

Eric said...

I think some people my be taking the term "best athlete" a little to literally. It isn't a question of overall athletic ability. How many guys have thrown over 100, or had a 45" vertical, or run a 4.2 and amounted to absolutely nothing in professional sports.

dh said...

I don't see how Sergio plays with a constant wedgy (my wife pointed this out during the British Open, so I can't take credit for that comment).

I mean seriously, did Tiger do that and also give him a swirly before he tee'd off? That would sike me out as well. He just needs to shut the trap and step up.

I'm with whocares ... stop slurping Tiger and get a bit pissed off that he is kicking your ass. I enjoy watching Tiger a ton, but I enjoy watching Tiger more when somebody is applying a bit of pressure, instead of 2 and 3 putting on every other hole.

Isiah Thomas said...

Beaver...I like that.

First off they need to get the Nextel Cup guys out of the Busch Series. Enough with sponsors and drivers being greedy. The top 10 in Busch points is a who's who of Cup drivers.

As for Jr. well he spun the guy no question. But shit happens. Beaver has been getting bitched out by a lot of guys - makes you think there is a lot of resentment towards him. He was dubbed the "driver of the future" just last season and so far this year the guy has pretty muched sucked ass.

Isiah Thomas said...

re: Team USA, I saw the PR game, they blew their doors off in the 2nd and 3rd Q then PR made a lame "comeback" in the 4th when the game was already over. They looked good.

Sheridan is a piece of shit who has some agenda. He can't give credit to Team USA and already has a boner waiting if they lose.

One more thing, Sergio Garcia really, really, REALLY needs to get at least a size or two bigger clothes. Really.

Eric said...

Jesper Parnevik is the real offender when it comes to the tight clothes department. That guy is ridiculous.

temwr said...

People should take "best athlete" literally. It means what it means. Let's not make new definitions for words. Athlete has a definition and Tiger is not even close to being the best athlete ever. If you want to argue about who is the most dominate at their craft phrase it that way. And yeah there are lots of people who can throw over 100 etc and haven't amounted to a hill of beans, but there are a lot who have and have amounted to something.

Next people will be saying that Al Michaels is the best actor ever because he is good at what he does and is on TV, so he must be an actor.

dh said...

I think Eric might have a good topic with the “best athlete” dilemma. We’ve all heard and probably been in on conversations that argue this. Some are probably sick of talking about it.

Where does one draw the line between skill and athletic? Is there a difference? I think basketball players are up there, but then again, just because you are quick and agile doesn’t necessarily mean you have hand-eye coordination. I mean, you guys saw Carl Lewis throwing out the first pitch, right? But who wouldn’t admit he was an athlete.

In my opinion, and not to be ambiguous, but I think it is just a personal preference. Some will say Tiger is the “best” athlete, because they relate to how well he plays golf. Others won’t be able to understand how you could call somebody who walks during their sport “athletic”.

Again, I think it is that line between what is the difference between skill and athletic.

Thoughts?

(BTW, you guys can't tell that work is slow right now, can you?)

the Dictionary.com definition of athlete is as follows"

"A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts."

I think comparing best athletes of different sports is somewhat difficult because of what each sport requires. You almost have to take each sport separatly. Since each one requires different abilities, talents, and strengths, I'd have to give the nod those athletes who play multiple sports.

(and for those of you playing the home game...I hope you noticed me giving credit to dictionary.com for that definiition and not claiming it as my own)

That pretty much sums up my thoughts.

Martin VanNostrand said...

Best all around athlete can only be settled by an olympic decathalon. Neither Dan nor Dave is eligible. First round matchup Tiger vs. Bode Miller.

dh said...

I think dictionary.com should change that to "naturally acquired traits" as opposed to "natural or acquired traits".

jugdish said...

I think Martin is on to something there. Maybe we should do some kind of bracket thing like ESPN always does with everything else. Although I don't think Bode would be in Tiger's bracket, he would be in John Rocker's bracket.

Beth82678 said...

My problem with the dictionary.com definition is that it doesn't take into account how people apply those skills. I've always said there are others with just as much pure skill as people like Michael Jordan, Tiger, etc. but it's their unbelievable drive and dedication (and just having "it") that makes them as special as they are. That mental part of it is just as important, if not more so, in my humble opinion.

And who qualifies as "athletes"? I know some people who say golfers, Nascar drivers, bowlers, etc. don't qualify. Yet I'm 100% convinced that the top ballet dancers are "athletes", even though they clearly aren't playing a sport.

The questions never end...

thejaywhite said...

Top drivers golfers or dancers may be athletes but its not the dancing, golfing or driving that makes them athletes.

temwr said...

thejaywhite left off

"it is their hearts that make them athletes and winners. And there is a lesson there, that if we just all work together and give it our best then we will all be champions....orgy at my place 8pm."

Cam said...

It's dumb to say that Tiger is the best Athlete ever. 50 year old guys with pot bellies play golf all the time. It doesn't take athleticism to golf.

jugdish said...

Of course the ESPN definition of athlete is probably limited to any individual who they have previously covered in a story, which would rule out dancing, or anything else like that...:)

Beth82678 said...

So if I understand you right Jay, it's more someone's inate abilities and skills that determine if they are an athlete or not. But if you look at things that way, then the best athlete in the world could in theory be someone no one has ever heard of, their athletic career derailed for various reasons.

Personally, I don't care how great your skills are, if you haven't proven yourself in some athletic sport or undertaking I don't think you should be considered.

dh said...

Okay, so who do you guys think is the best "athlete" who doesn't have "it" (good post Beth, I'm not being a smart ass by putting it in quotes, just referencing what you described)?

I'm going with Kevin Maas, just for the simple fact that I bought all of his baseball cards thinking I would make a fortune off of them. And yes, you can all laugh and point at me for this, because I deserve it.

Are we really gonna let Keith S off the hook with his Dale Earnhardt is the best athlete comment?

I'm a NASCAR fan but no way in hell would he even crack the top 100 athletes of all time. All time badass? Maybe.

temwr said...

If national writers can get away with saying Tiger Woods is the best athlete ever then I can't give anyone any shit for saying Earnhardt. I mean yeah, they are both assinine comments, but the media sets such a poor example I can't fault the poor fellow. It is a sad sad state of affairs.

jugdish said...

I wouldn't consider NASCAR drivers athletes. Its a competition, no doubt, but I don't see them as athletes.

jugdish said...

If Tiger was lugging around his own clubs for 18 holes a day, I'd be more inclined to say he is an athlete!

thejaywhite said...

I think the decathlon really does dictate who the best athlete is as it tests every skill an athlete needs over ten events.

Having said that not all the top athletes in the world chose to become decathletes and the system(decathlon) to find your top athlete is only as good as the information(athletes) put into the system.

I think michael jordan would be an outstanding decathlete and probably the best ever. Kobe would be phenomenal too so would Rodman. Rodman actually did track before and can run a 10.30 in the 100m.

Gretzky is the best hockey athlete ever. But Mario was probably a better hockey player, mostly because of size. Gretzky also did track as a kid and was a near sub 4minute mile guy.

thejaywhite said...

The guys who dominate their sports now would come out on top in the decathlon, except for guys who dominate just for sheer physical advantages like Shaq or Tiger.

Tiger is black and yellow so he is used to the son and it doesnt wear him down as much as the other competitors thats why hes always so good on the 4th day. Its just not fair.

Yes that was a joke - sort of. I hate tiger

temwr said...

AC Slater was the best athlete ever.

Keith S said...

Whoa Isiah. I can't stand nascar. In no way was that a serious comment. I only said his name because I forgot about Kobayashi.

Isiah Thomas said...

AC Slater was sweet but I really think Zach banged Jessie on the dl.

dh said...

I'm from the dirty south, and I have few general rules I live by. One of them being, don't talk about Earnhardt in any way that his fans might conceive as being derogatory. Especially if at Talladega in the infield. I did that once and count myself lucky to be alive today. Seriously.

I mean, you might as well draw a cartoon of Mohammad and post it on Al Jazeera.

Beth82678 said...

Jay, I have to call you out - Tiger dominates because of "sheer physical advantages"???? I know the black and yellow comment was a joke, that must be one too.

dh said...

Well, you guys know Screech said he was 8" on the Howerd Stern show, so I think he stole them all while Zach and AC were taking showers together.

whocares said...

This is an impossible debate. There is no way to deem someone the best "athlete" of all time. With so many different sports and skill sets, there is no way any one person could be the best at every one of them.

Tiger may be the best golfer but that doesnt make him the best long distance runner or three point shooter. There is simply no way to quantify this discussion.

Michael Jordan. Best Basketball player of all time, hands down. Baseball? Slightly above average (at best). So, does that mean that someone like Derrick Jeter is a better athlete than Jordan because he can hit and field better? Who knows, but I doubt it.

Although I do agree with the chick on here (whatever her name is) that is takes will and determination to become a top notch athlete, not just great skills.

If it was all about the skillz then I would be at the top of this list hands down. I can throw a Kettle over a pub.

Isiah Thomas said...

didn't Screech mean he was 8" after watching AC Slater and Zach in the shower?

Keith S said...

While I am not a fan of Tiger and don't consider him the best athlete ever, I don't think you can say he isn't an athlete just because he dominates a sport that "50 year old guys with pot bellies" play. It's clear that he has a strong workout regimen that keeps him in top shape. It must be all that fried chicken, collared greens, or whatever the hell he serves that keeps him trim.

thejaywhite said...

If jordan kept with baseball at age 19 on...he would of been as good as AROD, GRIFFEY or BONDS

Neither of the Earnhardts deserve any sort of credit. While they both were/are decent drivers, they are some of the dirtiest drivers in NASCAR. I can remember clearly Sr. at Richmond one year taking out Terry Labonte on the last lap coming out of turn 2. Stuck his bumber in Labonte's rear quarterpanel and destroyed his car. And what Junior did this weekend seemed rather blatant. People just don't run into each on the straightaway. I actually laughed when Edwards came out of the pits and rammed Dale. Too bad he didn't actually pin his hand.

Yeah it is very very very difficult to play golf. And Tiger is probably the most dominating individual athlete of all time, but the best?? Please, make a competition of any 10 individual events, and make golf one of them, and tell me that Tiger doesn't get DFL in every one but golf. Well, if getting a smokin hot wife was an event he'd finish second...to Martina...nah, she'd get third. Pete's wife is hot.
